Control 2019: Dr. Saba's still freaking about about the tremors in the Foundation even after they've stopped once I cleansed the Nail. Emily's response doesn't change either, meaning the tremors still haven't stopped for that voiceline.
Cookie Cutter: The "Body Regenerations" number on the load save menu is how many times you used the respawn feature.
Reloading from the Escape menu's Load button needs you to hold down Confirm like you are when trying to overwrite a slot with a new save, but it's missing the Hold indicator. Bad untested design. Okay game though.
No Fair Cheating or something else Save Scumming: Interacting with Poppah's toilet and picking an option, which gets a Slimy Skin if you go for it, and locks you out of the choice if you don't go for it, can't be redone even if you reload for from the Escape Menu... But, if you quit and reload, it's truly undone? Seems like they took a shortcut when doing the reload one save feature? I guess it doesn't clear "level memory" or something but does reset stats like Bits. Yeah. The floating bits drop thing on the way to the toilet didn't respawn on in-game reload. And Component Loadout isn't reset if you respawn vs. reload the save.
Accidentally overwrote my save, but if you restore from an older save but only replace the main save file and not the level saves, some map progress and plot progress is restored or something.
And it doesn't save the right descriptions for the Void Enhancer levels. My LV 1 has the description of LV 2, my LV 2 is LV 4, I assume, in the shop menu... and it basically fixes itself after upgrading.
And no? LV 4 doesn't exist. But there's this description...

Death by lag can happen to me, on my Linux computer, in the last minute of Hardcore (Level 10), while wielding: Metorite Rain, Grenade Launcher, Fire Beam, Lava, Nuggets of Darkness, Specters, Dark Side, and the Extra Nuggets upgrade. But at least enemies do stop spawning eventually once the boss appears, so survive long enough and it'll be just you and the boss.
Some achievements / upgrades are very high Double Unlock level-locked because they need enough of an ability to form a set, like I can't get Biting Frost due to lacking 3 Ice Abilities even as fighting Level 10 and got "Trash Throwing" as my latest ability unlock from metaprogression EXP. Unless the upgrades are random? Probably not?

“I wasn’t worried,” Fluttershy said quietly.
“Shoot, it would be nice if you let us know that you were headed off, Dash,” AJ said, giving her a quick noogie while Pinkie held Dash captive. AJ would pay for that, later.
“She told me,” Fluttershy said.
“Yeah,” Spike said. “Twilight was crazy worried when we realized you weren’t in the hotel. Plus you missed breakfast.”
“If everyone would have just listened…” Fluttershy mumbled.
“I hope you don’t plan on making a habit of this ‘sneaking off’,” Twilight said, but her smile made it sound a lot less stern than it could have.
Fluttershy just sighed.
Instead of her usual manic energy, Pinkie wore a soft, gentle smile. “Hey, hey, it’s okay. We’re going to be okay, Twilight. Spike and Dashie are going to be okay.”
“You don’t know that,” Twilight retorted softly.
Dresden sighed. “Pinkie, do you think you could check up on Applejack?”
“Oh, I absolutely could,” Pinkie said, as she stood for several seconds without any movement to leave.
Eventually Dresden caved. “Would you go check on Applejack? I want to talk to Twilight for a moment.”

Single Letter Difference Wordplay: or single character in Japanese and Chinese and such.

Alucard and Alucart weaponry.
One Step From Eden: Also Fun with Homophones, "sleight" and "slight" are pronounced the same. The former means a dexterous trick, while the latter is for "small".
- Doublelift — A sleight advantage
- Final Fantasy VII: You may notice that Cloud's name is even odder than those of the rest of the cast, having two fantastical names, when the rest of the heroes have normal surnames. This is because Cloud's peculiar surname, Strife, was intended as a slight modification/pun on the common Germanic surname "Strauss" - 「ストライフ」 "Sutoraifu" rather than 「ストラウス」 "Sutorausu" (note that the name of Cloud's mother was given as 'Claudia Strauss' in the Remake artbook). To Japanese ears, it sounds like just a slight tweak on a well-known Germanic surname. In English, it sounds like an implausible and Narmfully on-the-nose name.
Also sometimes Incidental Multilingual Wordplay, but let's have this trope idea avoid rhymes, like here. Maybe actually avoid homophones too? Visual https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parechesis

- Woody Woodpecker: In one of the shorts, a man finds a genie lamp next to a river and asks for the genie to give him a boat to cross the water, but the genie mishears him and instead gives him a goat, prompting him to say "I said boat, not goat!" In the Brazilian dub, the wordplay works just as perfectly, with the man asking for a "bote" (boat) and the genie giving him a "bode" (goat).
Can reach Sequence Break to new Zip Mode checkpoints early, but Ability Required to Proceed still needed to progress further along the path.
The key point is that there's a difference between a distance-based barrier vs. a lock and key based barrier.
- Control (2019) The Cave Bridge in Foundation can be reached when in the room via sufficient Launch objects and Levitate, but still needs Fracture if you got there with Create only.
- ENDER MAGNOLIA: Bloom in the Mist: Can use the gravity lowering along with all the Guide Dang It!-s to get to new Respites, but still need powers to break down barriers to get to new bosses.
And then there's how damage isn't an obstacle with sufficient recovery abilties effects like ENDER LILIES: Quietus of the Knights, where the recovery challenges are intended, Metroid, or Castlevania: Circle of the Moon. Can probably use invincibility, Double Jump knife platforms to reduce knockback, and Regenerating Health to get past the flame barriers that Cirno's Ice Magatama is supposed to be for, to get Dash Spike.

- Heroes in Crisis: As Linkara has discussed in depth, while the story tries to have a message about how important it is that people with mental health problems get help and that they need support and communication, it completely falls flat. Most of the "confessional" scenes are either padding, Played for Laughs even when discussing serious topics like drug addiction, or even emphasize Fanservice, like when Batgirl's costume is hugging every contour of her body as she shows off her bullet wounds from when the Joker shot her. With the reveal that Wally West was the one who murdered everyone after experiencing a mental breakdown, it also does more to perpetuate the stereotype that mentally ill people are dangerous and need to be locked away before they hurt people. Not much better is that, based on the solicitations and obvious rewrites, it seems likely the original reveal would've been that the AI running Sanctuary was the one to start killing people.

- Vehicle: Space Pirate Orbital Drop Pod
Atmosphere-to-earth troop deployment transport.
Efficiency is central to Space Pirate design philosophy, and these cramped soldier deployment modules are the ultimate example of this. Space Pirates long ago noticed that invading a grounded location from the upper atmosphere often involved both troop deployment and orbital bombardment, and it didn't take long for a science team to ask "why can't we do both at the same time?"
Consequently, these cramped compartments feature barely enough room for four Pirate troopers, the cheapest, smallest internal inertial damper available, and a ration bonus to any squad whose gunner ensures they hit something on the way down. That way, if a malfunction or error causes the troops to not survive the landing, it's still considered ammunition well spent.
[...]
"It functionally does! That's the whole conceit of the Federation, Adam! Space Pirates grow between six and fifteen feet tall and shoot lasers from their hands! The Ing could possess basically anything, living or otherwise, and turn it into a supercharged puppet! Kraid was a fucking mega space dinosaur that shot constantly-regenerating bone spikes bigger than I am out of his goddamn nipples! Humanity is basically the only species in the galaxy that can't slap a starship in half and that's their whole thing. Their identity. Their culture. They're the plucky underdogs that are so much weaker than everyone else it's always self-defense to do anything, no matter how messed up. It's not like the galaxy isn't dangerous and humans don't need protecting, but they're obsessed with it in a bad way. I'm sure some people on the squad heard of the one-woman army Samus Aran and went 'that's so cool, what a champion of humanity,' but when they actually met me? They saw someone from a planet they've never heard of, who spoke a language they didn't know, and who could crush their skull like a grape and they went 'yep, I've seen this song and dance before.'"

"There's a zoo around here!" Mina exclaimed. "We really should come back here some time, Soma! It could be really fun!"
Soma shook his head. "Right. Until we get cursed and break up!"
Arikado jerked to attention. "Wait—are you two officially a couple now?"
"No!" both Soma and Mina shouted.
[...]
"Where have you been, you jerk?" Yoko seethed. "Or, how are you even here? I thought your plane was going to be another couple of hours!"
Hammer scratched the top of his head. "I…err…got the time zones wrong."
Deep breaths kept both legendary vampire hunters from whacking Hammer upside the head. This wasn't the fight they needed to have right now. Everyone was on the ground. They could go to Soma's aid. That was the important thing. They could chastise Hammer's inability to adjust to life outside of his chunk of the world later.
[...]
Most magicians blessed with devil's magic used such power to make thorny walls, raise the dead, crush and burn. Not just to create idle shields.
[...]
"Don't be so cocky," Arikado scolded Soma. "That only tempts fate."
"What's the difference between being cocky and being confident?" Soma teased back. "Besides, as long as your barrier holds, nothing can—"
Belching green fire cut Soma's courage short.
[...]
The white-haired kid frowned. Was this guy seriously expecting Dracula to pop out and say hello? If so, he could use that for his advantage. Soma lowered his voice, then growled. "And you think you will have it, using these tricks on me? You insult me."
"What a clever ruse!" The sorcerer extended his fingers. "Let's try this again."
[...]
The kid was getting quicker. Arikado would have been impressed, if that didn't mean he had to think of another way to deflect the question. "When you've had these sorts of spells thrown at you your entire life, you gain some resistance to them."
It was the truth. Just a very abridged one. One that didn't mention constant assaults from succubi and incubi.
[...]
"Great." Like a balloon tied to a child's hand. Soma's face flushed. That was completely the wrong word to use to talk about a girl. Mina would have hit him if he knew his thoughts about her predicament.
[...]
There was a strange sensation that flooded Soma every time he took a new soul. Each creature had their own life, their own experiences and auras. Some filled him with snug warmth. Others, with rage and anger. Undead creatures felt universally cold, numbing. With each that he took, his old senses would start to awaken. It was a difficult balancing act, trying to get enough strength to fight without going into a critical overload and becoming Dracula.
He had enough self-control. He could handle such a tricky power.
"Feeling better?" Arikado asked.
The young man nodded. "Between all these skeleton guys, the zombies, and that ghost? I feel like a walking army!" He snapped his fingers, smirking as a new spirit manifested behind his head. "Really digging the ghost, by the way. And that beam-shooting skeleton? Good job on—"
The rest of his words were smothered into Arikado's chest. The young man yelped as the agent yanked both Mina and him beneath his body. Fire and metal crashed over their heads. There were two smacks, then a whining alarm. Soma winced. Was that a police car?
[...]
The eye surged electricity from its body into the phone. Maruki chuckled as Beth let the eyeball spew its visions. The monster certainly hadn't been built to have such a connection, but it was funny how magical creatures could adapt to technology. Gremlins didn't pop out of the air. They were always there—they just never had a way to manifest. Any creature that wanted to survive had to adapt to the modern era. With violent humans encroaching on new territory, rapid transformation of abilities was the only way to fight back.
[...]
It was almost like a holiday for him. Christmas, Valentine's Day, White Day, Cult Harassment Day.

