     Popular Athletes (35)

  • A Codette World Tour: Lovable Jock: As always, but his heroic nature truly shines during the Africa challenge when he saves Cody from Sierra and then both Bridgette and Cody from falling off a cliff. Character is popular in canon, which I'm assuming carries over into the fanfic.

  • A Nightmare on Elm Street: Lovable Jock: Dan is a popular sports jock whom Alice crushes on, is an all-around nice guy who avoids the mean behavior. The entry outright says he's popular.

  • A Separate Peace: Lovable Jock: Both the best athlete at Devon and one of the friendliest boys there. '''Character is both a friendly jock and popular at his school.

  • American Horror Story: Coven: Lovable Jock: He's the only member of the fraternity who's a decent human being. Character is the leader of their local fraternity, so it stands to reason they are somewhat popular.

  • Big Man on Campus States the the two tropes are related. Also, there are many examples of Lovable Jock being this trope as well.

  • Brainless Beauty: See also: Popular Is Dumb. It is a reasonably good rule of thumb that most cheerleaders will be presented as being Brainless Beauties unless the movie or show is actually focused on them. The same applies to jocks especially the nicer ones. Suggests that being popular is a requirement to be a Lovable Jock.

  • Total Drama: Tyler was the butt of many Trent/Lindsay jokes during the early years of the fandom when he was largely an ignored character. However, this started to die out around World Tour when Lindsay finally started remembering who Tyler was, allowing him and his relationship with Lindsay to get some more development, with the pair showing themselves to be the most stable pairing in the whole series. Character is popular in canon.

  • Western Animation: Total Drama has a great deal of this. Thanks to its substantial fanbase of Crack Shippers and numerous Ensemble Darkhorses, any random pairing could be thrown in beside any other ship. Some of the more notable cases:
    • Before Gwen/Trent broke up, Gwen/Cody fans sometimes put Trent together with Lindsay. The pairing developed its own independent fandom that's probably as large or larger than Gwen/Cody, partly because fans seemed to have little interest in Lindsay's canonical pairing with Tyler at the time. Tyler, who in canon is popular, is described as a Lovable Jock.

  • Community: A disgraced lawyer, a Soapbox Sadie, a Lovable Jock, a divorced housewife, a Cute Bookworm, an autistic savant, and a Dirty Old Man attend community college together. Hilarity Ensues. The character described as a Lovable Jock, Troy, was popular in high school.

  • Two Worlds: Lovable Jock: Chris becomes a football player in the second season, but he still stayed friends with Max and others.

    • Josh is a very nice and friendly person.

    • Max and Chris too. The first example fits this trope, describing a character who stays friends with their less popular peers even after they become popular. The other two are zero-context.

  • Slam Dunk: Lovable Jock: Is actually a Nice Guy despite having the looks and the sports skills that would make him the perfect Jerk Jock. Character is described as the star player elsewhere on the character page, suggesting they have some degree of popularity.

  • Sudden Sequel Heel Syndrome: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix has Harry returning to the Weasley family only to find out that Percy has fallen out with everyone and sided with the Ministry of Magic ahead of the upcoming war.

  • The Catcher in the Rye: Big Man on Campus: Stradlater, who straddles the line between Jerk Jock and Lovable Jock. Although he beats up Holden (in fact, while straddling him), he only does so after Holden already attacked him, and while he does seem to be a cocky flirt, he also seems to be a pretty good guy who genuinely likes spending time with Holden. On the other hand, he's implied to be highly promiscuous, having casual sex with women whose names he can't even bother to remember... sometimes pressuring them into doing things they don't want to do, leaving him somewhere two steps shy of date-rape. Holden, in fact, only attacks him after remembering how he treats his dates, realizing his date that night is someone Holden cares for. Since the character is a Big Man on Campus, they are popular, meaning this example belongs here.

  • The Goldbergs: * Jerk Jock: Barry attempts to be one when he becomes a jock, but the actual head jock is more of a Lovable Jock and Big Man on Campus who helps Adam up after Barry pulls the Jerk Jock routine on him, and chastises him. Since the character is a Big Man on Campus, they are popular and belong in this section.

  • Redheads Are Uncool: The Art of Starving: Matt is a redhead who's bullied for being gay and whose Only Friend has moved away before the story started. Through the novel, he becomes more popular thanks to his new-found powers and his relationship with the school's soccer star Tariq. The Lovable Jock character is described as popular.

  • The Blob (1988): Lovable Jock: He's not your typical football player stereotype, making his gruesome death especially horrifying. Character is described as popular and well liked elsewhere on their character profile.

  • Deconstructed Character Archetype: Mitch is your standard popular Dumb Jock, but his popularity seems to come in part from being actually a nice person. And rarely for the trope, he expresses fear and distrust of socially outcast groups, despite being a member of one such group himself, showing that even members of socially discriminated groups can still be fearful and prejudiced against other groups. Character is described as popular in the entry.

  • Normal People: * Lovable Jock: Connell is one of the few decent athletic boys at the school. Character is described as popular elsewhere on the page.

  • Veronica Mars: Lovable Jock: A Nice Guy who's also one of the star players on the basketball team. Character does become popular once they join the basketball team, so they belong here.

  • Western Animation: Larry can either be a Lovable Jock who is everybody's friend or a borderline Jerk Jock depending on the episode. Like with Pearl, his relation to SpongeBob can vary as well, from being a bonefide member of SpongeBob's circle of friends to flat-out not knowing or caring who SpongeBob is. Character appears to be a celebrity in-universe.

