Mall of Despair, Blog description

Mall of Despair is a Tumblr-based roleplay group. Based on the visual novel Dangan Ronpa, it takes place in "Angel's Wing Mall," wherein 16 Super High School Level students have been selected to participate in a reality show. Things take a turn for the worse as they find themselves trapped inside the mall, forced into a Shopping Spree of Mutual Killing.

The group started up in May of 2014 by Mod Komaeda/Mod Junko (Masque), and has since gained additional mods and a sequel curently in progress at R Incorperated. Their comods are Mod Nanami (Chell), and Mod Pupkoyama (Lupup)

General Tropes consist of:

  • Anyone Can Die: No character is exempt from being killed off, be it by being killed or being the murderer themselves.
    • From a mod- Even the Mastermind could have died at any moment if they were unable to continue the game to the end.
  • Body of the Week: Or, in this case, two weeks. The game runs on a two-week schedule, with the first week devoted to free-time and motive, and the second to the prompted murder and class trial.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: Pretty much all the 'punishments' for the killers and even some of the victim's deaths.
  • Deadly Game: The setting starts off as a Reality TV show with little indication as to what the actual contest consists of. Turns out it involves everyone having to kill someone else to get out.
    • According to the players, there was some talk about the actual reality show that would have happened had the mastermind not taken over and created the game. It would have played out in a similar vein to "Survivor", only taking place in a shopping mall over a deserted island.
    • Some motives were stolen from the original reality TV show; The chapter 3 motive, which involved sequestered loved ones who were tortured, and the chapter 4 motive involving boxes meant to play on the player's fears, were originally just sequestered as a prize for a challenge, and fearboxes for a "Fear Factor" based challenge.
  • Death by Irony: The executions for the killers all tie back to their talent, destroying them by the very things they were good at.
  • Evidence Scavenger Hunt: Once a body has been discovered, there's a set time period where the players must collect evidence to solve the murder with.

  • Interface Spoiler: In Chapter 3, the students are once again given a single vote for the killer. However, there are two victims. The idea that one of the victims killed the other is tossed around, but the fact that the students only had one vote spoils the fact that there was only one killer. Mentioned and rectified in the sequel.
  • Rule of Pool: A rather grim variant. There's a fountain in the mall, and sure enough, someone ends up being killed in it. Two someones, in fact; one occurred prior to the students' arrival.