"I hadn't thought about that!" Hammer pulled his knees under his arms. He flipped onto his back, grunting as he went through a sit-up regimen. "Hey, yeah! And holy water! Or maybe those bumper stickers like they've got in Hell, Michigan!"
The preposterous name got Arikado's attention. "What? You can't be serious."
Hammer shook his head. "Nope. Totally exists."
Arikado sighed. He shot Yoko a glance. "And you wonder why I don't want to visit the United States."
"The coasts are nice," Yoko yawned, then stretched. "What are we thinking, team? Are we going to play their little game or not?"

The faerie twisted one leg behind her other ankle. She blushed, then blipped out of sight. Richter scrunched his eyebrows together. Where did the odd familiar go? And why did it look like a diminutive Maria? Richter scrubbed his scalp. That couldn't be intentional, could it? Blonde, waifish fairies were probably a dime a dozen. Still, the doubt of its coincidental features crossed his mind.
[...]
Interesting choice of words. Maestro Phillippe sighed. So many ladies fancied themselves lovers of creatures like this half-vampire. The dark, brooding monsters of the night. Society had hardly embraced printing presses, and already, there were so many cheap newspaper stories and novels about women being wooed by such bizarre, fantastic creatures. Of beauty taming beasts, as it were. A mysterious plague, if he ever saw one.
[...]
The faerie scrunched up her face. "Sorry. I can't proceed ahead without my master's consent. Terms of a familiar's pact."
"Ugh. This is why I never mastered the works of magic," Richter grimaced. "It seems too much like legal proceedings."
Alucard lowered his head to the impish creature. "You may grant his requests, if you find them reasonable. Richter's judgment is sound, in most circumstances."
"I suppose I never will live down that whole 'being enthralled by a necromancer' incident," Richter groaned.
[...]"Illusionary magic uses impossible space, lighting, and deceptive sensory tricks to create stunning arts," the faerie explained. "In advanced cases, inorganic material can be replicated indefinitely to make spaces that can—"
"You don't know how much is real. Got it," Richter cut her off.
[...]
Richter gave a low whistle. "That I would have to teach you how to court a woman and take a joke. Steep tasks."
"Court?" Alucard turned to him, eyebrows furrowed. "You presume too much."
Such protests only made Richter laugh. "Only seconds ago, you conceded to my superior knowledge on romance and women. And now you think I jest?" He poked Alucard in the chest. "Say what you like about the condition of your heart, but I know where it lies—both as a vampire hunter and a fellow man."
When Alucard gave no retort, Richter knew he had earned another victory for the Belmont clan over Dracula's brood.
[...]
Richter tipped his head. What a nosy little bird. Her head was peeked out of her cage. Of all the things for the ringleader to keep, a peahen seemed the least likely. They lack the garish plumage of their male counterparts. About the only thing an entertainer would use them for was to make more peacocks. He gave it a light pat, then continued forward, eyes fixed on Maria's limp body.
[...]
Thick fingers caught Richter's wrist. The vampire slayer snarled. He shoved the round little man into stone floors. The ringleader laughed, as if it were a part of a clown's act. Holding the knife away from his neck, he sneered at Richter's homicidal rage. "Go ahead! Slay me, and this world falls apart. Only my magic keeps it together. We'll all be lost to the void—you, me, that damned dhampir, and your precious little lady."
[...]
"Go ahead," Maestro Phillippe ordered. "You know what to do."
Alucard nodded. "Now that I know why I do it."
The ringleader snarled at him. "What did you think this was for? My health? I am not so selfish."
[...]
The magician pressed down on the device's trigger. He jammed it into the side of Alucard's neck. Both Richter and Maria cringed. That was hardly the manner any decent doctor would have gone about doing such a task. He drew back on the device's handle, a hemorrhage flowing into its glass container. An empathetic pang made Maria shiver. Alucard's blood was dark, red, as human in appearance as her own. And his face—
[...]
"Just a few minutes," Maestro Phillippe replied. "Its liver needs time to catch toxins from the vampire's blood. Once the more unsavory, corrosive portions are removed, a blend of the two regenerative blood types will be formed. Mixes like oil and water, though. The solution hardly remains for over half an hour."
Richter crossed his legs, leaning forward. "There's really no other way to do this?"
That brought a wicked smile from the ringleader's mouth. "Unicorns only heal others by taking disease into themselves. Something as toxic as that plague would kill it outright. Doesn't even do enough healing to make its death worthwhile. It may experience some gruesome side effects from filtering vampire blood, but at least it gets to live that way."
Given what happened to the last unicorn, no one else in the room found that as a truly ethical alternative.
"I suppose we don't even want to know how you came across such a solution," Richter huffed.
"Happened to find it in a discounted necromancy tome, of all things." Maestro Phillippe shook his head. "It didn't have the precise measurements for an effective concoction, nor warnings about its poor solubility, but with some experimentation, I found the right recipe."
Maria rolled her head to the right. "How…how many did you experiment on?"
"Two unicorns and seven vampires before I got it correct." He threw a meaty arm around Alucard, bursting his personal bubble in such a grand violation that Richter and Maria tensed. "A vampire cannot tolerate the same loss of blood that a human can. Fresh blood degrades in their veins too quickly, but their organs require the same amount of oxygen a human needs. That's why they're so greedy for the stuff. Their bodies can't make enough good blood to sustain themselves, so they have to get it where they can!"
[...]
The ringleader slid off the workbench, then began fussing with the unicorn once more. Alucard stared at the leftover blood from the creature on the table. That was to be his to dispose of—to consume. Cooling, coagulating unicorn's blood, an odd shade of blue. A substance so sickeningly sweet that it made the back of his mouth scrunch up and gag. He glanced away, finding Maria's emotions mirroring his own. How much worse this had to be for her. Humans hardly ever consumed any blood, save for the odd pudding recipe. This was going to be a putrid experience—even if it gave her life back to her.
[...]
She wrapped the bandage roll around her legs. Even as she dressed the wounds, flesh was growing back on her thighs. Pale as Alucard's skin at first, then bright pink as healthy blood pulsed through it. Damned sharp magic. No wonder Maestro Phillippe put such faith into it. It certainly wasn't a cheerful attitude and a placebo saving her.
Half of the glass container remained by the time she was done mending her injuries. "Do you want to—"
"You'd better finish it off, my dear," Maestro Phillippe ordered.
Maria balked.
Alucard grimaced. So, she needed encouragement. He reached for the cooling surplus meant for his meal, then raised the glass' end to Maria. The lady shrunk down. A toast, was it? She lifted her glass, then repeated his actions. Fine. She could drink milk. She could eat eggs and honey. She could do this.
She threw back the glass and almost vomited.
The taste alone was enough to make her eyes bead up with tears. A tartness that ran bitter, metallic undertones clinging to her taste buds. The texture was slick, slimy, sinking too smoothly over her tongue and teeth. Colder than tea, warmer than beer. Her tongue clicked the roof of her mouth, and she about lost it again. If she could take it all in one chug, then she'd be stronger than any man that ever sat at any bar.
When she had downed the last of it, she grabbed another wad of bandages and cleaned out her mouth.
"Are you alright?" Richter asked.
She nodded, but couldn't speak. Her brother-in-law rubbed her shoulders. Outside of watching zombies tear a living man to pieces and childbirth, that had to be one of the most repulsive acts Richter had ever seen. He didn't know what fortitude that girl had inside her, but he knew he never wanted to challenge it. Taking another hunk of bandages, he cleaned her chin.
[...]
Alucard reached forward, then wrapped her within his cloak. Maria's heart missed a few pumps. His left arm tucked around her waist, his chin resting on her forehead. She went numb from shock. Alucard was no cuddler. What was he doing? Her skin prickled, confused. She felt like time itself had stopped.
She saw Richter's stopwatch in Alucard's right hand and knew that it had.
Alucard was quick to their defense. He raised his hand, then growled a phrase in a dark, ancient language. Pale light popped from the bodies of the sentries. They jittered, then collapsed through the portal. The white orbs sank into Alucard's body. He shook off the cold, tingling sensation as Maria took over portal flipping once more.
"Do you mind not doing the soul stealing spell next to us?" Richter grumbled.
"I didn't think it would be wise to cut them open and risk another infection," Alucard replied.
Maria shook her head. "Come on! We've got other things to worry about right now!"
[...]
"It was no sin, Master." The faerie beamed, then cooed. "Well met, Lady Maria! Glad to see you safe and sound. My master was worried sick about you. Why he even moaned your name in his sleep! I was surprised that he didn't awaken Sir Richter, but the way he snores—"
Alucard cut the faerie off before she could finish embarrassing all three of them. "Could you assist Maria in finding the fastest path exiting this realm?"
"Of course!" the familiar nodded.
[...]
The mirrored hallway had snared them once more. Maria jolted, glancing about in shock. All manners of monsters were around her, greeting her with ravenous eyes. She caught the familiar illusion that had trapped her before. The perverse portrayal of her sister waved at her. It batted its eyes, then leaned forward, licking the surface closest to Alucard.
Maria wound up a fist, then cracked the mirror, shattering the illusion standing beyond it.
"Was that truly worth seven years of bad luck?" Richter asked.
Shrugging, Maria pulled away from the walls. "I'm not superstitious."
Richter shook his head. "How can you not be? Have you not taken any consideration into what you have fought in your lifetime?"
"Riveting debate," Alucard sighed. "Perhaps we can continue this after we escape."
[...]
Maria split from their unified attack. She whistled, an icy dragon responding to her call. It rushed through the remaining slop, freezing it in place. The flashy distraction gave Alucard enough time to work up another spell. Richter ducked as white spirits shot over the group's head. All four spiraled together, then struck as one. They slammed into Maestro Phillippe's staff. The ringleader yowled as the orb from the top exploded in blue fragments.
Richter snorted. "Show-off."
[...]Powerful legs leapt towards the monastery's thick doors. Maria prepared to bolt but found her hand still in Alucard's. She smirked, then straightened her back. So it was pouring buckets. The rain wasn't going to harm her. She squeezed Alucard's hand. He responded in kind, eyes glowing in the rising storm, silver hair running down with the coursing rain.
She wondered for a moment what would happen if she knocked him onto the muddy ground, leapt on him, pushed that hair out of his face, and—
"Are you ready?" Alucard asked.

