Recap / Yu Gi Oh Anime S 1 E 48 Dungeon Dice Monsters 3

Go To

Cornered, Yugi turns to the Help Screen provided to him, and he locates the information about his most recent monster, Thunder Ball. He sees that it has a powerful effect, but he'll need a good roll to make it work. With all his will, he rolls his next three dice and gains 4 Magic Crests. With these, he casts Thunder Ball's ability twice, destroying two of Duke's monsters and the most immediate threat to his Heart Points.

Duke moves to attack Yugi with his monster, but he switches it to defense mode, letting it survive and defeat Duke's Battle Ox on the next turn. This doesn't faze Duke, though, as he points out that while all of the red squares are his, Yugi can't summon anything from them and is stuck with only two patches of blue squares to summon monsters with. Duke them places a Warp Vortex to let him move into the heart of Yugi's field, but Yami Yugi uses his Strike Ninja and a Vortex of his own to turn the tables, removing the first of Duke's Heart Points.

Furious, Duke summons Orgoth the Relentless, his strongest monster, and moves to attack Strike Ninja—but Yugi uses the Ninja's special ability to save it, hitting Duke directly again! On Duke's next turn, though, Orgoth attacks the Ninja again and this time Yugi has no Trap Crests to save him so it's destroyed! With his best chance of winning gone, it's only a matter of time before Duke wipes out Yugi's defenses and takes him down...

This episode contains examples of:

  • Adaptational Explanation: In the manga version of the arc, Yugi simply intuits advanced mechanics of the game without any outside information. The anime tones this down by having a help screen computer terminal as part of the arena that Yugi can consult to study what the advanced mechanics actually are.
  • Cassandra Truth: The reason why Duke lured Yugi into a duel is because he refuses to believe he defeated Maximillian Pegasus at Duelist Kingdom fairly. Duke hopes to defeat Yugi and prove he's a cheater and his victory was just a fluke.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Duke explains how a Black Die can open up a rare Warp Vortex and says he plans to set up two to create a shortcut across the field and right at Yugi's Heart Points, but he only manages to open one. Yugi creates the second Warp Vortex himself and uses Duke's own strategy against him, sending his Strike Ninja through the vortex and bypassing most of Duke's monster to strike at his Heart Points.
  • Hope Spot: After Yugi's blue field has been boxed in so he can't reach Duke's Heart Points, making it seem hopeless, Duke admits there is still one option Yugi has. Both players are allowed to walk on the paths their opponent makes, so Yugi still has the option of walking on Duke's own path back to his Heart Points. However, if he does that he will need to fight all of Duke's monsters along the way, which isn't an easy option either since if all of Yugi's monsters are destroyed in the attempt he will be left defenseless.
  • It's Personal: Along with the above reason why Duke wants to beat Yugi, there was also the deal between he and Peasus made that remained incomplete after the latter lost and disappeared. Duke wants to avenge Pegasus and make Yugi pay for endangering his Dungeon Dice Monster project.
  • Oh, Crap!: Yugi when he realizes that he doesn't have anymore trap crests to save his Strike Ninja a second time.
  • Pyrrhic Victory: Yugi manages to successfully destroy Duke's Battle Ox, but Duke isn't phased by this and after giving an Evil Laugh explains that his true goal of playing Battle Ox was to expand his field. Duke's red field now reaches from one side of the stadium to the other, but Yugi's blue field has been trapped, preventing him from reaching Duke's side and leaving him with little room to summon anymore monsters.
  • Revenge: Duke wants revenge on Yugi for defeating Pegasus and stopping his dreams.
