Recap / Welcome To Paradise

Go To

Self-absorbed park ranger, Steve Williams worries that Ethel's arrival will jeopardize his stranglehold on Ranger of the Month and does whatever it takes to sabotage her. Meanwhile, Malloy, a bitter, sarcastic bear cub (who was adopted by Head Ranger, Woody), is put on a diet after Ethel declares that Malloy's junk food eating will take years off his life — and goes on a desperate search for his beloved fatty foods.

  • The Ace: In direct contrast to Steve, Ethel is a highly-competent park ranger who easily succeeds at everything she does.
    Steve: Freaking show off.
  • The Alcoholic: Ethel is revealed to be an alcoholic, who got fired from her last job as a tour guide at Yellowstone for getting drunk at work.
Ethel: So, this is a tree, ... and I've had 11 abortions.
  • Asian Store-Owner: Woody hires a Korean convenience store owner to follow Denzel around and make sure he doesn't steal anything.
  • Bestiality Is Depraved: Bobby rapes Malloy up the butt. However, nobody seems to care and Steve only punishes Bobby by making him pick up litter.
Steve: What? Same-sex bear molestation is only a misdemeanor.
  • Black Comedy: Woody has a dark sense of humor, as exemplified in this episode.
Woody: That guy you hit with a jetski decided to forget the lawsuit. Of course, he forgets everything now because of the brain damage! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
  • Blackface: Steve went in blackface for his ranger of the month photo for February.
Steve: That's right, brotha. Black History Month too!
  • Collector of the Strange: Connie collects Ethel's toenail clippings ... and snorts them like coke.
  • Cutaway: This episode has several.
    • Expository cutaway of Steve killing Malloy's parents.
    • Malloy making Steve an AIDS cake for breakfast.
    • Denzel gets a surprise vsit from the KKK.
    • Malloy steals Ethel's vibrator batteries.
    • Woody acts like a psychopath and shoots himself in the head, while using a Kermit the Frog puppet.
    • Ethel going on a drunken tirade at Yellowstone.
  • Did I Just Say That Out Loud?: At the end of the episode, Steve accidentally says out loud, how he spiked Ethel's coffee, when he thought he was saying it in his head.
Steve: Good thing I'll never tell a soul.
  • Drunk Driver: Ethel gets drunk off her ass and drives a helicopter. As you can guess, chaos ensues and she causes a complete trail of absolute destruction all over Hazelhurst.
Ethel: Hey, get out of the fast lane! Stupid mountain.
  • Employee of the Month: Steve has been the ranger of the month every month since he started working there, although this is mostly just because nobody else gives a shit about their job.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Denzel explains his love for old white women as though this is the first time people have heard about it.
  • Failure Hero: Steve fucks up absolutely everything he tries in this episode.
Steve: Woody, look! I saved a hiker!
    Woody: ... He's dead, Steve.
Steve: He was alive when I found him.
  • Freudian Slip: Steve accidentally says something about an amputee kid.
Steve: It's good to be here, speaking to the Nub Scouts.
  • Friend to All Living Things: Ethel goes all Ace Ventura in this episode, having all the park animals crawl all over her, loving everything about her.
  • The Graph Shows the Trend: Woody shows a chart, showing how tourism at Brickleberry has dropped significantly this past month.
Woody: Alright, rangers. Do you know what that is?
Denzel: Is it the devil's penis?
  • Irony: Steve reads a book about safe driving, ... while driving. He ends up running over two bears and killing them.
  • Love at First Sight: Steve and Connie both experience this for Ethel upon first seeing her.
  • Love Makes You Dumb: Although he's already a complete dumbfuck as it is, when Steve saw Ethel watching him, while he was teaching the cub scouts, he suddenly started acting a little bit dumber and ended up emptying an entire canister of gasoline into a campfire, blowing the place up.
  • Never My Fault: Woody fires Ethel for her drunk helicopter flying and later regrets it, as she was the park's best ranger. He blames Steve for letting him fire her.
    • Although, technically it was kind of Steve's fault, as he was the one who spiked her coffee and got her drunk to begin with.
  • Noodle Incident: Malloy reminds Steve of a time when he got drunk and thought the paper shredder was a vagina.
  • Man on Fire: Steve uses way too much gasoline, when lighting a campfire and sets himself on fire.
  • Minor with Fake I.D.: Malloy is canonically about 13 years old in bear years and he tried to buy alcohol from a convenience store with Woody's ID.
  • The Scapegoat: Malloy gives Woody's car away and Denzel gets blamed.
  • Secret Diary: Connie steals Ethel's secret diary and reads everything about her.
  • Slipping a Mickey: Steve spikes Ethel's coffee with vodka to get her drunk.
  • Standard Snippet: At the very beginning of the episode, Edvard Grieg's "Peer Gynt" plays at the beginning of the episode, while all the animals are fucking.
  • Title Drop: The first line of dialogue in the show is Steve doing this to the episode title.
Steve: Take it all in, kids. This is nature in all its majesty. Welcome to Brickleberry.