Interesting legal thing. Disproportionate Retribution:
- Shown Their Work: In Chapter 29, when addressing Mineta's antics towards the women of the series, Shire_Folk went to painstaking effort to research actual Japanese legal procedures, to the point that when All Might and Nezu went to give a lecture on ethics and law, they forewent that in favor of directly quoting the Japanese penal code and explaining the legal loopholes to highlight not only how, but also why Mineta can get away with his antics unpunished outside of slapstick, without in turn forcing anyone who subjects him to said slapstick to even worse legal procedures, while acknowledging said issues come from Deliberate Values Dissonance and how it's Disproportionate Retribution, a.k.a worse:Shire_Folk: In every single instance of Mineta's cases of potential indecent acts upon another by way of assault and even his ones that don't count as that but are still him being a creep via attempting to peep on naked/changing girls, the response to his actions goes way too far to work as self-defence in Japan based on a criteria of exceeding self-defence or “only when the harm produced by such act does not exceed the harm to be averted”.
[...]
Mineta cannot face consequences from the authority figures, because acknowledging what he does means acknowledging what the girls did, not in self-defence, but in retaliation, and that is worse. Although we are an English-speaking audience consuming the product, it was made by a Japanese mangaka primarily for a Japanese audience, and we cannot impose our standards upon another country's right to create and enforce their own laws. Our laws; our standards, as Canadians, Americans, British, Australians, New Zealanders, other anglosphere, latinosphere, and other western/north-central Europeans have to take a back seat. Were Mineta to happen in one of our countries, things would (hopefully) be different, because our cultures and laws are different. But I'm not writing a MHA fic that takes place with students from Winnipeg, Edmonton, Vancouver, Victoria, Whitehorse, Yellowknife, Halifax, Gander, St. John's, Montreal, Gatineau, Ottawa, Trois-Rivieres, Thunder Bay, and Toronto all going to a hero school in Kingston. I'm still writing about Japanese kids going to a Japanese hero high school where the adults are not as competent as they should be because plot. There are issues; I'll try to address them, but I'm not waving a wand imposing our laws on them to make myself feel culturally superior to them. I’m working within the framework of the country this takes place in, and never mind that it’s set in the future that looks suspiciously similar to the present but with Quirks, it was written by an author of today who did not go into detail as to the exact wording of legislation or changes to Japan’s Penal Code. That’s not his target audience. Without specific mentions of anything to the contrary, I must assume that Japanese law outside of Quirk-related laws are identical to the laws as they are today in 2022.
So, with all of that taken into account, Mineta likely couldn’t face any legal repercussions for his actions because of the ambiguous language of the law and the actions the girls took against him in retaliation for his harassment. And before anyone mentions Article 37, paragraph (2), these are students without licences that would give them that special professional obligation. It’s the same basic premise for why what goes down in Hosu causes Chief Tsurugame to bark at the boys. Because they were not licensed, and caused excessive injury to Stain (it would need to be argued in a court as to whether or not their actions were necessary and/or excessive, but given that we never saw a trial for Stain and he was just locked away in Tartarus the whole time, I’m not sure exactly how functional their judicial system even is or if it’s degraded to being arrested and going directly to jail. Do not pass Go, do not collect $200), Tsurugame needed to have a talk with the boys for going against the law despite how the result was in the public interest.

Trope idea: Keystone Summoner: Kill the summoner to dispel the summons. Ender Magnolia Mice can die like that.
Ender Magnolia: Can get the Earrings of SP without having unlocked SP since that happens after Gilroy.

How hard is it to get a pic for After Boss Recovery?
One Effect Multiple Methods Magic, a.k.a there's more than one way to skin a cat.
IIRC Not the Intended Use has Yoko talking about how to do ice magic? Also a bit of Power Misidentification. Still, can't be different methods, must be the same magic system. Aria of Sorrow: Demon summoning vs. Direct magic doesn't count. Maybe I was thinking of Dresden Files quote instead.
Dungeon Keeper Ami'' removing teleportation safety limiters does? Or not. That's more a Spell Modifiers trope.
Examples are like Pokemon moves with the exact same typing power accuracy and PP. Or Oblivion purchased or starting spells that are more or less Mana efficient than the player-creatable versions.
Might be better if methods only slightly differ but you get near dupes, like Control (2019): Rare Seize Accelerators can have a 53% improvement or better, but the level below it, Uncommon Seize Accelerators, can have 56% near the upper limit. If they can both get 53-56, then that counts for this. Just need a third example.
This is more like "Redundant Items". Might highly overlap with Better Is Not Better on the Salvage yard. Titan Quest: IIRC The low level stat + rings seem to have overlap at the top of Level-Locked Loot level 8 vs. the bottom of Level 12?

