Season 1, Episode 1

Pilot

The vampires try to plan a lavish bloodfeast in honor of a visit by their ancient master from the Old Country.

Tropes That Appear In This Episode:

  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: During his New Era Speech, the Baron suddenly stops when he sees the documentary crew. When it is explained to him, he just goes with it.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Nadja is concerned that if her former, secret, sexual relationship with the Baron comes to light, Laszlo might be upset. Laszlo proudly boasts about his sexual relationship with the Baron, shows no concern for his wife, and hopes to hook up with the Baron again.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Unlike the rest of the vampires, Colin Robinson is an energy vampire, a type of Daywalking Vampire that feeds on the misery of those around him (including other vampires) by being unlikably boring and obnoxious. When he does this to the other vampire's intended prey, it sucks all of the nutritional value of their blood right out of them.
  • Funetik Aksent: Nador pronounces the "crepe" in crepe paper phonetically, and so assumes it's spooky because it's "creepy paper". Laszlo gets very annoyed by this.
  • Nerds Are Virgins: Virgins are a favorite prey for vampires, and Guillermo finds that LARPing groups are the easiest place to find virgins in abundance.
  • Nonhumans Lack Attributes: The Baron appears from his coffin as a very stereotypical withered vampire humanoid, with a typically blank, censored, Barbie Doll Anatomy crotch. Laszlo immediately breaks the fourth wall by saying that he seemed to recall him having genitals.
  • Pivotal Wake-up: Nandor wakes up in this manner in his debut scene, after Guillermo finally manages to open the coffin.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: Throughout the whole episode, it's hammered home how Guillermo is Nandor's Beleaguered Assistant as his familiar, which Guillermo puts up with because he desperately wants to be made a vampire. At the end of the episode, Nandor tells Guillermo that his years of service will be rewarded, making Guillermo think Nandor will finally make him a vampire...only for Nandor to give him a portrait of the two of them made from glitter as a gift instead. Even worse, Nandor depicts Guillermo as a vampire in the portrait.
