Recap / Young Justice S4 E13: Kaerb Ym Traeh!

Go To

Klarion joins forces with Nabu to stop the Child. Perdita makes a surprise visit to Beast Boy.

Tropes:

  • Achilles' Heel: Traci spots the crack in the aptly-named Flaw's body and, with a well-aimed shot of bad luck magic, destroys him for good. Without Flaw to anchor her, Child is unable to remain on Earth and is finally defeated.
  • Addictive Magic: Mary's hunger for power rears its head again during the final battle with Child. This causes Zatanna to veto Mary playing host to Doctor Fate, as her penchant of "collateral damage for the greater good" is how Doctor Fate himself operates, and no one wants him to have a like-minded host. Mary leaves the team in rage as a result.
  • Armor-Piercing Question: Khalid asks Zatanna if their training and them being selected for it, was always meant for them to just rotate in serving Nabu so her father can live a more normal life (and not for their own sakes or any actual desire to teach). She doesn't give a clear answer, falling silent instead, but she at least asks Traci if she is okay with sharing the burden, as she and Khalid are already onboard due to their familial connections (hers with Zatara and his with Kent Nelson).
  • Bittersweet Ending:
    • With the combined efforts of Zatanna, Zatara/Nabu, the Sentinels, Klarion, and even Vandal Savage, Child is finally defeated and banished from Earth. With the world saved, Zatanna, Khalid and Traci offer themselves as hosts for Nabu, each sharing a week of their time and allowing Zatara to have a life. Unfortunately, Mary is left out for her reckless use of her power and, feeling betrayed, leaves the group. With no one to turn to, Granny Goodness of Apokolips convinces her to wield her Sergeant form once again. Khalid’s trust in Zatanna is also damaged with his doubts on her motive.
    • Zatanna helps send the school bus with the driver and the kids back to their time, allowing them to seek therapy for the chaos Klarion put them through. However, while looking into their minds, she senses what appears to be Conner's spirit in trouble.
  • Borrowed Catchphrase: Child, upon being defeated, simply says "Dang it" just like Klarion does.
  • Brick Joke: After getting off the bus at the North Pole, Penny says that she needs to use the bathroom. Once the bus is sent back to its proper place in time, she still needs to go.
  • The Cameo: After Zatanna and the others leave the North Pole, Isis and Ice teleport there to deal with the fire pillar Child put there.
  • Dead Guy Junior: Once they find a cat to be Klarion's new familiar, Zatanna suggests he can name her after Teekl. Klarion dismisses her and decides to give the cat the completely original name... of Teekl.
  • Enemy Mine: After much reluctance, Dr. Fate agrees to team up with Klarion to fight Child.
  • Get Out!: Beast Boy bitterly, yet quietly, shows Perdita the door when she says she refuses to stand by and let him destroy himself.
Beast Boy: There's the door, Your Majesty.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Klarion insists he has to come up with an original name for his new cat. After a few seconds, he chooses 'Teekl'.
  • I'm Standing Right Here: Zatanna and Mary discuss if they can even trust Klarion not to stab them in the back during the fight against Child while they are in the bus Klarion is possessing. Klarion repeatedly reminds them he can hear everything throughout their conversation, which Zatanna simply ignores each time.
  • Invisibility Cloak: Zatanna uses a cloaking spell to hide herself and her Sentinels for a sneak attack. As soon as Khalid attacks, Child figures out the ruse and exposes them.
  • Life Drain: In a desperate attempt to stop Flaw, Mary starts draining the life energy of everything around her like before, which happens to include her friends and mentor. Both Child and Klarion are impressed.
  • Love Cannot Overcome: Despite her best efforts, Perdita's appeals to Beast Boy fall on deaf ears.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Zatanna's distrust of Mary being a candidate for Nabu's Helmet made her more susceptible to someone far worse: Granny Goodness.
  • Noodle Incident: Implied regarding how Traci found her lizard familiar Leroy.
  • Rain of Something Unusual: Child causes the sky to rain fire, forcing Zatanna to put up a shield to protect her Sentinels. Nabu and Klarion can fly around in it unharmed.