“What? They never said anything like that to—” A memory sparked in Poldo’s mind. “Oh, you mean ‘kicking the dog?’”
The Gnoll’s face seemed to become a little more brittle. “That’s the one,” she said.
“But that was just an expression,” said Poldo. “You know, when Ur’Groom or Briggs or one of the lads in sales couldn’t get to their numbers, they’d say ‘I just need to kick the dog!’ And then they’d step out for a break and… and…”
Somewhere in Poldo’s mind a wall fell, and his stomach twisted when he saw the other side. “Oh gods,” he said. “They were actually kicking someone?”
“Usually not that hard,” said Mrs. Hrurk kindly. “And you never did. I think that’s why he was always saying how nice Mr. Poldo is. Er, you are.”
“Ah, good.” Poldo felt like he had ingested something greasy. It was disturbing that he was remembered for only the slightest of courtesies, and all the more so that those slight courtesies still exceeded the average. “Where is Mr. Hrurk now, anyways?”
Chapter 3 - 4 transition:
“It’s entirely wasteful!” snapped Jynn. “Gods, who but Father would care about accessorizing an army?”
More than any other Shadowkin, Orcs favor a bone motif when decorating...."Wanted!" Poster:
A crocodilian smile spread over Grignot’s face as he nodded to Asherzu. “Your brother seems a most suitable candidate to me,” he said.
“Look at that smarmy grin. The snaggletoothed smile. The eyes are so small and beady—and not even pointing in the same direction!” Heraldin sputtered as he waved the wanted poster in the air. The flyer promised a ten thousand giltin reward for the bard’s capture or death, a summary of his crimes, and a woodcut portrait that looked like the printer had decided to try postmodern cubism. “I’d be offended if this looked anything like me. Or if it looked anything like a Human.”...“Vetchell is in dire peril!” Jynn leaned over the desk. “If you cannot take this threat seriously, then we must speak with the commanding officer at this station.”
The guard finally glanced up from his book, meeting Jynn’s stare with his own heavy-lidded eyes. “Go right ahead, sir.”
“You’re the commander of the city guard,” said Jynn dryly....Chapter 5: Poldo grit his teeth, and made a mental note to have a frank conversation with Mr. Stearn. “I. Don’t. Have. Mice.”...Chapter 10: The door opened into a warehouse of mismatched oddities. There were racks with hundreds of vials of colorful liquids with labels like “RESIST FIRE,” “BREATHE WATER,” “DETECT GOLD,” and every other imaginable pairing of verbs
Lol, Breath / Resist Gold.
“Handy? Those runes will take the magic out of a mage, unshift a shapeshifter’s shape, and strip the bite off any magic weapons,” said Boomer. “They’ll change the tide of your fortunes, they will! Take a couple.”
Heh that second one, as seen in Chapter 17.
“I’m already on it.” The mage held up a silver mirror about the size of her palm in one hand and the sheet of directions in the other. “This is one of those times I wish you could weave solamancy,” she told Jynn. “This needs threads of light and water.”
heh. irony...Fruit Cart: Chapter 12...“It is essential that we find Gorm Ingerson and his party, and they’re not going to just pass us in the street.”...Chapter 15: Bachopel’s Tocatta and Fugue in D-Minor...
“Y-you killed my p-p-puppy. The pet that you gave me when M-M-Mother died.”
The liche avoided the noctomancer’s eyes. “Well, I’m not proud of it. The Leviathan Project had run out of funding, you see, and I hadn’t any other test subjects, but we really felt we were near a breakthrough…...16:The liche turned and caught his eye, and Gorm felt his stomach drop. The window of opportunity to attack the liche was gone. It had never really been an opportunity at all....The light quickly resumed its rapid flickering, blinking on and off at a pace indicative of huge battles, natural disasters, or large cults attempting to reach the gods by sharing a barrel of fermented hemlock. In a way, such cultists succeeded; everyone involved encountered Ignatius’ god, at the minimum....“Is it time for the afternoon report?” asked Poldo, sipping his tea. Then he read the message and promptly sprayed the beverage over his desk.
17:
“No, seriously, what?” demanded Mortus. He put his hands on his hips, prompting groans and winces from the other assassins. The doppelganger wore the form of a middle-aged Halfling, and little else.
“Can’t you put on some clothes?” Deathbloom asked, staring at a patch of sky above their heads....shadow step spell...Gorm, like many residents of the northern Freedlands, held on to an old folk belief that the manner in which an individual wakes up holds omens of what sort of day he or she could expect. Rising to the scent of baking bread was a sign someone dear was due to visit, while waking with a crick in the back meant that you were sure to meet an enemy, and a bobbinjay’s song first thing in the morning was a sign that a good fortune would find you.
Over Gorm’s career, he had discovered several other varieties of such omens....Barty Ficer’s [heh, Artificer]...“Oh, right. I’ll just fetch someone, right?” Burt’s hackles rose. “You Lightlings all sound the same. ‘Oh, laddie, someone’s fallen and hurt themselves! Go find help, boy!’”...Don’t trust dark pools in remote locations with suspiciously still water and a dearth of wildlife nearby.[Cool, Clear Water]...“By using your bloody head!” snapped Gorm. “When an artificer finds a weak spot on a golem, they fix it or cover it in armor! They don’t paint the bloody thing red unless it’s a trap for thrice-cursed fools!”...Doppelganger / Shapeshifter appearances:
Giant Knife Human Greatsword?...18:
Cursing himself for forgetting his shield, Gorm looked around him. The best he could find was a small, silver spoon amidst the shards of a crushed teacup. Maneuvering the spoon into position at the edge of the desk, he could make out a crouching, black-clad form in the reflection of the third window on the far wall.
Mirror technique...Thane made a door out of a window...The Troll tore off its arm as he passed, and wielded the steel appendage like a club against next golem....“The guy in a long coat and a pirate hat,” said Heraldin. “Shouted in nautical terms? Carried a saber? Said ‘yar’ a couple of times?”
“You’re sure it was a pirate?” Gorm’s raised a skeptical eyebrow.
“It’s not the sort of thing you can mistake for something else.” Laruna spoke through gritted teeth as she clutched her wounded arm. “Right down to the big hoop earring.”...’tis my good fortune to find her sleepin’. Makes the killin’ all the easier.”...“Troll!” Kaitha screamed.
Burt turned to find Kaitha standing, her hair wild, her nightclothes filthy, and her face a mask of terror. She was already notching another arrow while her eyes searched for some way out of the alley. “Kaitha! No!” Burt hollered.
It was too late. Kaitha loosed the arrow, striking Thane in the vicinity of his heart....His silver claws, he noticed, were reflexively clenching and unclenching, making soft scissor sounds as they did so.
Scissorhands?...“And this is where it all blows up,” said Heraldin to nobody in particular.
At that point, the universe took a cue from Nove’s principles. The ruined house next to the heroes blew up....19:It was said that what the ladies-in-waiting were waiting for was a different job....
“I’ve got a pair of manacles in my room,” said Matina.
“Perfect. So we… hang on, you’ve got manacles in your room?”
The cleric rolled her eyes. “Oh, don’t try to make it sound weird.”
“I’m not making it sound anything,” said Dev. “It sounds weird. I’m just observing that it sounds weird.”
“You’ve got fifty feet of rope in your pack,” Matina shot back....20:
“Over there. The one in the ridiculous pompadour wig.” Ortson pointed.
“I don’t believe that’s the case,” said Baggs.
“Oh, it’s unmistakably Clubs,” said Ortson. “Listen, you can hear the lout boasting across the hall!”
“Quite so. But I don’t believe that’s a wig,” said Baggs. “Clubs is a Gnome of my clan, you see, and that hairstyle is quite popular among some of my kin.”...
“That’s hardly enough for me. His negligence was criminal,” harrumphed Ortson. “Nobody is above the law!”
Baggs shrugged and sipped his wine. “Perhaps, but with enough money you can usually get out from under it.”...he must have purchased a glamour for the evening, for his golden hair seemed to wave in a breeze that wasn’t there....Torches and Pitchforks?
“Now, look at the lights of the city,” Baggs said, pointing at the tiers below with his pipe. “You can be sure that next to each tiny glow, there’s a person who watched their retirement savings, their pension, their bank account, all of it evaporate faster than the melting snow. And rest assured that they are all beyond anger.”
“They’ll be out for blood.” Ortson paled.
“They already are,” said Goldson. “Especially given those quests you signed.”
“Exactly,” said Baggs. “Finally, consider how many of those lights are moving.”...“It was a mistake coming here,” the Scribkin muttered.
The Wood Gnome on his shoulder chirruped sharply.
“Yes, I know you told me!”...“Is there another kind? Lamia Sisters got declared a F.O.E. this morning.”
“Surely not Pradessa and Maliss!” Poldo had met Andarun’s most powerful Naga on several occasions. “They were two of the first NPCs! They’re patrons of the arts! Pillars of society!”...Poldo stiffened. “Failing well is exactly what I intend to do, Mr. Fitch. It seems we just have different definitions of the term.”
“Well, mine involves sandy beaches and Tinderkin in grass skirts.”...21:
“He’s been thoroughly consecrated,” blurted Genevieve. “It’s like he was blessed by a high priest in death, or slain by a paladin. The ghouls wouldn’t even try taking a bite out of him. The vampires want to drop him down a deep pit, and even then, the hole will probably turn into a sacred site within a few years.”...“I’d have taken it personally,” Gorm added loudly, “if ye used real chains. Like a Durham Brothers or Steel Golems. But a pair of old Hickmans? These things are as flimsy as they are cheap. Never knew why the tall folk buy ‘em.” He flexed and twisted, and the shoddy manacles cracked open....They are signs, to show that we are in the right place. As we walk our own paths. They remind us that all will be as it should.Even when we cannot see how.Gorm thought that a novel idea. Most of the heroes he knew approached prophecy as a formula, a set of detailed instructions along the lines of “Place object of legend A into slot B on sacred altar C, and wait for the path to treasure D to appear.”...“Good,” said the Dwarf with a toothy smile. “Now, this here’s the Second Book of Niln, includin’ his collected notes and commentary on the other prophets. I’m lendin’ it to ye so ye can get it properly copied and archived and whatever else ye’d do for an important book. And ye can bet it’s important, because I’ll be back for it as soon as I’ve visited some old friends.”
Barty Ficer...I swear I’ll confess. I’ll do anything!”
“It’s good of ye to say as much, Barty,” said Gorm. “As it happens, I’m in need of a favor.”...22“Ha! This gate is made from solid oak with steel bracers and is enchanted with the secret wards of the Fane Amada!” the guard crowed. “Your axe won’t do much against it.”
“Perhaps,” said Kaitha. “But the wall over there is patched up with some pine boards and a broken barrel.”
There was a thoughtful silence.
“Um, those have wards too?” the guard suggested.
“I could check for ye,” said Gorm, brandishing his axe....“Yes. Fine. Brother Jynn chooses to regard the mysteries of many things in the Chamber of Silence,” said Rathwyne.
“He what now?”
The High Amada sighed. “He’s studying in the library, if you must speak of things in the old ways.”
“And where’s the library?” asked Gorm.
“You will have found it when you come upon the third portal on the weaveward side.”
Kaitha thought for a moment “So that’s the third door on the…”
“The left, fine. The third door on the left,” conceded Rathwyne, pointing to the keep. The courtyard rang out with...“They’ve assembled an impressive collection of forbidden grimoires,” said Jynn. “Encyclopedia Daemonica, the Seven Cryptical Books of Solumn, a translation of the Al’Thadac Shards, the Psalms Mannocolai; the list goes on.”...Gorm felt his blood run cold. Demonology was among the darkest of dark sorceries, considered worse than necromancy in many circles. After all, everything summoned by the necromantic arts had at least had business on Arth at one point, but demons were never meant to be in the mortal realms. Low magic might have been even worse. It was the magic of the Sten, the rituals and rites that changed fate and bound the gods.
“What could drive a wizard to that?” Gorm wondered aloud. “No, wait, never mind. It’s—”
“Immortality,” said Jynn and Kaitha at the same time.
“Aye, of course it’s bloody wizards and their thrice-cursed immortality,” said Gorm. “Whenever there’s some terrible darkness anywhere on Arth, it’s a good bet an old mage decided that he shouldn’t have to shuffle off this mortal coil—even if it means shovin’ everyone else off it instead.”
“We’re all familiar with the lengths my father would go to for the sake of avoiding death,” said Jynn. “But you’ll recall that the Leviathan Project was commissioned by the Freedlands and Ruskan.”
“Fair enough,” said Gorm. “I don’t see how any of this relates to demonic pigs and dogs.”
“It’s the story of the Leviathan,” said Jynn. “When the gods vanquished the great darkness Mannon, he bound himself to a fish. In time, the fish became the Leviathan.”
“And you believe that the ultimate evil possessed a fish?” said Kaitha.
“Not possessed,” said Jynn. “Possession is when a supernatural entity forces a mortal to act against its own will.”
“So it was more like an incarnation,” said Kaitha.
“No, that’s when a supernatural being is born into a mortal form,” said Jynn. “There’s no original mortal bound up in that process.”
“I thought that was an avatar,” said Gorm.
The mage shook his head. “An avatar is a supernatural being lending its power to a mortal to achieve a mutual purpose.”
“I think I fought some cultists like that back when I was running with Crimson Justice,” said Kaitha. “When we killed the strongest of them, Ysether-soth the Frog Demon burst out and attacked.”
“That sounds more like a dark pact,” said Jynn. “That’s when an evil force inhabits a willing mortal to gain access to our reality. It’s set free on Arth when the mortal dies.”
“I thought that’s what happened with Mannon and the Leviathan,” said Kaitha.
“And it all sounds like possession to me,” said Gorm.
“There are similarities, but there are important differences,” Jynn explained. “My father and his colleagues believed Mannon and the great fish were tied together in death by prophecy and fate. Aya of Blades called the resulting creature ‘soul-bound’ in her notes, which is the term Father used for Patches and the pig. I believe soul-binding requires both the mortal and the supernatural to occupy parallel threads in the weave’s matrix with a concurrent termination point.”...“And ye know them,” said Gorm. “Because you’re a thrice-cursed brilliant wizard, Jynn, trained by the Academy. Ye were the big poobah of the blue bird—”
“High Councilor of the Circle of the Red Hawk,” Jynn interjected.
Heh, poobah...The wizard shook his head. “Y-y-you don’t k-know me,” he managed.
“Then that makes two of us,” said Kaitha, turning to leave. “Come on, Gorm. You can’t help someone who won’t help himself.”...translation glasses handy. The thick lens cast the book below in various shades of green and showed the ancient script in modern Imperial....“Uh, yeah. Sure. I just…” Jynn shook his head as he pulled up a crate. “I was getting ready to follow you. I assumed you’d have given up and left without me.”
“I guess we knew you better than that,” said Kaitha.
“I suppose you did,” said the omnimancer with a smile....“That’s not… Look, it’s really complicated.” Laruna struggled to find the right words. “Jynn saved my life, and he gave up a lot to do it. I’ll always, you know, have feelings for him. About him. In his vicinity. But he was never honest, and you don’t lie about being an… you know, an omnimancer. What if we had stayed together and had kids? I mean, think about the children—”
“Let me stop you there,” said Kaitha. “It’s not complicated. You want to fight the liche again. It would be good for your career, and you know we can do this. Everything else is irrelevant.”...23:He busked in the city square under the name of Sanderson by day...The children had found an old wand somewhere, one with enough magic to shoot out a few sparks of sorcery...Don’t look her right in the eye, or you won’t get a chance to use a sword.” The last warning was called out as the bannerman shuffled off toward a table with a dark-robed wraith.....“But you could flee and join the refugees in Andarun.”
Betelle’s face was the blend of exasperation and contempt typical of an adolescent educating a parental figure. She plucked another flyer off the table and held it up in reply. Its headline proclaimed in bold block letters:
EVEN ANDARUN WILL FALL.Tyren nodded and waved in reluctant assent. “All right, yes, fine. Not Andarun. You could flee somewhere else.”
The young woman grabbed up another flyer from the table. It read:
THERE IS NOWHERE SAFE FROM THE UNDEAD.“I see your point,” Tyren conceded, “but I’m sure there’s something you could—”
Exuding triumph—so much so that it almost warranted a smile—Betelle picked up yet another flyer.
THERE IS NOTHING YOU CAN DO TO SAVE YOURSELF.....24:“Well, some are also interested in procuring services,” said the solamancer. “I’ve had two people offer me gold to do assassin work.”
“Better than the proposition I got,” said Kaitha, nodding to a table set in a dark alcove in the wall....“What is it?” asked Kaitha.
“A sign from the gods,” said Gorm, standing. “They’ve decided to start being useful.”
“Is it one of those pamphlets from the Temple of Oppo?” asked Jynn. “Honestly, I never understood why they do that.”
“It’s a tip about the bard,” said Gorm. “I’m to check it out in the back alley. If I’m not back in ten minutes, ye know what to do.”
“Drink your ale,” said Laruna.
“And order me a cold one.” Gorm headed for the back door....“But why pick a fight with Andarun’s most dangerous gangster?” asked Gorm. “Benny Hookhand obviously didn’t get ye.”
“Exactly,” hissed Heraldin. “But he likely thinks he did.”
“Don’t talk as much as you used to, do you, Heraldin?” asked Mr. Plank, prodding at the prisoner with the tip of a wooden club.
The bard leveled a burning glare, but said nothing....“Bones,” swore the Dwarf.
“Yeah, we’ll get to those eventually,” said Benny, stretching Heraldin’s legs. “But we’re going to start with your skin, fingernails, that sort of thing. It’s going to be slow and… eh?” The crime lord stopped and looked at his left hand with a confused scowl. He was holding a small slip of paper....A strangled scream rang out amidst the chaos as Gaist put a fishing net to creative and deadly use. The goon’s corpse hadn’t yet slumped to the floor before the doppelganger was at Heraldin’s side. Without irony, he offered the bard a riverman’s gaff.
Heraldin sneered down at the gaff. “And what am I supposed to do with that?” he demanded.
By way of demonstration, Gaist reached out to snag the face of the flail-wielding thug with the thin hook, snapped the struggling man’s neck, and flipped him through the trapdoor and into the river in one fluid motion.
“Well, we can’t all do that!” snapped Heraldin.Gaist wore a hint of a smile as he shrugged....“No, I re-wove your spell!” Jynn sounded much happier about it. “Let’s try it again!”
“That’s going to be difficult,” said Kaitha, loosing an arrow. It caught a goon in the back, and he fell screaming through a window.
“No, it’s quite simple,” said Jynn. “I think I could rework the lattice to—”
“She means ye’ve run out of targets.” Gorm pulled his axe from the remains of one of the thugs.
Jynn and Laruna looked around the wreckage of the room, covered in splintered wood and the mortal remains of Benny’s henchmen. “Ah, so we have,” sighed the omnimancer....The wizard stepped aside, and behind him Burt could see Patches padding into the torchlight. Thin leather straps traced dark lines across the dog’s fur, connected to a small saddle on his back.
“We assumed it would be more comfortable, yes?” said Heraldin.
Burt leapt up and threw his arms around Patches’ neck. He couldn’t have spoken anyway, and burying his face in the dog’s fur conveniently hid the tears streaming down the Kobold’s muzzle.
“All right,” said Gorm, giving Burt an uncomfortable pat on the shoulder. “All right, lad. It’s only a saddle.”
“Yeah.” Burt sniffed as he tried to compose himself. “It just says something, you know?”....25“If you spoke right now, I’m sure you’d be intolerably smug.”
The weaponsmaster’s eyes conveyed sufficient smugness without the benefit of spoken words....Gaist sat motionless, but Heraldin had learned to look closer. There was a barely perceptible tightening around the mouth beneath the weaponsmaster’s crimson scarf. A tensing of the muscles around the eyes that brought the doppelganger’s harsh stare closer to an introspective squint. A faint motion, more of a hint of a nod than an actual affirmation.
It wasn’t much, but Heraldin smiled anyway as he picked up the pieces. It was the answer he had expected....Jynn shrugged off the accusation. “My entire life is a series of events that could have been great if they went another way. What if Mother didn’t die? What if Father’s research had been successful? What if my marriage to Marja had kept Father alive? What if the Al’Matrans never recruited me? What if you and I had done things differently?”
He dismissed these alternative realities with a wave of his hand. “We could spend an age wondering about the things that could have been. None of them will be. It’s best to set such feelings aside and focus on the work at hand.”
The solamancer finally looked at him again, albeit with the same face she might have used if he had grown a tentacle from his ear. “You really can dismiss your feelings that easily, can’t you?”
“I already have,” said Jynn. “There is a job to be done.”
“Then you and I are just, what? Colleagues?”
“Professional acquaintances, if you prefer.”
The heat and fury seemed to drain out of the solamancer’s face, leaving a small, tight smile. “As you’d have it,” she said coldly. “I’ll take my breakfast outside, if none of you mind.”
Jynn watched her go for a moment before he realized that the other occupants of the table were staring at him. “What?” he asked.
Heraldin and Gaist shared a sidelong glance. “Nothing,” said the bard.
“The bard may be dressed like a fool, but you play the part better,” said Burt....a poster with a woodcut of a saber-toothed dire cat dangling from a rope over a spiked pit. The caption below the picture read “HANG IN THERE.”...Either it was the work of a master fletcher, or it was made by magic such as that held in the Poor Man’s Quiver. And now that he looked closer, he could see silver wisps trailing from the shaft as the magical arrow slowly dissipated. It would completely dissolve within a few days.
He knew that Kaitha of House Tyrieth wasn’t the only hero to have a Poor Man’s Quiver. Then again, how many adventurers who could afford such distinctive ammunition were also traveling with a solamancer capable of blasting half of a wall to charred rubble and someone wielding an axe to brutal effect on the inner doorway? Flinn rubbed the stub beneath his metallic claw as he thought about the axe that took his own hand.
This was Gorm Ingerson’s work. He could feel it in his bones....26“So, what happens now?” Kaitha muttered to Burt.
“They fight it out,” said the Kobold from Gorm’s shoulder. He shifted and swayed to keep balance as the Dwarf negotiated the loose stones of the beach. “The winner gets to decide what happens to us.”
“Of course it’s trial by combat,” said Kaitha. “It’s always trial by combat!”
“And I suppose the Elves do it better?” The ember of Burt’s thin cigarette glowed brighter as he puffed at it. “Teach us savage Shadowkin the right way to settle a matter?”
“I’m just saying there has to be better qualifications for leadership than a talent for killing people.”
“Yeah? Like maybe whoever’s parents are a bigger deal? Or maybe whoever has the most money? Oh wait—those are almost always the same thing.” The Kobold clapped his paws to his cheeks in mock surprise....Darak looked in horror at his bloodied hammer and backed away. “Da… da go’bola rarbargfeeba,” he said, his voice cracking and choked....27A miasma of dark magic emanating from him was corroding away the plaque on the wall,...He saw himself drinking alone in his offices, blithely ignoring the soldiers asking him for help. He saw the fights with his wife, scaring the little girl hiding in the corner. And he saw little Aubey playing on his knee, her tawny curls bouncing around her smile. An ache roiled in the dark cavern where his heart used to be....“It’s been a siege for days,” barked Fenrir Goldson, without looking up from the paperwork on his desk. “It’s about to be a bloodbath.”
Weaver Ortson stood between the titans of industry with a beleaguered scowl on his face. “You’re talking about different things again,” he sighed with waning patience.
“Not at all, Mr. Ortson. I was just commenting to Mr. Goldson that I can see the smoke from the undead incursion in the southeast.” Mr. Baggs shrugged. “Their arrival will send the stock tumbling.”
“Which is what I was talking about,” said Mr. Goldson. “We’ve been propping our share price up with a few rapid acquisitions, but with the attack on Andarun the threat indexes have gone mad. The investors will be out for blood.”...Ortson was flabbergasted. “And what of the people in the streets? What about your workers and colleagues? Where are your principles?”
A hint of a scowl creased Baggs’ face. “We are standing on our principles.”
“Buy low, sell high,” Goldson said, just before he unleashed another green sprite with a muttered order.
“Keep to the investment strategy, no matter what the markets do,” said Baggs.
“Watch fundamentals, not sentiment,” Goldson barked.
“Those, Mr. Ortson, are key among our principles,” said Mr. Baggs. “Although we also hold it true and dear that private companies should not be pressed upon to fund public institutions beyond the exorbitant tax rates we already pay. We hope that Andarun can rally and defeat this threat—”
“We’ll make a killing if they do,” Goldson muttered to himself as he made a note in his ledger.
Baggs didn’t skip a beat. “But if they cannot, if darkness triumphs, then our duty will still be to our investors. And the responsibility for the tragedy will fall upon the city-state and its institutions.”
“It’s time to hold government accountable,” said Goldson.
“And what of the business community’s part in this mess?” Ortson demanded. “Need I remind you of the role your firm has played in this calamity?”
“There’s already been much done to hold business responsible,” said Baggs. “Surely you’ll recall that Lamia Sisters took a tumble last month.”
“And they were thrown over the Wall, too,” added Goldson.
“Were they really?” asked Baggs.
“M’hmm, yes. And a number of other bankers with them. James Sapphire, that Mr. Stearn fellow, half the board of J.P. Gorgon…”
“Ghastly. I thought people were just talking about their share price.” Baggs shrugged. “But there. Several bankers paid the ultimate price, and many more have been shut down.”...Poldo was too fond of his internal organs to inflict Dwarven whiskey on them....Seems to me if the forces of good weren’t adept at that sort of dramatic, last-minute victory over the forces of darkness, a place as volatile as Arth would have burned itself out long ago.”...A voice spoke up behind the four heroes. “My people call it Worbo Zaberb’farast, the Path of the Stars.”[Stargate lol?]...You can’t just hand them a bit of paper and call them a hero! Or a Dwarf, for that matter.”
“Congratulations. You’re a Dwarven hero.” A nearby clerk handed a small red booklet and a bundle of loose pages to an Orc across the table.
“Da gub Zed’farast!” The Orc held his new papers over his head as he shouted back to the lines of Shadowkin behind him. Several cheers and whoops rang out in reply.
“Yes, well, it takes a lot of steps to get there,” said Korgen airily....28It took a certain sort.
When need arose, however, the priesthood of Mordo Ogg did have one supreme duty: to make sure the dead stayed that way.
Ignatius knelt prostrate before the statue, arms outstretched, until his searching fingers found the two buttons located in the skeleton’s feet. Pressing both of them opened a small alcove in the god of death’s throne. With considerable effort, the old man drew out a suit of ancient chainmail, a cudgel with a head of black iron, and a dark helmet with its faceplate fashioned into the likeness of a skull....“I thought the sky looked portentous today,” said Kaitha.
“You can tell what’s happening by the weather?” asked Heraldin.
“Oh yeah,” said Laruna. “You always check the clouds before a big job.”
“It’s the influence of low magic,” said Jynn. “When enough fates intersect at a given point in time and space, it can warp the weave enough to distort weather patterns.”...“It’s thousands of tons of flying stone,” snapped Detarr. “Try to have some imagination.”...29:“Aye.” Gorm’s shoulders fell. “You’re right. No matter what happens, we’re in this together.” Gorm stuck his fist into the center of the group.
“Always.” Kaitha stepped up to press her fist against Gorm’s. One by one, the other heroes did the same, shaping their huddle into a six-spoked wagon wheel.
Burt scampered up Gorm’s arm. “What… what are you doing? What is this?” he muttered in Gorm’s ear.
“We’re doing the hands in the circle thing,” Gorm murmured.
“Yeah, but why do you do it?” asked Burt. “Why’s everybody looking at each other like that? This is weird, right? Is this not weird for Lightlings?”...“Hang on,” panted the mage. “We’re not all accustomed to scaling sheer surfaces.”
Kaitha held her tongue as she shot another curious specter.
The Wall had stood as the defining feature of Andarun’s eastern border since it was built by the Sten, and modern architects had been unwilling or unable to alter the great edifice’s stonework when adding a new, shorter wall to the southern limits of the Base. As such, the corner between the Wall and Andarun’s southern fortifications was marked by regular gaps and crannies. They made for a notoriously easy climb to the southern ramparts. Kaitha had scaled it one night on a dare while drunk....The arrow flew straight and true for the vampire’s heart, until the undead woman’s hand snapped up and plucked it from the air. She held the sizzling bolt in a pale fist, her cruel smile unwavering. “Oh no, my dear,” she said. “I am Lady Devalla Carabae the Third, Mistress of a Thousand Thralls. I do not make jokes. I do not engage in idle banter. I do not show mercy. And you most certainly cannot ‘handle this.’...Bow of Unrelenting Flames...Son of a Liche Chapter 30
“I wish that was true,” said Jynn, nodding at something behind them.
Gorm turned and watched as the stricken Bonereaper scooped three wailing skeletons into the Dwarf-sized hole in its chest. The joint bones and fingers that made up its innards quickly dismantled the undead troops and passed their various components throughout its wounded body. Broken bones were replaced, skeletal scaffolding was reinforced, and gaps were closed with cadaverous replacements. Moments later, the Bonereaper stood back up again, three new skulls emerging amongst the chittering mass at the construct’s center.
“It just took their bones,” said Gorm as Dwarves and Shadowkin fell back into formation around them.
“The name may lack subtlety, but it does convey the right idea.” Jynn took a step back as the creature gave an unholy howl, only to be drowned out moments later by another cry echoing through the burning city....“Stop pouting,” said the bard. “It was a valiant stand! It doesn’t have to be your last one.”...he shouted, and then he was gone.
Jynn blinked at the cloud of dust where the berserker had stood.[Dust run]...“No.” Kaitha notched another arrow, watching the ghastly forms circling above them. Ghosts and specters had swarmed to the fight, and vampires lurked among the glowing souls like sharks amid a school of fish. “The thralls are still alive. Or… moving. Whatever.”“I get it,” muttered Laruna. “So, they’ll all die when we kill her?”
“Yeah, but it’ll work faster if we do it the other way around,” said Kaitha softly. She loosed the arrow, but it fell well short of the vampire she’d aimed at. “Every one we kill makes her a little weaker. If we kill enough, she can’t keep those defenses up.”...“Besides, ‘Mistress of a Couple Dozen Thralls’ doesn’t exactly sound impressive.”[minds think alike]...31From the haunted corners of his memory, Tyren saw the same rebellion in the brown eyes of a toddler claiming she’d not go to bed for the night. He heard her laugh as she bounced on his knee, helped her wipe away tears as he cleaned the scrape on her elbow, marveled at the radiance of her smile as she bit into her first tea cake, held her close as they watched fireflies dance in the garden at Vetchell. Her cheeks were thinner now, her features those of a woman rather than a babe, but there was no mistaking his daughter’s face.[Aubren / Aubey]...We could have ruled Arth together as father and son.”...
“Little Aubey,” said Tyren.
“Aubren,” she corrected. “I mean, nobody’s called me Aubey since you passed… well, I thought you were dead.”...32:The priest had been kind and optimistic, but not so much as to lie when Feista asked her frantic questions. Yes, it was bad. No, you couldn’t give a child salve, not with the known risks. No, the magic alone wouldn’t fix everything; the fracture had been present too long, the crushing of the bones too complete. Yes, the pup would walk again. Would he run again? That was a harder question....33:Gaist gently elbowed him in the ribs.
“He even shaded you in three-point lighting,” said Heraldin, peering at the document. “Did you bribe the artist?”
The weaponsmaster gave the bard a firmer nudge.
“No, I’m serious.” Heraldin ran a finger over the woodcut as he searched. “Do you know how many women will ask to look at your heroes’ license? An impressive one can mean the difference between going home alone and a chance at—ow! All right, that one hurt!”
Gaist nodded to the front of one of the lines. Heraldin looked and saw a hulking, tattooed figure approaching a desk occupied by a one-eyed clerk.
“Gods, is that Mr. Brunt?” the bard exclaimed. “I thought Gorm killed him at Bloodroot, but I’ll eat a dragon’s toenail if that isn’t the big oaf.”
Gaist nudged him again.
“You’re right, it definitely is,” said Heraldin. “And look, he’s in the wrong line. That isn’t for NPC papers. If I didn’t know better, I’d think he was trying to—”
“Brunt… hero!” The Ogre’s rumbling was clear even over the din of the busy guildhall.[Important nudge]...Elemental Plane of Violet...Remember that there's snippets in the Acknowledgements, Stingers, for both 1 and 2 books...Dragonfired Chapter 1:Preya could time her day by the pages. The contours of the queen’s favored stories all fit into the same, well-worn groove. Early in the book the protagonist and the object of her desire—this time a Scribkin duchess and a Tinderkin rogue—experienced an instant and undeniable attraction. Their lust was invariably complicated by circumstances such as prior engagements, other lovers, disapproving families, ongoing wars, infernal magic or—in the infamously complex The Warlock’s Daughter—all of the above[...]A sudden interruption would follow the private encounter with clockwork regularity.[heh, clockwork][...]heralded some fatal misunderstanding, tragic confusion, insidious deception, or a patriarchal sorcerer hurling fireballs from the back of a manticore—it must be said that The Warlock’s Daughter stood out in many ways as a marked departure for the author.[...]Willam had become Will-was, wax poetic about what would never be, and then take her own life.
The appeal of books about lovelorn suicide was a mystery to Preya. She and Mr. Havenbrook loved each other of course; it took a lot of love to stay together for thirty years and three children. They’d saved enough to buy a little cottage on Drakehead Lake and planned to retire there together. Certainly she’d grieve if the fates took her husband before their plans came to fruition, but a few months in a black veil after a modest funeral would be the extent of it; nobody would catch Preya Havenbrook yelling for a poisonous snake or a vial of nightshade. She’d take that retirement money and get herself a little apartment on the Teagem Sea, where the wine flowed freely and was poured by well-tanned young people in grass skirts. No doubt Mr. Havenbrook would pursue a similar hypothetical course of action should the fates be cruel, and good for him.[...]The maids had a system of knocks and taps on the walls they used to track the movements of the royals and ensure that no unfortunate staff members got stuck in a room with the young newlyweds....Chapter 2:Any crystal ball or scrying pool set to peer at a spot within three miles of the island would only display a curt cease and desist notice....A Wood Gnome wearing a red squirrel’s pelt squeaked by way of answer. The Gnomes of Clan Fengeld, or Domovoy, communicated with taller folk using a dialect of Imperial that was actually nuanced, complex and— Poldo had been surprised to discover—copiously laced with profanity and lewd remarks[...]A third Wood Gnome, a woman wearing a brown rat’s skin, chittered something and thrust her fist in the air.
Poldo blanched. “Well, I… I, ah, I probably wouldn’t phrase it as such.”
Brown Rat repeated herself emphatically.
“Where would you even get a cucumber that large? But, ah, no—look, I appreciate the, ah, the sentiment. We are all frustrated with the lawyer-monks, but—”...“Thank you, Brother Atticus. I have truly enjoyed this conversation,” said Poldo with both honesty and malice. “And now it is with equal pleasure that I must bid you good day.”
Oopa of Many Hues was having a very bad day.
Usually a bad day meant that the olive prices rose right after she unloaded a barrel at the market, or that a client skipped out in paying for the information, or—on one horrible occasion—that the family goat got loose in the silk market. When it comes to expensive tastes, nothing beats a goat in a silk market.
But today was worse. She longed for the days when her worst problems were an empty purse, a half-eaten bolt of fabric, and a nanny goat with a bad case of indigestion.[Evil Kesh olive market! Appears / mentioned in all 3 books]...mentalopod. It’s dangerous if it’s too fresh, but if you wait too long the brain squid isn’t even wriggling anymore. The chef here always gets it right.”She pointed to one of the faintly purple, severed appendages pulling itself across her plate toward freedom.[...]“Only in the sense that it’s never going to have its day,” said Merrin. “Listen, kid, I know ballad writing looks easy, but there’s a lot to a good story. It’s not enough to just give any old Jack Cowfarmer a magic sword, send him off to fight some scargs, and… and… and… and… and… and…”
Heraldin startled. Merrin’s eyes had gone wide and so dilated that they were almost black. She picked up her fork and began jabbing it mechanically into her own arm.
“Merrin? Merrin, are you feeling well?” Heraldin asked, snatching the fork from her hand.
“Whoo!” said Merrin a moment later, shaking off the spell. “All right. All right. I’m better now.”
“What was—”
The Scribkin brushed his concern aside. “Some of the livelier mentalopod put up a fight on the way down. Tickles your skull from the inside.” She saw the prong-marks in the leathery skin of her forearm and laughed. “This one’s got spirit.”...“Is it the squid?” Heraldin asked, then leapt back as the Scribkin grabbed a knife and held it aloft.
“Alleee….” slurred the Gnome.
“A little help!” Heraldin called, fending off Merrin’s clumsy stab with his fork.
The agent lurched from her chair and started marching toward the kitchen with the plodding determination of a giant golem. A couple of patrons gasped, and much of the restaurant’s table staff rushed over.
“The brain squid’s too fresh, Janisss!” The head waiter shouted to the Naga in the kitchen while trying to dodge wooden swings from the spellbound Gnome. “Too fresh!”
Heraldin grimaced as a busboy tackled Merrin to the floor. By rights, a plate of botched mentalapod and the ensuing fracas should have been the biggest disaster of the evening, but it paled in comparison with the agent’s implicit ultimatum. His musical career and financial comeback were on hold until he could convince his former companions to let him write a ballad about them.
There were a lot of reasons to think that they’d be reluctant to grant such a request.
For starters, they’d heard Heraldin sing....Gorm left the conjunction unsaid. “I remember this time we went to the dungeon of Mathrax the Foul. Kidnapper. Slaver. Specialized in snatching kids and… and doin’ things to ’em in front of a crystal ball.”[oh. Crystal ball as vid cam...]...“Cigarette?” A bony paw extended from Gorm’s rucksack, holding a Shireton’s Best.
Gorm smiled at the offer; a conciliatory cigarette from the Kobold said a lot. Specifically, it said, I want to offer you something, so that you know we’re still good friends, but I also know that you hate cigarettes....Chapter 3:Asherzu sighed and rested her forehead against her fingertips. “Borpo…”
“Or her receipts.” The warrior shot the chairwoman an egalitarian grin.
The CEO’s unchanged expression suggested that mild sexism was the least of her concerns. Borpo quietly slid his axe under the table and eased back into his seat.
Asherzu let her breath out through her tusks. Not for the first time, she regretted ever thinking that leading a tribe would have prepared her for running a business.[...]Shadowkin customs offered no way to merge or centralize ancient family designations without losing more than was gained.[...]Working Association Research Group, or the WARG[...]“Do we have a mission?” asked Pogrit, matriarch of the Fub’Fazar Clan of Gnolls.
“No, and that is the problem we must solve,” said Asherzu. “Lightling corporations all have missions.”
“Such as the ones they give their heroes,” said Borpo, nodding.
“Like ‘kill twenty Bloat-boars?’” suggested Guglug.
“Or ‘bring me five Dire Muskrat spleens?’” Izek said.[...]Her father, in his wisdom, had once remarked that the only difference between being on track and stuck in a rut is the intended destination. “I meant a bold statement that echoes our purpose to the ages,” she told the board. “A declaration of why we exist.”
“I usually leave that sort of thing to the shamans and priests.” Guglug waved a webbed hand dismissively.
“As a company,” Asherzu growled. “Why does Warg Incorporated exist?”
“We have the charter,” said Izek. “We wrote it not half a year ago. Is that not our mission?”
“Yes, correct!” Asherzu felt a glimmer of hope. “That is the sort of mission we are looking for. But it is too long. No one can recite the whole thing—that was not a challenge to do so, Borpo.”
Borpo sat back down, deflated.....The lawyer-monks stared back at him impassively; at least, he thought of them as impassive. He couldn’t be sure, as their faces were entirely concealed by the long, crimson hoods draped over them, and most of their hunched bodies were obfuscated by enchanted quills, ledgers, contracts, and office supplies that swarmed around the lawyers like flies around cattle. “Nevertheless, it seems probable to me that our eviction is due to traveling with a Troll.”...The nose of any breed of Gnoll, from Bugbears to Kobolds, was as keen as a bloodhound’s. Knowing someone’s diet from a waft of their breath or sorting through the textured scents of a hallway to deduce who had passed through it were nothing to a Gnoll. They could smell fear, and guilt, and a hope that nobody would look in the cupboard anytime soon.
Other children wondered how mothers always knew; Gnoll pups held no such uncertainty.[... Gnolls have dog-like names]Dogo whimpered as thick tears rolled down his face. Little Terrie was staring back with a defiance that was both enraging and familiar to Feista. Rex leaned indifferently on his crutch, waiting for the consequences to fall so he could get back to ignoring them in favor of his adventure novels. It was enough to make Mrs. Hrurk wonder why she had been so excited for him to learn to read.[...]There’s no time for your mischief today.”“But apparently there’s time to lecture us,” grumbled Terrie.Mrs. Hrurk stared daggers at her daughter. Had Feista ever spoken to her own mother with such insolence? Yet the girl had a point. There wasn’t time to teach them a lesson. “Since you are so interested in painting, you will repaint the hallways outside Mr. Zug’Gath’s apartment yourselves. Flat gray, as it was before!” she added quickly....Information is power.
Not in the conventional sense of power, like armies and heroes and enchanted weapons. Never bring a book to a knife fight. But the right information, known at the right time, deployed with care and precision, can best any weapon. If you know where your enemy sleeps, there doesn’t need to be a knife fight at all.[...]The right knowledge could raise armies or raze cities. [Fun with Homophones]

