Charlie attempts to cure Alan of his recent bout of sleepwalking; Jake sees a therapist (Jane Lynch).

Tropes:

  • "Anger Is Healthy" Aesop: The episode focuses on Charlie trying to get Alan to deal with his suppressed angry feelings.
  • Berserk Button: Judith constantly nagging Alan and not getting pancakes for his mushu are this for Alan.
  • Brutal Honesty: Linda tells Charlie maybe they can schedule another session to deal with his "fear of vaginas ".
  • Deadpan Snarker: Dr. Linda Freeman snarks constantly to Charlie and Alan as she helps them get to the bottom of their problems.
    Linda Freeman: Well, if I had to guess, and that's pretty much all I do here...
  • Hilariously Abusive Childhood: Rose reveals her parents used to put a football helmet on her and strap her in bed. And she wasn't even a sleepwalker.
  • Manchild Alan throws such tantrums that Charlie feels that the only he can deal with him is by taking him to Jake's child psychologist.
  • Masturbation Means Sexual Frustration: Evelyn reveals this cured Alan's sleepwalking when he was a teenager. Charlie tries to get Alan to indulge in this. It doesn't work.
  • Nobody Calls Me "Chicken"!: After Charlie calls Alan a wimp in front of a child psychiatrist, Alan snaps and starts beating him up.
  • Rage Breaking Point: After all his suppressed rage towards his ex-wife and brother, it takes Charlie calling him a wimp for Alan to snap and beat him in the child psychiatrist's office.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Suppressed Rage: Alan has a lot of suppressed rage, particularly towards his ex-wife. Instead of dealing with his anger in a healthy way, he suppresses it resulting in Alan sleepwalking.
  • Take That!: Charlie calls Jake's child psychiatrist Linda Freeman "a Rugrat Exorcist".
  • The Oldest Profession: Charlie pays two hookers Darline and Annette to sleep with Alan. It doesn't work.
  • Unusual Euphemism: During a fight, Charlie confesses to Alan that he was hoping if he got him to sleep with one of the two hookers he paid, it would make Alan stop "making invisible birthday cakes". Alan is confused by the metaphor.
  • You Need to Get Laid: Charlie believes Alan needs to have sex to cure his suppressed rage.
