Wake up, babe. New Death Note character just dropped.

Being an internationally popular manga and anime, Death Note has been referenced in various other works.

Examples:

Anime & Manga

  • The fourth episode of Yo-kai Watch Jam - Yo-kai Academy Y: Close Encounters of the N Kind is a Whole-Plot Reference to Death Note called " Mess Note — If Your Name is Written You Become a Mess".
  • Light cameos in an episode of Death Parade.
  • In Chapter 268 of Black Clover, among the devils in the underworld, Ryuk can be seen in the background.
  • In GTO: 14 Days in Shonan, the abusive father of one of the girls calls himself "a walking Death Note".
  • Onani Master Kurosawa has been called "Death Note with fapping".
  • The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You: In Chapter 30, the Imagine Spot of Mei laughing with her eyes open bears an uncanny resemblance to Light pulling an Evil Laugh.
  • Light Oozora from Zombie Land Saga is a very obvious Expy of Light Yagami; he looks like a younger version of Light Yagami, has the same given name (though this Light's name is written in katakana instead of kanji), is almost as arrogant and manipulative, and even uses the famous "Just as planned!" line.
  • In the Dark Continent arc of Hunter × Hunter, Shizuku asks Chrollo to use one of the Nen powers he stole and stored in his Nen book (Lovely Ghostwriter). Chrollo reveals to her and Bonolenov that said power has disappeared from the book; due to the way his Nen power works, this means that the original user of that power (that being Neon Nostrade, last seen several arcs ago) died. After a pause, Shizuku says "Boss, that book of yours... it's kinda like a Death Note, isn't it?".
  • Good Luck Girl!: One scene has Ichika imagine herself as Rem during her death scene.

Comic Books

  • The 14th issue of the Treehouse of Horror comic has an entire Death Note parody called "Murder, He Wrote" where Bart finds a similar notebook to the titular Death Note that was originally owned by the late Krusty who died after using a page out of it to write an autograph for Bart and serves the same role as Ryuk. The notebook works under the same principles and Bart is chased by a detective named "L", and Lisa takes a similar pose and expression to L. Lawliet.

Fan Works

  • Lacrime D'oro del Vento Aureo features a small homage to Death Note in the form of The Boss of Passione communicating with other capos through a laptop during a capo meeting. It's even stated that the Passione logo is on the screen on a white background and the voice coming from the laptop is distorted, which is just like how L communicated while he kept himself hidden.

Music

  • Soulja Boy has a Death Note inspired mixtape called "Death Note", which also has cover art inspired by the anime.
  • The method they use in this song to count the dead is a death note.

Western Animation

  • The Amazing World of Gumball episode "The Shippening" is arguably a Whole-Plot Reference to Death Note, though with shipping fanfiction being its power as opposed to murder. When the characters try to handle the effects of it, things get... complicated.
  • In Treehouse of Horror, the second short of "Treehouse of Horror XXXIII" is a parody of Death Note called Death Tome, with Lisa in the role of Light and El Barto in the role of L. Notably, it is animated in a style very similar to the anime, courtesy of one of the studios who animated it.

Video Games

  • Yandere Simulator: One in-universe anime that can be watched at home is Life Note, which features the same premise of an student owning a book that can kill whomever the writer wishes. The major difference between this and the original anime (aside from the obvious title) is the protagonist being a gender-swapped Expy of Light Yamagi, who's more well-intentioned and sympathetic.
