Roleplay / The Adventures Of Insert Name Here

Go To

The Adventures of [Insert Name Here] is a play-by-post roleplay on The Willow Mythos forums. It revolves around the main character, Ben Dover, as he traverses the universe in search of adventure.

Ben is an odd individual, and his adventures are often more than a little comical. When he finds he gets a mysterious phone call from a mysterious person, he finds himself pulled throughout the mulitverse along with four other people. Together, they explore strange worlds, desert oases, and planets full of cats. They encounter love, hate, rivalry, personal challenges, tests of character, monsters, death... And the entire time, Ben is helped along by a mysterious figure who never shows his face and guided slightly by a mysterious being who only shows its voice.

The game is now over, and can be read here. Now has a prequel, starring Theodore Elfred and his team of elves as they traverse the nine worlds of Norse Mythology, which can be played here.

This game provides examples of:

  • Ascended Extra: An Extra. While originally, as the name implies, an extra, she becomes a playable character, if only for a moment.
  • An Adventurer Is You
  • Bag of Holding: Ben is able to carry a bale of hay around with him at all times, without it causing any physical impediment.
  • Character Customization: Very limited, the players are only able to choose the heroes' names.
  • Convenient Questing
  • Critical Failure: Done quite often by the players, oddly enough.
  • Critical Hit: Not quite as often...
  • Demihuman: Elfred is heavily implied to be one of these.
  • Exposition Fairy: Herald explains to Ben some of the rules of the game and leads him along during part of his journey.
  • Five-Man Band: Referenced in-game by their respective titles:
    • The Hero: Ben Dover, the main character.
    • The Lancer(?): John "Johnny" Johnson. Can no longer be considered the Lancer as he has died and disappeared from the character's memories.
    • The Smart Guy: Theodore Elfred. Ben usually turns to him for help solving puzzles.
    • The Big Guy: Ringo. He does all the grunt work and has very high Damage Reduction.
    • The Chick: Kesha. She is the only female.
    • Team Pet: In Ben's first life he had Splendor Man, a sheep. In his second, Splendor Man II, a camel, joined him on his journey.
  • The Herald: Herald
  • He Who Must Not Be Seen
    • The Faceless: The Random Number God never shows his face.
    • The Ghost: There are constant mentions of a certain cat-like furry, but we have yet to see them.
    • The Voice: Herald is never actually seen, only spoken to from an old-fashioned telephone.
  • Homage: The first world Ben visits is cat planet!
  • Advertisement:
  • Hyperactive Metabolism: Ben and his crew are healed by foods, and feel the healing effects almost instantly after eating them.
  • In the Hood:
    • The Random Number God hides its face beneath a black hood.
    • Downplayed by Kesha: You can still see her face, but she is definitely hiding something...
  • Meaningful Name: Theodore Elfred can be shortened to The. Elf. Not to mention Herald, who is... a herald.
  • Metaplot
  • Mysterious Note: The graffiti on the factory wall in cat planet has a suspiciously specific message leading to the lava caves
  • Off the Chart: When casting [VIEW CURRENT STATS] upon herself, An breaks the adorable scale.
  • Our Elves Are Different: Elves in this world worship the Random Number God and, among other things, carry a large bag of roleplaying dice with them at all times.
  • Player Party: The players can control any of the main party, whether directly or indirectly. However, actions are generally centered around Ben.
  • Random Number God: Appears as an actual entity within the game.
  • Unfortunate Names: Ben Dover, as well as his parents, Eileen Dover and Al Caholic.
