Recap / Young Justice S3 E14: Influence

Go To

The Leaguers in space track the activities of Apokolips.

Tropes in this episode:

  • Agony Beam: When the machine in the asteroid base is activated, it causes horrible pain to everyone caught in its area of effect. It's not clear if this is precisely what it's intended to do, since it's not finished yet, though Granny clearly expected that it would have such an effect.
  • Armor-Piercing Attack: The Javelin has Nth Metal missiles which can pierce shields.
  • Bad Boss: Granny's weapon causes extreme pain not only to the Justice Leaguers but also the Furies they're fighting. Granny clearly couldn't care less and may even enjoy it.
  • Berserk Button: After finding out Granny's true nature, Gar really doesn't like her mentioning his mother.
  • Bring It: Garfield boldly says this when Granny threatens him.
  • Curse Cut Short: The stanza of Guy's chanty gets as far as, "Guy Gardner's shapely a-" before Wonder Woman gives him the mute button.
  • Deceased Fall-Guy Gambit: Granny pins the Goode VR mess on a rogue employee who is already dead, which she blames on the traffickers he was working with.
  • Destruction Equals Off-Switch: When Superman destroys the control console for Granny's machine, it immediately shuts off.
  • For Your Own Good: Granny, in true Abusive Parents fashion, claims that electrocuting Big Barda isn't torture but discipline for her own good.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: If you pause during the social-media posts from G. Gordon Godfrey’s broadcast, you can see that the posts are from Captain Cold and Condiment King, complete with puns related to their gimmicks.
  • Got Me Doing It: Superman instinctively responds to their "underwhelming" situation with "Stay whelmed." Hawkwoman, not having spent as much time with the Team, doesn't get it, to Superman's belated awkwardness.
  • Lured into a Trap: Big Barda deliberately left an ion trail for the League to follow so they would come to the asteroid base and be destroyed.
  • Mythology Gag:
  • Out of Focus: Dick appears briefly at the start of the episode and he isn't seen for the remainder or the next two episodes.
  • Pardon My Klingon: The Thanagarian swear "Kakash."
  • Save the Villain: Superman yanks Big Barda out of the machine, much to her shock. Wonder Woman attempts a similar escape, but is less sucessful in making it out.
  • Space Is Noisy: Averted, the space battle is completely silent except for Guy Gardner radioing in.
  • Stylistic Suck: Guy Gardner's song.
  • Take That!: Lex Luthor swears that he's avoiding conflicts of interest between his businesses and his new position, by handing the former over to a blind trust... that just happens to be run by a family member of his. This is a pretty direct jab at Donald Trump, who was accused of similar tactics during his presidency. Alternatively, it also highlights the fact that Luthor at least pretends to have this level of ethics, as Trump did not put any of his companies in a blind trust. In the comics, Lex Luthor was actually elected president, and fully divested himself of his company by turning the reins over to Talia al Ghul. Comic book fans have pointed out in the past that this means Donald Trump is literally less ethical than a comic book supervillain.
  • Thrown Out the Airlock: Granny uses a variation on this by boom tubing the Leaguers into space just outside the asteroid. Luckily, Guy is there to share his life support shield.
  • Unfinished, Untested, Used Anyway: Whatever machine Granny Goodness and Desaad are designing in the asteroid base, Granny has it activated before they've completed it in an attempt to disable the Leaguers. It causes them horrible pain, but Superman manages to force his way free and destroy the control console.
  • We Need a Distraction: Hawkman fires an Nth Metal missile at the asteroid base to cause an explosion, allowing Superman to punch a hole in the hull in an attempt to pass it off as a secondary breach. Granny isn't fooled.
