Film

  • The Pedro Almodóvar film All About My Mother (or Todo Sobre Mi Madre) revolves around the play in a few ways. To start with, the main character reveals she was in a school production of it as a child and takes her son to see a production of it, which sets off a short chain of events that result in his death. When she goes back to Madrid, she befriends some of the cast from the play that she saw beforehand and ends up filling in for a cast member at one point.
  • In the Woody Allen movie Sleeper, Miles (Allen), a former health food store owner who wakes up 200 years in the future, has been brainwashed by the government, and is later rescued by Luna (Diane Keaton), the woman he first came in contact with in the future. At one point, Miles is so delirious, he starts imitating Blanche DuBois, and Luna's partner suggests she just go with it, so she starts imitating Stanley Kowalski, which eventually leads Miles to snap out of it.
  • In Quick Change, Grimm, Phyllis and Loomis have successfully robbed a bank, but are having trouble getting to the airport to escape from the police. At one point, they have to walk to the airport, and they come across a woman crying out, "Floras para los muertos!" Loomis, who's already freaked out by everything that's been happening, wonders what she means, and when Grimm claims, "I sure couldn't tell you," Phyllis (who had already commented on the symbolism), replies, "Oh, you know, Grimm, it means 'flowers for the dead'." At this point, Loomis freaks out even more, and Grimm gives Phyllis a Death Glare.
  • Hollywood Homicide: K.C., one of the two main characters, is a homicide detective who moonlights as a yoga instructor, but what he really wants to do is act. To that end, he puts on a community theater production of Streetcar, and the joke of the movie is how full of Stylistic Suck it is.
  • In Poor Things Duncan cries Bella's name in a Large Ham way while she looks down at him from a balcony.

  • The Big Bang Theory: Penny attends acting classes, and she performs as Blanche in their school production. This episode proves that she has some genuine talent as an actress and that she is not absolutely hopeless.
  • Sabrina the Teenage Witch's Season 4 episode "She's Baaack" has Sabrina trying to discourage Amanda's crush on Harvey. So she turns him into a Stanley Expy.
  • The Modern Family episode 'Door to Door' has Cam and Gloria looking for the dog called Stella, finding her with a girl called Blanche.

  • Gilmore Girls: In the first season episode "That Damned Donna Reed", Rory has to take care of a canary, whom Lorelei names, "Stella", and asks is Stella has a friend named Stanley. Naturally, when Lorelei agrees to take care of the bird while Rory is house-sitting, and Lorelei comes home to find the bird has disappeared, she yells out, "Stella!"
  • Due South: Ray Kowalski's full name is Stanley Raymond Kowalski, and he notes his father, who named him, was a big Marlon Brando fan. Ray personally finds it an Embarrassing First Name. His ex-wife's name is Stella, as well (who doesn't seem bothered by the name at all, even keeping the last name Kowalski after the divorce).
  • In the Family Ties episode "Diary of a Young Girl," Alex auditions for the role of Stanley. Jennifer makes fun of his fake southern accent.

Music

  • Bob Dylan: The first song on his album Love & Theft, "Tweedle Dee & Tweedle Dum", has the characters taking "a streetcar named desire".
  • Lana Del Rey's songs "Kinda Outta Luck" and "Carmen" both make references to the famous "relying on the kindness of strangers" line.
  • Sade's song Smooth Operator has the following lyrics:
    Diamond life, lover boy
He move in space with minimum waste and maximum joy
    City lights and business nights
When you require streetcar desire for higher heights
Which is a shout out, of course, to the movie, A Streetcar Named Desire.

  • There is a musical production of Streetcar Named Desire in The Simpsons episode "A Streetcar Named Marge", with Marge playing Blanche and Ned Flanders playing Stanley. Of course, they spoofed the Say My Name scene for all its worth: "STTTELLLLAAA! Can you hear me YELLLLAAAHHH?!"