Attack power determination timing: Noted in other Castlevanias in GoodBadBug.Miscellaneous Games, but is that a bug or a quirk of the engine? There must be Stats-Tradeoff Equipment or other equipment that you can use to get higher stats temporarily, and you must be able to change equipment on the fly, like Real-Time with Pause or something. Usually can't be exploited by games where you change equips at set points like Transistor or Ender Lilies. Maybe make that trope first? Maybe "mid-battle equipment change exploitation", such as with GoodBadBugs.Platform Game: LittleBigPlanet: A glitch with the Sackpocket and the Boost Boots can allow the player to fly anywhere with the Boost Boots. First, equip the Boost Boots and dash in the direction you want to go in. Then, while you're dashing, quickly open the Sackpocket and switch to another item, then back to the Boost Boots. When you put the Boost Boots back on, you'll be able to dash again. Now repeat this, and you'll be able to go anywhere that isn't blocked off. This can cause hilarious effects, like flying over all of the traps and skipping straight to the end of the level. It's even possible to get to "The Heroes Finally Defeat Newton...Oh"note without even unlocking Swoop or the two marbles you need to get him. Instead, it's possible to play "Masque Maker's Tower," get the Boost Boots, leave, and skip to the former level. An example of the Flying Boost Boots can be seen here.

