Anime and Manga

  • World War Blue, being a parody of the Console Wars, has in the manga a blonde clad in an orange costume with shoulder pads called Saroid, clearly meant as a Samus stand-in.

Comic Books

  • Scott Pilgrim has one scene where the title character says "I wish I could turn into a Morphing Ball and roll to the bathroom from here, instead of having to stand up."
  • Super Mario Adventures: In the second Mario vs. Wario comic, the titular characters fight to get Princess Toadstool's ideal birthday present — a Samus doll.

Fan Works

Film - Animated

  • The Super Mario Bros. Movie: A news ticker bulletin says there is a mysterious signal coming from Planet Zebes and Tallon IV's home system, System FS-176.

Film - Live-Action

  • Jarhead had this fairly innacurate quote:
What would you be doing if you were a civilian? Staying up late, jacking off... playing Metroid, trying to get to that ninth level? You know what happens when you get there? Nothing. You just start all over again.
  • Press Start (2007) has an Action Girl named Sam, who starts out in a space suit and ends up dressed in a black sports bra and panties. There's also a guy wearing a Justin nametag who is referred to as "Mr. Bailey".
  • Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over: When the kids arrive in a Lethal Lava Land level, this exchange happens:
Juni: Why is it that every video game has lava in it?
Francis: Technically that's not true. There's no lava in Halo. And in Metroid, it's molten magma.note

Video Games

  • Animal Crossing: Wild World includes a Metroid as a furniture item.
  • The character of Justin Bailey in Catherine was explicitly named after the famous Metroid Classic Cheat Code.
  • Dead or Alive: Dimensions has the Pyrosphere from Metroid: Other M, developed by the same crew, as a playable level.
  • Given Retro Studios moved from the Metroid Prime Trilogy to the new Donkey Kong Country games, a few Metroid references were hidden:
  • Dynasty Warriors Vs. has the Zero Suit as an unlockable costume.
  • Among its many, many Shout Outs, Enter the Gungeon references the Metroid series by making Samus' Arm Cannon available as one of its myriad firearms, called the Heroine. The Heroine also synergises with various items (namely, those that confer elemental effects to your shots) to enable the player to toggle between its various beam upgrades (Ice Beam, Plasma Beam, and Wave Beam). As well as this, the Roll Bomb item is a clear reference to the staple Morph Ball bombs, right down to its icon. In a specific callback to the climax of Super Metroid, the player can temporarily avail of a drastic increase to the Heroine's firepower if the Pig saves them from dying.
  • Famicom Wars has the Red Star commander on Donut Island called Samasuun, and his icon is Samus's helmet.
  • Both Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse and Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water have the Zero Suit as an unlockable costume.
  • The Virtual Boy game Galactic Pinball has Samus's Gunship as well as several other Metroid enemies in the minigame Cosmic.
  • Geist has Samus's helmet hidden inside a locker.
  • Kid Icarus: The Komayto enemies are based on Metroids.
    • The idol description for them in Kid Icarus: Uprising references the opening of Super Metroid:
"The last Komayto is not in captivity and Skyland is not at peace."
    • Also in Uprising, a dialogue between Pit and Viridi directly references the Metroid franchise:
Pit: You know, Komaytos look an awful lot like little Metroids.
Viridi: No! Shhhh! Stop right there!
Pit: What's the matter? All I said was that Komaytos look like little Metr—
Viridi: *hums the Metroid Item Get! theme* I can't HEAR you!
    Pit: Hey, what's your problem?
Viridi: This game universe and that game universe have NOTHING to do with each other! So don't go around spreading rumors!
  • Kirby:
    • The Great Cave Offensive in Kirby Super Star includes a Screw Ball (later renamed Screw Attack in Kirby Super Star Ultra) as one of the treasures to collect.
    • In Kirby's Dream Land 3, one of the level objectives is to defeat a bunch of Metroidsnote . Samus herself rewards you with a heart star for doing so. She even takes off her helmet for '100% Completion'.
  • Super Mario RPG: After Mario gains the fifth Star Piece, Samus can be found sleeping in the guest room at the Mushroom Castle. If Mario talks to her, she says "I'm resting up for Mother Brain." Also, there's a toy of Samus that can be found in a toy box inside a room at the top of Booster Tower.
  • In the NES version of Tetris, Samus makes a cameo (where she is playing cello) alongside other Nintendo characters in the success screen of Type-B if cleared on Level 9 or 19.
