Weapon: Claymore
Field Skill: Aristocratic Inspection (10% chance to craft Character Talent Materials twice).

The Spindrift Knight and the Captain of the Knights of Favonius Reconnaissance Company. A descendant of Mondstadt's old aristocracy, it is an enigma as to why a scion of an outdated system would serve as a loyal and dedicated member to the Knights.

  • Meaningful Name: The character used for "Eu"/you means "excellent" in Chinese and Japanese.

    Kate
Rarity:
Element: Electro
Weapon: Sword

Liyue

    Yaoyao
Rarity: 4★

    Yunjin
Rarity: 4★
Element: Geo
Weapon: Polearm

A famed performer and brewer at the Heyu Tea House.

  • Blue Oni, Red Oni: The blue oni to Xinyan's red oni.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: She was first mentioned in the voicelines and stories of Keqing, Xingqiu, Zhongli, and Xinyan before properly appearing in the game.
  • Elegant Gothic Lolita: Her clothing is evocative of lolita fashion, though obviously more inspired by historical Chinese fashion.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • The Chinese characters for yun and jin mean "cloud" and "pansy/viola", respectively, hence Yunjin's fluffy and flowerly clothing as well as her white and purple color scheme.
    • Yun can also mean "say", and "pansy" is derived from the French word pensée, meaning "to think", so Yunjin's name could be taken as a Stealth Pun for saying and thinking.
  • Not So Above It All: In-universe. Xinyan was surprised that someone as poised and stoic as the famed opera singer Yunjin would not only be accepting of her rock-'n-roll, but also a fan of it.

Field Skill: Encyclopedic Expertise (displays location of Liyue-exclusive resources on the minimap)

A well-known legal adviser in Liyue Harbor. She is half-Adeptus (specifically, a xiezhi) and half-human.

  • Half-Human Hybrid: Like Ganyu, she is half-Adeptus, half-human. Her Adeptus side is a xiezhi, a beast representing law and justice in Chinese mythology.
  • Meaningful Name: The Chinese characters for yan and fei mean "smoke" and "scarlet/dark red", respectively, reflecting that she is a Pyro user. Her clothes also depict red smoke.

Inazuma

    In General
  • Wind Is Green: Interestingly, Inazuma's only currently known Anemo users, Kazuha and Sayu, wear orange and yellow instead of green, averting this trope. This seems to be referencing autumn colors, perhaps because Mondstadt (and to a lesser extent, Liyue) is known for its vast greenery and grass fields.
  • Fantasy Counterpart Culture: To Heian-era Japan.

A ronin from Inazuma, who follows the paths that the winds take him. That current path means being with Beidou's Crux Fleet.

    • In Japanese, kazu means "peace, harmony", and ha means "leaf", hence his autumn motif.
    • Kiryu means "atmospheric/air current", befitting of an Anemo user.
  • Red Baron: His ronin name is Kaedehara Kazuha, kaedehara meaning "field of maple trees".

Stories of Teyvat

Tales of Teyvat

Stories that circulate the land, told as fairytales, fictional accounts, or truth shrouded in myth.

    Gnostic Chorus
Once, a glorious kingdom floated in the heavens. One day, one of its crowned heirs was tasked with seeking out the Genesis Pearl from the Kingdom of Darkness below. However, she was deceived, lost her memory, and was tricked into believing she ruled the Darkness. Fret not, however, as the second crowned heir was then tasked with succeeding where she failed.

This story is told in a cutscene narrated by Venti, activated upon opening the Battle Pass page after the beginning of each period.