- Contraptionology!: As said in Chapter 17
, this is the conflict between Discord and the Nightmare, or under their first names, Change and Constancy, but another way to look at it is described in "Epilogue(s)":The Princess shook her regal head. "Is that how the Nightmare introduced itself to you?" she said. "Ever does it hold that delusion close to its heart. The primitive ponies that the Nightmare once guarded may have known it as 'Constancy', certainly. But they also had another name for it; and with every endless lingering winter, every sullen, unmoving heat wave of summer, with every foal and every plant that stubbornly failed to thrive and grow, they cursed that name. 'Stagnation', they called it. And bitterly did they weep at it, just as bitterly as they wept at the unmitigated chaos of Discord's reign." - Hades II: A Zeus Boon message against stasis and stagnation:Zeus: Some mortals are such fools to be enticed by the promise of a new Golden Age. Combo bonus or something, Combo Incentive perhaps as a Super-Trope for when using a combo is more than just Combo using a move in rapid succession. Not just a Multi-hit move like Pokemon where every hit deals basically the same amount of damage formula.
Chain Lethality Enabler related, also there's kill skills that don't boost damage or anything, like One Step From Eden money giver thing. Aggressive Play Incentive related.
Combo Incentivizing Damage, subtrope of Aggressive Play Incentive. Like Witcher's Sword.
- Ender Lilies: Longer into a combo, the more damage a hit deals.
- Genshin Impact: Each hit of a character's attack combo has its own damage value.
- Shantae and the Pirate's Curse: Hitting multiple enemies with the Dash Attack deals more damage each hit. Chain Lethality Enabler?
- Metal Slug 4: Arcade version: The Metal Slug cannon normally does 200 damage to enemies. However if you manage to shoot through a soldier with a cannon before it hits an enemy vehicle, the damage dealt to the soldier will be added to the damage dealt to the vehicle. So shooting through one soldier can deal 400 damage, shooting through 2 soldiers can deal 600 damage, and so on.

