Sand Box / The Rutabegas Take On Les Mis

Go To

  • A Child Shall Lead Them: Gavroche is the leader of Les Amis D'ABC, instead of Enjolras. For...reasons.
  • Adaptational Heroism: Subverted. At first it seems like Javert is going to listen to Fantine about her daughter's kidnapping...but then she mentions that her daughter's name is Conan Jr...and then he starts flipping out at her.
  • Adaptational Villainy: In the show proper, the unnamed guards were pretty awful people, abusing prisoners, but here they're outright beating prisoners up for not singing well enough, and then slander Jean Valjean's singing ability so when he gets out of prison, he's even more of an outcast then he would have been.
    • Javert (Or 'Rachel') goes from simply handing Jean Valjean to his ticket of leave, to threatening to beat up anyone who so much as hits on his beloved 'Conan'. His obsession to the law is put on the backburner, and treats Fantine badly because her daughter shares the name of his crush.
    • While Thenardier is a horrible scumbag of a person who probably would kidnap a little girl if he thought it would benefit him, it is not how he acquired Cosette from Fantine.
  • Adaptational Name Change:
    • Javert -> Rachel
    • Jean Valjean -> Conan
    • Cosette -> Conan Jr.
    • Enjolras -> Angela
    • Marius -> Mary
Adapted Out: Eponine and Mme. Thenardier. The former's name is just an alias for Cosette so Thenardier can pretend to be treating her well when people are watching, but then treats her as a drudge when there's nobody there. Mme. Thenardier's role in the story is given to one of the Singing Police.
  • Alliterative Name: Rudy Rutabega.
  • Artistic License: Javert is referred to as 'tsundere' multiple times throughout, but threatening to beat up anyone who hits on Valjean is closer to Yandere behavior.
  • Ascended Extra: The prison guards/Constables, who, in the musical only appear in the first too songs as background characters and then disappear, become the Singing Police, who hound various characters for not getting their singing licenses.
  • Author Tract: The introduction of Javert is cut off by the author going on a completely unrelated rant about tsunderes, and how Javert apparently is one. When she gets back on track, she's forgotten the names of Javert and Jean Valjean.
  • Brown Note: Subverted. "555555555" is built up to be a terrible, terrible singer, so much so it's implied that his lack of singing skills played into his sentance...but then when he opens his mouth, he sings perfectly well. It turns out that only the guards think he's a bad singer, and everyone else plays along because they're afraid of them.
  • Character Derailment: Let's see...Fantine is an otaku who names her daughter after a manga she likes, Javert becomes a violent tsundere who is in love with Jean Valjean...Jean Valjean is mostly the same, but he is a bit less patient then in the book, especially with Thenardier.
  • Composite Character: Since Gavroche becomes Les Amis's leader, and Enjolras is Demoted to Extra, it basically means Gavroche keeps all his parts and takes over for Enjolras.
    • In this version, Eponine doesn't exist, she's just a fake name for Cosette to hide that the Thenardiers actually kidnapped her.
  • Informed Flaw: In universe, the prisoners and guards all treat Valjean's singing as awful, but then when he actually sings...
    Rudy: Surprise! 55555555555’s singing actually doesn’t sound bad at all!
    Audience: Thank goodness!
    Guards: What are you talking about?! MAKE IT STOP!
  • Felony Misdemeanor: Jean Valjean is shunned by the other prisoners, the guards, for his constant escape attempts, stealing bread, and them not liking his singing.
  • Gender-Blender Name: Early on, Javert is dubbed 'Rachel' after Rudy forgets his actual name. Later, Cosette is entitled 'Conan Jr.'
  • It Amused Me: Thenardier, after duping the 'Singing Police' into thinking that he's licensed, randomly points out Jean Valjean as not having his license.
    Valjean: Bruised with marshamallows rubbed into his hair You psycho! What on earth was that for?
    Thenardier: You see, mon ami, even though there was no chance of monetary gain, and the singing police had already let me off the hook, I still thought the ensuing scuffle might be totally hilarious. And it was. So thanks for the entertainment. Ta-Ta! (Runs off)
  • Hey, Wait!: It turns out the constables who arrest Valjean didn't realize he'd stolen silver-they'd overheard his singing, and were taking him to the bishop so he could be exorcised. Then they find out about the silver.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: At the end, Javert/'Rachel' realizes that everybody (himself included) are not acting as they should, and commits suicide as a result.
  • Shipper on Deck: Played with. Rudy clearly sees sexual tension between "Rachel" and "Conan" but she doesn't seem to want them to get together.
  • Through the Eyes of Madness: The whole story is told through Rudy Rutabega's perspective. She...gets a lot of things wrong, to put it mildly.
  • Unreliable Narrator: Rudy. Nothing is really different about Les Mis, but she vastly misinterprets or outright ignores so much of it that it comes out very, very, very, different then it ought to be.
