Tropes

  • Batman Gambit: Xena pulls one here; after implying with Ares to get his aid in the siege, she brings what appeared to be the child to give to Athena in exchange for getting her forces to stand down. The threat of Eve's death spurs Ares to fight Athena while the remaining townspeople ambush her forces who were caught napping. When Ares demands her to commit to her end of the bargain, Xena replied she never made that deal, revealing the 'baby' to be a doll. She even set an explosion right where her mom was passing by where she and Ares was about to have sex to get her to call off the intercourse.
  • The Dragon: Ilainus to Athena
  • Fair-Play Villain: Averted. Athena saw through Xena's ruse and refused to fight her in a one-on-one duel with no powers.
  • Healing Hands: Athena heals a wound on Ilainus' face.
  • National Anthem: Cyrene and the citizens of Amphipolis sing the city anthem in defiance of Athena's plea to surrender.
  • Rousing Speech: Gabrielle gives one to a group of citizens on the barricades when they considered surrending:
Gabrielle: Do you want to give Eve to Athena?! Does anybody else feel that way?! We give up the baby and go back to our fields in peace... until the next god comes along and they want your child... or yours. We're not fighting for Xena. We're fighting for ourselves, for our right to be treated like human beings, not game pieces. If any one of you is willing to give up their own child then speak up! Cause I will not have you fighting next to me!
  • The Siege: This time taking place in Xena's hometown.
  • Tunnel Network: It's revealed that Amphipolis has a network of tunnels that run through the city. Xena tried to use them to flank enemy forces. Athena saw that coming.
  • Water Source Tampering: Athena revealed to Xena that she poisoned the water supply to hasten the end of the siege.
  • Wound That Will Not Heal: Athena's healing powers have its limits against mortal wounds, as she failed to save Ilainus.