  • Ambiguous Gender: The second crowned heir appears androgynous and isn't referred to by any pronouns.
  • Ambiguous Situation:
    • At the end of the cutscene, Venti will say that this story is your journey.
    • What did the heavenly kingdom want with the Genesis Pearl?
    • Why did the heavenly kingdom send its crowned heirs to retrieve the Genesis Pearl?
    • How was the first crowned heir deceived?
    • Genesis Crystals are one of the game's special currencies. According to its flavor text, they were created from the origin of the universe and a single one has enough energy to create a newborn star. It can be assumed the Genesis Pearl has a connection to the Genesis Crystals.
  • Fallen Hero: While on her journey for the Genesis Pearl, the first crowned heir was deceived, made amnesiac, and was tricked into believing she was the Queen of the Kingdom of Darkness.
  • Meaningful Name: Genesis is the first book in the Bible, telling the story of how the universe came to be.
  • No Name Given: Neither kingdoms are named. The heirs' kingdom is only referred to as "a glorious kingdom among the heavens", and the first crowned heir is taken by "the Kingdom of Darkness".

    Blessing of the Welkin Moon
A ritual prayer performed on the rise of the first new moon in hopes of receiving the moon's blessing of wealth and good fortune.

This is one of the game's subscription offers.

The Three Moon Sisters and the Seelie

The Pale Princess and the Six Pygmies

The story is a well-known Teyvat fairytale compiled into a series of books. The first volume of the book is rewarded to the player by Lisa upon completing the first Act of her Character Quest, though the rest of the books are currently unobtainable.

  • Ambiguous Situation: According to the Abyss Mage who stole the book in Lisa's Character Quest, the story contains "a secret" in it, which is why he stole it.
  • Big Bad: The Night Mother, the source of all sins, rules over the Land of Night, where no life thrives and monsters flourish in her evil.
  • But Thou Must!: Act I of Lisa's Character Quest is required to progress the main story, so Volume I of The Pale Princess and the Six Pygmies is one of the few books you'll be forced to obtain as it is the quest reward.
  • Shrouded in Myth: If the Abyss Mage in Lisa's Character Quest is to be believed, there is some truth to this fairytale.

    Vera's Melancholy
A series of novels that can be found in Mondstadt's Library and throughout Mondstadt City.
  • Ambiguous Situation:
    • The story makes references to the Andromeda Galaxy, the Orion Arm, and the Large Magellanic Cloud, structures that we're not sure exist in the universe of Genshin Impact.
    • Vera wonders if maybe in other world, a war is being fought by fourteen Valkyries. This may be a Honkai Impact 3rd connection, though Sachi cuts her off and asks her if she's been reading too many books.
  • Artistic License – Physics: According to Ike, "re-igniting a sun is not difficult".
  • The Empire: The Andromeda Empire.
  • Classical Mythology: Three places in the story that are referenced are the Andromeda Galaxy, the Orion Arm, and Vera's village Delphi. In myth, Orion saved Andromeda, and Delphi is a city fabled to have been home to the Oracle of Delphi.
  • Islam: One of the locations in space that gets mentioned is the Eternal Jahanam, named for the Islamic equivalent of hell.

    The Boar Princess

A series of children's novels.

    Legend of the Lone Sword
In a world without elemental energy or alchemy, a tale unfolds of love and hate between friends and foes.

A popular martial arts novel in Liyue, telling the story of Jin the 72nd as he seeks out revenge against the Nameless Swordsman who ruthlessly cut down his mentor and classmates at his martial arts school.

  • Meaningful Rename: Jin was the last of the 72 members of his school, so he renamed himself Jin the 72nd in honor of his fallen comrades.
  • Revenge: The story tells of Jin the 72nd seeking out revenge against the Nameless Swordsman who challenged him and killed his entire school.
  • Rule of Three
  • Sole Survivor: Jin was the only survivor of the Nameless Swordsman's attack on his martial arts school.

    A Legend of Sword

A series of novels written by Xingqiu under his pen name Zhenyu, with Albedo contributing as the illustrator of the cover art. They can be purchased at Inazuma's Yae Publishing House, with a copy of the final volume being located in the Yashiro Commission.

    The Saga of Hamawaran
A collection of stories revolving around Hamawaran, a samurai from Sumeru, from a time before the Sakoku Decree when travel was allowed in and out of Inazuma.

A series of light novels written by Priscina, based off an existing series that faded into obscurity in the height of the Raiden Shogun's rule. The first three volumes are available for purchase at the Yae Publishing House.