  • Live-Action TV: And then there's Luke. He started out as a complete Jerkass, and eventually became a pretty good friend to the main cast. He genuinely evolves from a Jerk Jock to a Lovable Jock. Character is described as popular on the series's trope page, so it fits here.

  • Glee The character Finn Hudson is described as a Lovable Jock by the page. Since he is popular in-universe, the example fits here.

  • Tropes J to P: Lovable Jock: In "Gronkowsbees," Rob Gronkowski starts as this, before turning into a real jerk. Since the character is both a real world celebrity and was portrayed as popular in said episode, this example fits here.

  • Our Miss Brooks: Lovable Jock: Stretch Snodgrass, Madison High's star athlete. He's dimwitted, but good natured to the point where he's willing to transfer schools if it'll get his best friend Walter Denton on the Madison football team ("Two Way Stretch Snodgrass). Stretch is apparently very popular, when he accidentally vandalizes the school in "Stuffed Gopher", Miss Brooks and Walter gets a crew of students to fix the damage and cover for him. Character is described as popular, so the example fits here.

  • Big Time Rush: Lovable Jock: They were on the hockey team back in Minnesota. Since these characters are all part of a popular Boy Band, this example belongs here.

  • Characters/Christine: Lovable Jock: Although Dennis is far from perfect, he's generally a nice guy who's a friend and protector to Arnie. Character is popular in the movie, so the example fits here.

  • Live-Action TV: Saved by the Bell:
    • Out of the guys, Screech is nice (a quirky but well-meaning nerd), Zack is mean (a charming but manipulative schemer), and Slater is in-between (a bit of a hothead but ultimately a Lovable Jock). Character described as a Lovable Jock was popular in-universe, so the example fits here.

  • {Determinator/Western Animation: Tyler. He never gives up trying to prove himself as the king of all sports, no matter how many times he fails at his athletic stunts. Character is popular in their series, so the example fits here.

  • Crazy Ex-Girlfriend The character described as a Lovable Jock, Josh Chan, is mentioned to have been popular in High School, the the example fits here.

  • Riverdale The character described as a Lovable Jock, Archie Andrews, is popular in-universe so the example fits here.

  • Western Animation/Paranorman: Lovable Jock: Mitch is not particularly bright, but he's not mean to anybody. Character is described as popular in the character page, so this examples fits here.

  • The Golden Week: Lovable Jock: Matthew is a star football/soccer player who is chill to everyone. The example describes the character as being popular, so it fits here.

  • Endless Summer The character described as a Lovable Jock, Sean, is popular in-universe so the example belongs here.

  • Paranorman: Lovable Jock: Mitch is not particularly bright, but he's not mean to anybody. Character is described as popular in the character page, so this examples fits here.

  • Diplomatic Immunity: Lovable Jock: The Niu, a kind and friendly surfer. This character is described as popular, at least with women, so it belongs here.

     Kind Athletes (7)

  • A3! Winter: He is good at sports and is friendly to others, although may come off as a bit of a jerk. Notably, he's familiar with Taichi and even asks how he's doing after the two of them meet following Tasuku quitting the God Troupe, despite Taichi having only served as an ensemble cast member for the God Troupe.
    • Before he leaves God Troupe, he always tells Haruto to stop whenever Haruto gets condescending towards Mankai Company. It's noted elsewhere on the character page that this character is social awkward and not popular.

  • Harry Potter – Harry James Potter: Lovable Jock: Harry has been the Seeker for Gryffindor's Quidditch team since his first year. And since that time, he has remained a Nice Guy. Harry's popularity varies from book to book. He's considered a celebrity in the wizard world, but he spends many books being the social outcast.

  • The Crown (2016): The British Royal Family: Lovable Jock: He's a rugby star at school and a sweet little boy who adores his parents. The show doesn't really go much into William's life at school so it's unclear if he is popular or not.

  • Star vs. the Forces of Evil: Marco Diaz: Lovable Jock: Marco is a karate practitioner and an all around Nice Guy. Character is described as unpopular elsewhere on their character page.

  • Tropes I to P: Lovable Jock: Harry, technically, though he's not Seeker thanks to a lack of Quidditch (and was planning to quit the team anyway, on the grounds that his reflexive telekinesis means that he'd have a rather unfair advantage...), but as a very reluctant Triwizard Champion, he still qualifies on the 'jock' part. The 'lovable' part varies. In canon Harry's popularity varies from book to book. There are plenty of times when he's a social outcast.

  • Pack Street: Pack Street: Lovable Jock: Cliff and Neil, a tiger and lion duo that Remmy befriends at the gym. Since the characters are adults, they don't really fit into the stereotype of high school jocks.

  • Live-Action TV: Ethan James from Power Rangers: Dino Thunder. There's also one Dr. Thomas "Tommy" Oliver, science teacher, paleontologist and the whole franchise's Ace. The Badass Bookworming of Tommy was even lampshaded in an episode of Power Rangers Operation Overdrive, where a former teammate of Tommy's even remarked that he found it hard to believe that Tommy became a Badass Bookworm. The series even parodied the trope in an episode of Dino Thunder, where Lovable Jock Conner McKnight temporally became a Badass Bookworm thanks to a meteorite which changed the three Rangers' personalities (Cute Bruiser Kira became a dainty girly-girl and video game nerd Ethan became a Jerk Jock). The character described as a Lovable Jock doesn't seem any more or less popular than his peers on the show.