  • Reasoning with God: Vandal Savage manages to convince the Lords of Order and Chaos that everything he has done, even his pact with Darkseid, is to maintain the Holy Balance. The pact will end with a final showdown between Earth and Apokolips. If the latter wins, the balance will be lost for good and both Order and Chaos will suffer. Both sides agree and the Lords of Chaos revoke Child's extra power but will not withdraw her, expecting the scales to balance themselves.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Mary decides to leave Zatanna's tutelage due to not being chosen as a Nabu host.
  • Status Quo Is God: Played With. The volcanoes Child left over the world still haven't been fixed and Zatara is finally freed from Nabu. But it's clear that the damage is treated as the same as any other natural disaster and Zatara is clearly retired from any form of super heroics. This is best shown by Klarion himself, a Chaos Lord, who is not only back as a member of the Light and Savage's partner, but even names his replacement cat familiar 'Teekl' after saying he'll give her a totally original name.
  • The Stinger: A twofer.
    • Black Canary and Zatara are sitting on a bench in the Watchtower talking about Charlie and the bus kids, and Dinah consoles Giovanni over his 10-year-long confinement to Doctor Fate, which he breaks down into tears over.
    • Mary is tearfully sulking in what appears to be an abandoned arcade, with a mysteriously familiar voice telling her that she shouldn't listen to her friends and should embrace the power she has by becoming Sergeant Marvel once again. If the credits and subtitles are anything to go by, that voice is Granny Goodness.
  • Stripped to the Bone: Khalid uses a spell on Child that anatomically divides her into her skin, muscles, organs, and bones, with all four parts seemingly sharing a single consciousness. Child compliments the technique, and even says it would have been effective if she were truly organic and didn't have the other Chaos Lords backing her, at which point she recombines into a single being.
  • Superpowered Evil Side: Mary had seen Sergeant Marvel as this since she vowed to never transform. Unfortunately, Granny is able to convince her to embrace her again after feeling neglected by her friends.
  • Superpower Meltdown: Child's skin starts to crack with red energy beneath as she goes all out trying to kill the heroes.
  • Torso with a View: Klarion is stabbed through the stomach with a root, but survives because New Teekl is unharmed. After Child is defeated, he dispels the root but not the wound, leaving him with a giant hole, claiming that he kinda likes it. New Teekl even hangs out in it as Klarion teleports away.
  • Very Special Episode: Perdita visits Garfield and notices him acting distant from her, his team, and his career. She then finds an unhealthy amount of sleeping aids near him and begs him to offer help before he sends her out. She warns him beforehand that she's not going to stand by waiting for him to self-destruct if he continues keeping himself away.
  • Villainous Breakdown: The stoic Child slowly loses her composure as Zatanna's team starts to fight back.
Child: The kitty... is not... safe! NONE OF YOU... ARE... SAFE!
  • Visual Pun: Klarion says he feels warm and fuzzy inside... while Teekl sits in the gaping hole in his torso.
  • Wham Line: After Granny's goading...
    Mary: Shazam.
  • Wham Shot: Zatanna sees Conner's spirit in whatever in-between domain the school bus crossed, with three slash wounds across his chest, begging for help.
  • What Measure Is a Non-Human?: Khalid, working as a doctor, is uncomfortable using his Stripped to the Bone spell on Child, as he swore an oath to do no harm. Zatanna tells him to press on because the Lord of Chaos is a kind of evil that is "not even vaguely human". Though it's worth noting that this wouldn't have been lethal for her in any circumstance.
  • "Where Are They Now?" Epilogue: Black Canary gives one to Zatara in spoken form during The Stinger about the named bus passengers. Charlie the bus driver is still working the same job in a different city, and Penny (the girl who had to use the restroom) has just graduated from college.
  • You Are Not Ready: Zatanna decides against trusting Mary to be one of Nabu's rotating hosts because her desire for power would only reinforce Nabu's negative qualities. Mary takes offense and leaves the Sentinels of Magic altogether.