  • Badass Bookworm: Not only is Hamawaran a samurai from another land, but he's also studying marine biology for an academic thesis back in Sumeru.
  • Cultural Translation: Hamawaran finds out from the shikigami that Inazuma's "ghost-calling" is similar to Sumeru's "spirit-warding". For one, both involve signing a pact with one's real name, and the mystical importance of knowing someone's real name is a common cultural idea.
  • Cute Ghost Girl: Hamawaran encounters a young ghost girl claiming to be a shikigami.
  • A Degree in Useless: Hamawaran studied marine biology and has to do a thesis on it, and upon meeting a ghost girl claiming to be a shikigami, he comically laments that he should've gone into mysticism.
  • Executive Meddling: In-universe. Due to "business model adjustments", the preface became the first volume.
  • Meaningful Name: Hamawaran is an obscure ancient location in Iran, said to have been ruled by a Shah.
  • Padding: In-universe. The entire foreword had to be compiled as the first volume.
  • Reboot: Implied. The foreword states that the adventures of Hamawaran have been told before until Raiden's rule somehow caused his stories to lose popularity, though the series has been revived by a new author. It's unclear however if Priscina's The Saga of Hamawaran is a reboot or a continuation.

Figures in Teyvat's Stories

Mondstadt

    Amos

Decarabian's former lover, who upon realizing her love was not reciprocated, joined the rebellion against him and the aristocracy.

Liyue

Inazuma

    Takamine the Mistsplitter
A famous martial artist who was a master in the arts of swordsmanship and archery. He wielded the sword Mistsplitter's Reflection and the bow Thundering Pulse.
  • I Have Many Names: Like some Japanese historical figures, Takamine took on at least one other name in his life; Konbumaru was his nickname given by the Tengu.

    Asase Kanade
A famous shrine maiden who sided with the Seirai against the Shogunate. She wielded the Hamayumi/Demon-Slayer Bow.
  • Meaningful Name: Asase can mean sea shoal or shallows.
  • Star-Crossed Lovers: Flavor text for the Hamayumi bow and Mistsplitter's Reflection describe how Asase and Takamine served on opposing sides, with Asase helping the Seirai against the Shogun despite Takamine serving the Shogun in her campaigns. Downplayed in that Takamine was deployed to "the abyss", a "disaster that swept in from the distant sea", rather than the Seirai uprising, so the two weren't close to facing each other in combat.
  • Teacher/Student Romance: Takamine taught her archery.
  • Tragic Keepsake: Before leaving for his years-long campaign with the Shogun, Takamine made a bet with Asase that he would leave his prized bow, the Thundering Pulse, with her until he returned. Otherwise, he would allow her to keep it and use it. Asase won.

    The Yougou Tengu

The Tengu at Mt. Yougou, who trained Takamine the Mistsplitter in archery.

  • The Mentor: After Takamine lost his bet with her, he was forced to become the Tengu's servant for a number of years and was taught archery and swordsmanship skills from her.

    Ako Domeki
An Inazuman ship captain from Seirai Island who stole a Maguu Kenki and fled the region on boat. Her boat crashed in the Golden Apple Archipelago, where the Maguu Kenki can still be found.
  • Meaningful Name: A literal translation of 赤穗百目鬼 is "red-tipped hundred-eyed demon".
  • Japanese Mythology: She is called a todomeki (shortened to domeki for Ako Domeki due to Japanese language quirks), a hundred-eyed oni/demon known for causing trouble. There are at least two major folktales that prominently focus on the todomeki:
    • One popular folktale says that the todomeki disguises itself as a young girl to beg for coins from people, only to then reveal her true appearance to startle them and steal the rest of their money.
    • Another story tells of a todomeki terrorizing a village until she was slain by the regional shogun. Four centuries later, a saintly Buddhist woman was revealed to be the todomeki in disguise, biding her time until she could recover her power and cause trouble once again, only for her temple's holy man to see right through her and defeat her in combat. After he spoke to her the words of Dharma, she realized the error of her ways and begged for sutras to be read for her, never to terrorize humanity again,
  • Red Baron: According to the flavor text for the Hamayumi bow, Ako Domeki is the nickname they got after becoming infamous for stealing.