- Shantae and the Pirate's Curse: What the man on Saliva Island has been looking for, but given that the Magical Incantation he uses is Petrify, it doesn't work.
Free / Zero Cost Ability: Abilties that don't cost a resource to use, unlike other similar abilities. Usually a last-resort ability but may be not.
- Castlevania: The Lethal Joke Item key subweapon in Castlevania: Rondo of Blood and Castlevania: Dracula X is mainly for opening a few locked doors, but like all other subweapons, it has an Item Crash. The key's Item Crash looks silly (Richter or Maria rises into the air with the key in hand, then falls with a question mark over their head), but you're invulnerable during the animation and it costs zero hearts, so you can dodge attacks with ease. The key also damages any enemies it directly touches while you're floating, and you float higher than a normal jump, so you can kill enemies on upper levels from below (again, for zero hearts).
- Ruphand: An Apothecary's Adventure: Zero BP Cost badges.
- Touhou Luna Nights: Double Jump is zero MP cost but generates knives that can be absorbed to get MP.
- A Very Long Rope to the Top of the Sky: Zero Mana spells, I think Prayer, or Siphon to get back MP.
- ENDER LILIES: Quietus of the Knights: Zero cost Relics, like the Parry one, or the And Your Reward Is Clothes ones.

Then you need to talk to Mathiu, who will draft a letter formally requesting Leon's services... at least, so long as he's not performing his function as strategist by offering to advance the plot, which always overrides the letter.

“Action scene” doesn’t mean this technique is limited to novels in which things blow up. “There I was, dressed in nothing but a towel in the most expensive suite in the Plaza Hotel, the man who thought he was marrying a seasonings heiress expec-ted any minute. But that wasn’t who I found when I answered the door ...” works just as well as “There I was, dressed in nothing but a towel in the most expensive suite in the Plaza Hotel, the gunfire from the hallway getting closer and closer ...”

The Gum on the Mantelpiece
In which the reader is unintentionally misled
Irina entered the nursery to ensure a fire would be roaring when her two beloved sisters arrived. Before bending to stir the coals, she plucked from her mouth the moist pink wad of gum she had been chewing since coming to Petersburg from the family’s country estate. The mantelpiece was bare, and Irina planted the large, wet bolus of gum firmly upon it.
At that precise instant, Uncle Vanya, passing through the conservatory, paused at the piano to play one eerie, dissonant chord, which seemed to hang suspended in the air, presaging misfortunes to come.
“Irina!” Masha said with delight, entering the nursery. Her cheeks were pink from the wintry winds, and cold still rose up off her thick and luxurious furs. Of the three, Masha had always been the most fashionable, and treasured her furs more than anything, except perhaps for her beloved sisters. Masha threw her arms wide and crossed the room to embrace dear Irina, the sleeve of her most beloved sable coming very very close to the sticky lump of gum, kept soft and warm and really sticky by the flames that now leapt below it as it lurked there on the mantelpiece, nearly itself a glowering presence in the room, hungry and malevolent, like a sea anemone waiting for prey to swim by. It seemed only through some divine intervention that the sleeve was unharmed.Advertisement
“Irina! Masha!” cried Natasha, as she entered the room to see them warmly embracing. Natasha was the prettiest, and the most vain, and her sisters had lovingly teased her since they were little about her long blonde hair, which she wore always loose, though it wasn’t the custom. Just as Natasha ran to her sisters, an ominous wind blew through an open window and lifted up her long, beautiful hair to swirl about her shoulders, floating like a defenseless blonde cloud, innocent and unaware of any danger, only millimetres - counted in the French style - from the gum on the mantelpiece.
“Come, let us go to another room and slowly reveal to each other our unhappinesses!” Natasha said.
“Yes! Let’s do!” said Masha, and the three departed.
- * *
Later that day, Uncle Vanya came in from the cherry orchard and cleaned up the gum.
The good news is that as a writer of fiction you get to create your world from scratch. The bad news is that because you create your world from scratch, everything in it is a conscious choice and the reader will assume that there is some reason behind these choices. Sloppiness in these matters can lead to any number of unintended consequences, foremost among them what is known by writers as the Gum on the Mantelpiece. This is an element introduced in the beginning of a novel that seems so significant that the reader can’t help but keep one eye on it, wondering when it will come into play. If it does not, your reader will feel unfairly dealt with. Remember: if there is gum on the mantelpiece in the first chapter, it must go on something by the last chapter.
For similar reasons, details that would go unremarked in real life -a quick glance across the room, the lyrics of the song that’s playing when you enter a bar - take on much greater significance in fiction. If you have to run dripping from the shower to sign for an unexpected package, it is probably the gardening clogs you forgot you ordered from Lands’ End. But if your character is interrupted in the shower by the arrival of an unexpected package, it tells your readers that the package will unleash a momentous chain of events.
A common version of this is:
The Deafening HugThe unintended love interest
- Anna put her arms around her brother and held him close. He could smell her faint perfume, and the warmth of her body made all his troubles drain away. She had filled out since going away to college, and the gentle, persistent, pressure of her breasts was distinct through her thin T-shirt. He let her go at last and said, with a slight blush, “Why can’t I talk to Amanda the way I talk to you?”
Anna laughed, but couldn’t meet his eyes. “I don’t know. Maybe ‘cause she’s beautiful?”
Hal choked on his response. To him, no one could ever be as beautiful as his little sister. If only she could see herself as others saw her! But he drove these ideas from his head. He had to concentrate on his troubles with Amanda, even if he was beginning to suspect he would have to look elsewhere for the real passion he was determined to find.
Sometimes the author is the last to know. It is all too easy to create a love interest where none is wanted. We call this the Deafening Hug for obvious reasons, and for reasons just as obvious, it should be avoided.
(Page ??)
The Red Herring on the Mantelpiece
A red herring is a well-planted false clue, sleight of hand that makes the reader watch one thing while you are busy doing another thing, a thing that will surprise and delight the reader when it is revealed at a time of your choosing. The inadvertently misleading element, “The Gum on the Mantelpiece”, can sometimes be turned into a red herring and made to work for you instead of against you. If your novel is feeling a bit thin because too little is going on, the addition of a decent red herring can lend it some substance and depth. By tying things together and creating a greater sense of interrelatedness, you can convert mantelpiece gum into incarnadine fish.
A classic red herring is the obvious suspect in a whodunit (the smirking gigolo with a hair-trigger temper, the perverse countess) who looks increasingly suspect - until the last scene, when the culprit turns out to be someone else entirely. An equally time-honored herring is the shallow Lothario the heroine is in love with for 200 pages, or so she thinks.
Always make sure that your red herring is an integral part of the story. When you perform sleight of hand, every movement should seem natural. So the murder suspect should be a character who is an established part of the world of the novel - typically it’s the lover, close relative, or longtime colleague of the detective or the cadaver. We will not feel the same pleasure in being misled if the suspect is just an unlucky stranger who trips over the still-warm corpse in the dark and, in falling, catches hold of the murder weapon, leaving a perfect set of fingerprints.
And when your red herring no longer serves a purpose, do not simply drop it, leaving a frustratingly loose thread. When the lover is rejected, we want to see his reaction. The heroine will also be thinking about his feelings, and a failure to address these points will erode the reader’s sense that the character is real.

