Recap / 21 Jump Street S02E09 "You Ought To Be in Prison"

Go To

I've got this theory... that we [the Jump Street Team] are all actors. We go undercover all the time, right? Now what is that? That's playing a character... Now whats's that? That's acting.
Penhall, unwittingly summarizing the premise of the series

Hanson and Penhall go undercover as "bodyguards" for a movie star—much to their chagrin, because the guy is intolerable and doesn't even take the threats against him seriously. While working with this movie star, Hanson and Penhall's images end up being broadcasted on live TV. Coincidentally, Waxer (guest star returning from the pilot episode, who got arrested by Hanson back then) just escaped from prison, and upon noticing Hanson on TV, is now out for revenge. He therefore kidnaps Hanson (plus actor Jeremy, who happens to be with Hanson at the time).

This episode provides examples of:

  • Jerkass: Actor Jeremy is known to act like an asshole to co-workers, randomly beat people up, and act very arrogant and unpleasant.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: After a stalker gets in his trailer, Jeremy points out that Penhall and Hanson did a less-than-stellar job protecting him.
  • Mr. Fanservice: In-Universe. Actor Jeremy is very much noted to be physically attractive to his female fans, with even Judy remarking she finds him very attractive.
  • Revenge: Waxer got arrested by Hanson in the pilot episode. Now, in this episode, he is escaped from prison and immediately sets out to get revenge on Hanson, by kidnapping him.
  • Stalker with a Crush: Actor Jeremy has a fan (a teenage girl) who breaks into his trailer, keeps following him when he doesn't want her to, and sends him lots of love letters and (unwanted) presents. She is in love with him and and mistakenly believes he loves her back.