    Zaemon
A leader in the Seirai uprising against the Shogunate.

    The Kitsune Saiguu
Also known as the Hakushin Kitsune. A close friend of the Shogun, she was a forest-dwelling kitsune, worshipped by the people of Inazuma as a kitsune goddess before she mysteriously disappeared from Inazuma.

  • All There in the Manual: The Hakushin Ring is an ancient catalyst that carries the memories of the Kitsune Saiguu. The Retracting Bolide artifact set tells of a series of meetings that the Kitsune Saiguu had with various attendees on the night of a summer festival.
  • Ambiguous Situation:
    • It is stated in various flavor texts that she mysteriously disappeared. The Summer Night's Mask can only speculate that she disappeared because of the Shogun's suppression of Inazuma's spirits, who fled deep into the forest as a result of her reign.
    • Her name or title, Saiguu, is named for the residence of the saiou, suggesting that "Saiguu" is a position in Inazuma. However, Yae Miko's personal name is Miko rather than one of her priestess titles being "miko", and the characters for "saiguu"/"saikuu" can be used in Japanese names.
  • Apocalyptic Log: The Hakushin Ring catalyst, the blueprints of which you are given from Kazari's mask, contains the Kitsune Saiguu's final memory. In it, she looks back on her life and notes that she "lived it to the full" before ending it pleading with "the dark will that gnaws at [her]" to return her memories (the catalyst) to her homeland so that she can in a way continue hoping for Inazuma's beauty to endure the rampage of the "dark".
  • Break His Heart to Save Him: She tricked Iori by sending him away so that he wouldn't have to be around when she disappeared.
  • Cool Mask: Flavor text for the Hakushin Ring state that she wears a mask, and the Summer Night's Mask from the Retracting Bolide artifact set was one of them. She notes this is appropriate for her after meeting Chiyo, whose beauty is considered unrivaled and thus she humbly feels she must hide her face for not being as eye-pleasing.
  • Double Meaning: The character for sai, 斎, has multiple meanings, most if not all relating to religious terms about purity, spirituality, and sacredness. However, it is also an extension of 時 (toki), meaning "time", befitting her nature as the reincarnating kitsune and her friendship with the Immortal Shogun.
  • Friend to All Children: As recalled in the Hakushin Ring and the Summer Night's Mask, she helped a lost child who was separated from their family at a summer festival.
  • Japanese Mythology: Like Yae, she is based on the kitsune.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • "Haku" means "white", and she has white hair.
    • The 斎宮, or Saikuu/Saiguu, was the residence of the current serving Saiou. In ancient times, a saiou was an unmarried female member of the Japanese Imperial Family (usually a daughter; if not, then the closest related member to the Emperor) that was sent to the Grand Shrine in Ise — one of the largest Shinto shrines in the country — to serve as the High Priestess until her Emperor died or abdicated the throne, never to return to the capital Kyoto until then. She was also expected to avoid 穢れ (kegare), or filth.
  • Mystical White Hair: Raiden Shogun's short shows that she had white hair.
  • Odd Name Out: Despite being said to be worshipped as a goddess in Inazuma, none of her known names refer to a demon in the Ars Goetia like the other gods. It's possible either the people of Inazuma merely mistook her as a goddess or we don't know her other names yet.
  • Spell My Name With An S: 斎宮 is usually romanized as Saikuu rather than "Saiguu" due to rendaku, though Saiguu is still a valid spelling.
  • Troll: The Hakushin Ring flavor text reads that she "shamelessly schemed" against the Shogun as a friendly joke, such as getting her to put the troublemaking bake-danuki Iori under her command.

    Mikoshi Chiyo
A beautiful oni maiden from the Mikoshi clan. She had befriended the Shogun over their shared views of Eternity, but after being corrupted during the war with the Abyss, she later betrayed her and was believed to have been killed.
  • Amazonian Beauty: Both the Shogun and Kitsune Saiguu note she was as a beautiful as the moon and a graceful dancer while also being a mighty sword fighter.
  • We Used to Be Friends: In the Narukami's Affection catalyst, the Shogun lists her between the Bake-Danuki (an annoying enemy) and the Yougou Tengu (a reliable friend), and notes that the Shogun and the Oni Maiden eventually fought.