But they had nothing better to do. Well, one thing - without anyone else to talk to, they were starting to get on each other's nerves.
"Got it, Mentally renaming you to 'The Guardian of Edible Property.'"
"STOP!" Apparently, Matt had screwed up. The guardian's face now showed a spectrum of emotions, including fear, horror, and anger. Chill was not included in the collection. Matt watched as the guardian's eyes focused in on one of her system screens that he couldn't see. He wasn't even sure if they existed in a proper sense, or if she was just programmed to look as if she was reading them. "Oh god, you were joking. Thank goodness. "Don't even think about it. The whole system runs off intent. Just… don't."
Matt took a shot at not thinking of new names for the guardian. It was harder than it looked.
"Um…"
"You renamed me, didn't you?"
"Maybe."
"Oh, dammit, Matt." The guardian called back up her screen, and looked at it for a moment. After a few seconds, she showed a whisper of a smile, closed the screen, and abruptly started walking again. "Come on now, we don't have all day."
"So… you don't hate it?" Matt asked.
The guardian was desperately trying to avoid eye contact and kept her voice steady. "I swear to you Matt. If you don't stop talking, I'm going to figure out how to achieve corporeality and beat you to death."
Even a guardian deserved dignity. Matt was trying to keep a straight face and was so, so close to making it.

I wondered if everyone aged by leveling or whether there was also a natural aging process that could be hastened by accumulation of XP at an early age. - Generica Online: Blasphemy Online: Dragons advance through stages evolution at certain levels? Not sure if I've got the system right.
- Fable I: Rapid Aging: Your character gets a little older every time you level up. This isn't to scale with anyone else, which lead to somewhat disconcerting scenes where you finally meet your long-lost sister who appears to be a young woman while you're a geezer. If you rank yourself enough, you'll look older than your mother when you finally see her!

Fairy Battle but just not moving, inanimate object type enemy. Like Crystals or Boxes in Three Fairies Hoppin Flappin Great Journey.
Also Our Monsters Are Mundane, for like Boxes or doors. There's a pixel-style game on itch.io where you copy skills from things like doors and coffee machines? Yes. https://adriendittrick.itch.io/universal-thief![]()
Our Monsters Are Inanimate / Mundane: like Three Fairies' Hoppin Flappin Great Journey's Cardboard Boxes and Copy Paper, or Sandstone's Rocks, etc. They're utterly inanimate but are treated like a monster?

There's a few Stationary Enemy that are Beef Gate + Pre-existing Encounters. Could be a subtrope.
Mutually Exclusive Achievements and Hard Achievements and stuff:
- ThatOneAchievement.Role Playing Games: The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky: The 3rd has Fierce Fighter and Flighty Fighter. The former requires you to have won at least 300 battles and never fled from a single battle. The latter requires you to run from at least 300 battles. As if those restrictions weren't bad enough, there are several more: you can only get ONE of these achievements per playthrough,
- Three Fairies Hoppin Flappin Great Journey:
- If you don't fight Nitori, you can't get Swamp King. Until you rematch post-endgame
- Cris Tales:
- Permanently Missable Content: Completing the side quest "Setting the Basses" removes all of the enemies from Neva Tulira's Salt Mines. There are a few enemies only found there, meaning if you hadn't scanned them, you'll never be able to do so again. This aspect also creates an odd dilemma in which the absence of Salt Mine enemies also means Kari Hudo can't get a sample of those enemies without intentionally failing to complete the side quest past where it can no longer be completed.
Mukokuseki: Facial Topography.
Idle Danger Checkpoint: Might be better names out there, but this is a Save Point / Checkpoint that you can't idle at when you load in. Preexisting enemies / Pre-existing Encounters would do it.
- Three Fairies Hoppin Flappin Great Journey has some at the Forest Crossroads being the earliest.

Multi-Drop, Random Drop but an enemy can drop more than one at a time: Bloodstained Ritual Of The Night.
Guaranteed Drop:
- Lost Ruins: Harpies always seem to drop Roasted Chicken?
- Shantae and the Seven Sirens: Pinchers seem to always drop Canned Tuna?
- Titan Quest: Phocian Swamps' Natural Cave's (Guaranteed?) Shadowmaw seems to always drop Lupine Claws or Demon Blood?
Thank you, Random Trope! Apology Gift - Sunset Overdrive - See Sex for Product's Gilt Trip entry.
Maybe also Dungeon Keeper Ami, the capture of Baron Leopold was intended as an apology?
Sugar Bowl? The replacement movie in The Maretian? Cassie's books when Gwen's sick in Princesses Of The Pizza Parlor? Get those checked. Toonstruck: Fluffy Fluffy Bun Bun Show, also Bunnies for Cuteness?
Copy Kitty: Endless Mode: Shield in a Gear Boss Battle is OP, just blocks the shield, easy.
WesternAnimation.MASK is linked from Creator.Kenner which should use Toys, and when that exists, we'll have a Franchise?
Note to Self: Shantae and the Seven Sirens: Check out what Hints are given in Beginner Mode. More dialogue, more tropes.
Shantae and the Seven Sirens: Shantae running then stopping at a ledge has her do a hands windmilling balancing animation to not fall off.
Shantae and the Seven Sirens: Something in We Interrupt This Index: After Squid Pit, Shantae's "I never knew I could transform like that" every time she gets a fusion coin, is interrupted by... "YOU'VE GOT SOME EXPLAINING TO DO!!!" from... Squid Baron!
Shantae and the Seven Sirens: The Sunken Shipyard Cave only marks as Complete when you get both the internal Squid and the one to a map spot to its right?
Shantae and the Seven Sirens: Seer Dance ground spots are Statues, if there's Tinkerbats digging it, or Stomps if there aren't? Or Tinkerbats disappear at the end game, so gotta use Seer.

Sunset Overdrive: You maybe can get Melee Weapon Badge EXP by breaking boxes with melee? But not gun EXP?
- The Brief and Meaningless Adventure of Hero Man: The ending from selling a Diamond Oozie for a fortune brings up how Hero Man wasn't promised a reward for saving the land from the demon lord:In a way, Hero Man questioned the altruistic nature of slaying a demon lord without the promise of payment or sustainability.
Saving the world for nothing more than the promise of appreciation and splendor...
No, perhaps such a life was not for him.
Perhaps under different circumstances, and perhaps outside of this wonderful fortune that had been bestowed upon him, would such a meager reward sate him.
But... none of that really mattered to Hero Man now.
With this much money, he figured the world was no longer of his concern and the problem would solve itself.
[Red Explosion]
And with no hero to defeat the demon lord, the world was soon engulfed in flames.
And yet Hero Man happily forfeit his life, having accomplished true nirvana even for such a brief amount of time.
The world needed neither the demon lord, nor the demon to empathy that Hero Man had become.
Also a bit of Only in It for the Money is applied after he gets the money, telling the Queen to shove it?
- ClueSweeper: Redundant Clues, like Murderer is Not a Gifted Musician, and Spouse has an Airtight Alibi, when Spouse is a Gifted Musician.
- Sunset Overdrive: "Rescue Bot" speech to the Survivors:Fizzco Rifle Bot: Breathe slowly and prepare to be rescued.

Survivor #1: What, really?
Survivor #4: Oh, thank goodness!
Survivor #5: Why aren't we running away?
Survivor #6: I don't totally trust this thing...
Fizzco Rifle Bot: Deception successful. Weapon systems online. - Sunset Overdrive: "Murdering" speech to the Survivors:Fizzco Rifle Bot: Please stand still for efficient murdering.

Symmetric Effect: Weapon of X-Slaying badges that make the Player take more damage from the same type of enemy they're being better at. Subverted by the badge gotten from all three enemy type badges. Unlike the merge for weapon and style badges, it's not basically a condense of the singles. But Damage Over Time for overall damage boost. Plus / Minus it's called. So you can get that in even if PM isn't a SE example.
Supply Drop by parachute trope: Sunset Overdrive: The parachuting-in purple chests that emit green smoke, as the Steam achievement says, it's a good question, since it contains money and OverCharge, but who and why? These aren't good for humans, etc. Fizzco weirdo automated geocaching??
Achievement: Who is Sending These?Loot 25 emergency supply drops
Seems to be coming from planes that can be shot down with the DSRC...
Sunset Overdrive'': Player points at Weapon Ring in Xbox, and weapon bar at top on PC, to counter Buck National's Assault Rifle threat.

Also, the Nano-shooter gun's projectiles can't actually do anything useful. Can't break Security Cameras with it, nor Ammo Boxes, etc.

List of Alliterations draft
When making a list, having its entries alliterate gives the items some distinctiveness, and like other Added Alliterative Appeal Sub-Tropes, it may also be done for humor. An example would be: "baking bread, sizzling steaks, and cooking cabanara".
Alliterative List is for when the items in a list alliterate with each other, like "sleeping, slumbering, and snoring", and cannot overlap with this trope when talking about the same list items. If it does, then it's Alliterative List.
Lastly, there's some overlap with most references to the lines of "Double, double, toil and trouble" from Macbeth.
Examples
- A Halloween-themed commercial for Empire Carpets spoofs the Weird Sisters' incantation from Macbeth. A witch stirs her cauldron, saying, "Boil, boil, toil and trouble/Time to call Empire on the double!"
- Monty Python's Contractual Obligation Album: Invoked in "Bells"Husband: The principle's the same. Bleedin' C. of E.! The Mohammedans don't come 'round here wavin' bells at us! We don't get Buddhists playing bagpipes in our bathroom! Or Hindus harmonizing in the hall! The Shintoists don't come here shattering sheet glass in the shithouse, and shouting slogans-Wife: All right, don't practice your alliteration on me.
- Magic: The Gathering: Pitchburn Devils
Flavor Text:The ingenuity of goblins, the depravity of demons, and the smarts of sheep. - Yu-Gi-Oh!: Multiple cards, in "[Formal Name, Title]" style:
- Piet Pienter en Bert Bibber: Name and Name title. "En" = "And"

- Elementals of Harmony: From Elementals Of Harmony: "First In, Last Out"
: Laughter Elemental's Flavor Text, on Laughter:Laughter can be many things. - My Little Mages: The Nightmare's Return: "Worst Reunion Ever"

With people of culture? Why do they always talk about my mob associations?" And then he said, "Oh, by the way, Alan, say hello to Willie the Nose, Hymie the Hook, Nick the Knife?"
