Recap / Yu Gi Oh Anime S 1 E 15 Winning Through Intimidation

Go To

Panik and Yami Yugi's duel continues. While the match itself is going well for Yugi, the real battle is in their trash-talking and intimidation tactics—Yugi mocks Panik mercilessly, causing him to slip up and make several mistakes.

Yugi activates the Swords of Revealing Light, revealing Panik's monsters and preventing him from attacking for three turns. Cowering in fear, Panik plays Chaos Shield to protect his monsters from any assault. When the three turns are almost up, Yugi uses Catapult Turtle to launch Gaia the Dragon Champion at Castle of Dark Illusions, destroying the castle's flotation ring. However, the castle is still standing... until the Swords disappear. Imprisoned by the Chaos Shield, Panik's monsters are crushed by the falling castle and Yami Yugi wins the duel.

Enraged, Panik decides to kill Yugi and attempts to burn him alive, but the Millennium Puzzle shields him from the fire. Yami Yugi gives Panik the final Mind Crush of the series, banishing him to oblivion, and he and Mai promise one another an honorable duel.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Armor-Piercing Question: After it seems like Yugi sacrificed Gaia the Dragon Champion and a big chunk of his life points for nothing, Yugi asks Panik, who is celebrating his "guaranteed victory", why is his Castle of Dark Illusions still floating if it has lost its flotation ring. Panik immediately gets an Oh, Crap! face before Yugi explains that the Swords of Revealing Light are the only thing keeping the castle in place, and the moment his turn ends the whole thing will come crashing down on the rest of Panik's monsters.
  • Compressed Adaptation: Like Yugi's duel with Weevil, this episode and the following one were originally aired as one episode with a music video montage inserted into the episode that fast-forward through quite a bit of the duel. After the first few airings when the show got more popular both episodes were then aired separately from then on.
  • Defrosting the Ice Queen: This serves as the first step with Mai's Character Development into a friend of Yugi and the others. She is on Yugi's side for the entire duel against Panik, and initially tries to turn down her star chips after he wins them back. When Joey messes around with her until she demands them back, he does so happily while telling her the lesson she should take from the duel is to let her guard down now and then. The episode ends with her promising to repay Yugi for this and have an honorable duel with him one day.
  • Don't You Dare Pity Me!: Mai initially refuses to take her star chips back, feeling she doesn't deserve them since Yugi was the one who won them. But when Joey messes around and pretends to steal them since she doesn't want them, she gets mad and demands them back, with Joey immediately doing so.
  • Foreshadowing: Bakura is the only one besides Panik who flinches when the Swords of Revealing Light are played, hinting that the evil spirit is far from gone.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: When the Castle of Dark Illusions comes crashing down, Yugi points out that none of Panik's monsters can escape from it because Panik's own Chaos Shield has them trapped.
  • New Powers as the Plot Demands: When Panik refuses to accept defeat and attempts to kill Yugi anyway, the Puzzle demonstrates a new power and blocks the flamethrowers keeping Yugi safe. This is in contrast to the original manga where Yugi simply immediately subdues Panik with a Penalty Game before he has a chance to do anything of the sort.
  • Sore Loser: Panik's response to losing is to try to kill Yugi with his flamethrowers. It fails, thanks to the Puzzle.
  • Title Drop: Yugi makes one while summing up Panik's strategy: "Winning through intimidation, not through skill."
  • Why Won't You Die?: Panik is gobsmacked that his final flamethrower assault fails to kill Yugi.
Panik: You...survived! How is that possible?
Yugi: My Millennium Puzzle protects me from your cowardly assault, but nothing will protect you from...OBLIVION! (mind-crushes Panik)