    Bake-Danuki
A mischievous monster tanuki that enjoyed pestering the Shogun.

    Iwakura Doukei

Born as Mikoshi Doukei, he was the son of Mikoshi Chiyo and the heir to the Mikoshi clan. After her passing and the dishonor brought upon the clan, Doukei lost his claim to the family fortune and lived in isolation until he was taken under the wing of Teruyo of Yougou. Renamed by her to Iwakura Doukei, he became an expert swordsmaster and teacher for the Kujou clan and Kanjou Commission.

The Emblem of Severed Fate artifact set tells the story of how Doukei became a famed swordsman.

Others

    The Virisdescent Venerer

    The Thunderbird

Its story is told in the Thundering Fury artifact set and the Thundersoother artifact set.

  • Ambiguous Situation:
    • The Beast of Thunder in the Thundersoother artifact set may be the Thunderbird, as both the Thundering Fury and Thundersoother artifact sets are exclusive to the Midsummer Courtyard domain.
    • The Thunderbird seems to be based on the Thunderbird in indigenous North American mythology and the tribe that committed Human Sacrifice in its name is common in pop-culture depictions of Mesoamerican civilizations, not to mention that the game's Thunderbird is associated with both thunder and fire (particularly volcanoes), suggesting a connection with Natlan, the region that worships the Pyro Archon, also known as the god of war. However, both the Thundering Fury set and the Thundersoother set are found exclusively in the Midsummer Court domain in Mondstadt, which states that it was home to an ancient, lost civilization, possibly the decimated tribe described in the Thundering Fury artifacts. On the other hand, no other Mondstadt-related lore makes mention of any Thunderbird, tribes, or volcano.
  • Appease the Volcano God: Inverted.
  • Humans Are Bastards: It never cared for the human sacrifices made for it, but drew a line in the sand when the boy that sung to him was sacrificed. The Thundersoother set indicates that its reign of terror on humanity continued, presumably because of that incident.
  • Gameplay and Story Integration:
    • The Thundering Fury set describes the Thunderbird unleashing its powers of electricity and fire, and rather appropriately, the set's artifacts boost elemental combinations that include Electro.
    • Likewise, the Midsummer's Courtyard recommends using Pyro characters. Interestingly, the Ley Line Disorders can help or detriment the player whenever a Pyro elemental combination happens, either by causing an energy blast immediately afterwards that knocks back opponents or the player, also as a reference to the Thunderbird's usage of both electricity and fire.
  • Human Sacrifice:
  • Native American Mythology: In various indigenous North American cultures, the Thunderbird is a god in the form of a bird and was said the possess the power of thunder and lightning.
  • Posthumous Character: Survivor of Catastrophe, the feather artifact in the Thundering Fury set, states that after destroying the tribe, the Thunderbird became seen as a monster and was slain years later.
  • Red Baron: In the Thundersoother set, he is called the Beast of Thunder.
  • Revenge: As told in the Thundering Fury artifact set, it destroyed tribe that sacrificed the boy he had befriended.

    The Thundersoother
His story is told in the Thundersoother set.
  • Animal Motif: The Thundersoother's Plume was styled after the falcon, seen by the Thundersoother as a bird that braved the fury of thunderstorms and volcanic eruptions.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: His family was sacrificed to the Thunderbird, leading his down his path of revenge against the beast.
  • Gameplay and Story Integration: The Thundersoother set increases defense and damage against Electro enemies.
  • Revenge: Part of his quest to slay the Beast of Thunder was because his family were human sacrifices made in its name.
  • Vengeance Feels Empty: Thundersoother's Goblet and Diadem says that even after avenging his sacrificed family and being seen as a hero by finally killing the Beast of Thunder, he lived the rest of his days in solitude and drowning his sorrows, believing that there truly was nothing that could pacify the pain of his past.
