Recap / Total Drama: "Twinning Isn't Everything"

Go To

The two teams are pit against each other in a game of "Doom Balloons", a water balloon fight with balloons filled with random items. Samey finally stands up to Amy and only one will make it past the campfire ceremony. Topher makes subtle comments on Chris' age. Dave tries to make a move on an uninterested Sky.

Tropes:

  • Batman Gambit: Samey knows Amy will take whatever Samey has... and uses it to get her to eat the poisonous fruit Jasmine saved her from eating last episode.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Amy at the beginning of the episode. Topher starts to show signs of this beneath his fanboy persona, subtly needling Chris about his age.
  • Blah, Blah, Blah: Amy cruelly ridicules Samey after the latter tried to stand up for herself and failed to get the team's support. Amy notes that she made a fool of herself and mockingly imitates her with the line, "Oh, I got the food and I'm the nice one! Blah blah blah!"
  • Bland-Name Product: Topher mentions going to "twert" something.
  • Call-Back: As usual, Chris refuses to admit his real age and is once again upset when a fan points it out.
  • Cheaters Never Prosper: Amy convinces enough people on her team to vote off Samey after blaming her for them losing the challenge. In the end, she's outgambitted by Samey and ends up being launched in the Cannon of Shame.
  • Chekhov's Gun: The poisonous fruit Jasmine told Samey to not eat in the last episode? At the end of this episode, Samey picks another one and tricks Amy into eating it.
  • Conspiracy Theorist: Shawn's old boss at a bakery, who said Bakers had been masters of disguise for centuries and built the pyramids. Shawn takes the second one of those with a grain of salt.
  • Crocodile Tears: When Samey stands up for herself during breakfast, Amy feigns hurt that her own sister would talk to her like that and throws herself in Scarlett's arms for a session of crying. It gains her the sympathy of the entire team (minus Jasmine), leaving Samey with little choice but to remove herself from the situation.
  • Crush Blush:
    • Jasmine and Shawn both have one when they meet up while foraging: Samey takes this as her cue to give them some space.
    • Sky blushes when she gets lost in thought from thinking about Dave in the confessional where she claims she's not letting him distract her.
  • A Day in the Limelight: The conflict between Amy and Samey is heavily focused here.
  • The Dog Bites Back: After years of offscreen and three straight episodes of abuse towards her sister, Amy finally gets what's coming to her.
  • Epic Fail: Amy, Jasmine, and Samey had the chance to win the challenge for their team by finding Shawn’s hiding area and planning to drop a ballon on him. However, Amy decides to bicker with her sister over the balloon, causing it to pop all over all three of the girls and inadvertently give team maskwak a comeback victory.
  • Frame-Up: Amy causes Pimâpotew Kinosewak to lose the challenge, but as always blames it on Samey. Except for Jasmine, who witnessed the event, Amy convinces the entire team of Samey's guilt and to vote her off. Samey counters her sister's slander by tricking Amy into eating a poisonous apple that causes her throat to swell up and her to lose her speech. Then Samey claims to be Amy and gets Amy removed from the island in her place.
  • Glad You Thought of It: Max boasts about his impractical idea of placing doom balloons on a stick to poke the opposition with to Scarlett. Scarlett feigns being impressed and vocally ponders the possibility of creating a blowpipe to shoot the doom balloons of the other team to pieces, thereby taking them out with their own weapons. As per her plan, Max immediately claims the idea as his own, allowing Scarlett to keep her cover for another day.
  • Humiliation Conga: Amy goes through this during the elimination ceremony. She's tricked into eating a manchineel fruit by Samey, which results in her getting a horrible allergic reaction, complete with facial swelling that renders her unable to speak properly. Her favorite bullying victim of a younger sister then convinces everyone that she's her and vice versa. She's then shot out of the Cannon of Shame with her failing to get anyone to realize that they're booting the wrong twin and the one person who is aware of the Twin Switch has No Sympathy for her.
  • Hypocritical Humor: The zombie-fearing weirdo thinks the Baker's theories are a bit nuts.
  • Impersonating the Evil Twin: "Oh, ignore her! She's just trying to get sympathy. Aren't you, Samey?"
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Amy gets outsmarted by the sister she's abused for years.
  • Leave the Two Lovebirds Alone: Seeing Shawn and Jasmine smiling at each other, Samey opts to step away.
  • The Load: Zigzagged with Dave. Talking to Sky and distracting her during the challenge alerts Max to their location and gives him the opportunity to pop Sky's balloons, eliminating her from the challenge. However, Dave manages to take out both Rodney and Topher before running out of balloons and getting hit himself. It should be noted that he and Shawn are the only members of Team Maskwak to eliminate any opposing players.
  • Never My Fault: Even though Amy caused her team to lose the challenge by trying to take the balloon from Samey and causing it to pop, Amy refuses to take any responsibility for her teams loss and completely blames Samey for it.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: Despite Jasmine being all confident and assured, she admits to Samey that she also has trouble making friends.
  • Only Friend: Jasmine becomes this to Samey, and Samey to her.
  • Out-Gambitted: Amy gets the votes to eliminate Samey. Thing is, Samey was well-aware of that would happen, which is why she was holding the manchineel in front of her.
  • Palm-Fist Tap: During a confessional, Amy calls Samey a Spare Amy and realizes a nickname even more cruel than "Samey" would be "Sparemy". She taps her palm with her fist as she declares that once she gets home, she's going to change the name on her sister's birth certificate.
  • Plot Allergy: Dave claims to be allergic to bee stings, tomatoes, weed, peanuts, flowers, mountain lion dander, and most fruit-flavored gums, but concedes that it's a suspicion and that he's never been officially tested for any of it. The claim that he's allergic to flowers is corroborated in "Mo' Monkey, Mo' Problems".
  • Plot Hole: Because Amy made herself look like the good twin and that Samey was the evil one (such as by telling their team that they lost due to Samey), there was no reason for the latter to act mean when pretending to be her at the elimination ceremony.
  • Pun-Based Title: The title is a play on the phrase "winning isn't everything".
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Samey tries to give Amy one in front of her teammates when she finally stands up for herself; however, Amy spins the situation around so that she would appear as the victim and Samey as the mean sister.
  • Saying Sound Effects Out Loud: Amy declares a "Loud Cough of Interruption" after Jasmine congratulates Samey for taking out Dave.
  • Scary Stinging Swarm: With a blowgun, Max pops two of the doom balloons Sky is holding. Both happen to be filled with bees, which immediately go after Sky.
  • Ship Tease: Dave and Sky with Sky showing her first signs of liking Dave back. Shawn and Jasmine also gets teased once again.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Among Max's hidden things is a a Necronomicon.
    • Shawn's method of camouflaging himself using his cake decorating skills is a reference to Peeta's camouflage in The Hunger Games.
    • While describing the reward, Chris references to the nursery rhyme "Mary Had a Little Lamb".
  • So Proud of You: Jasmine shows pride in Samey's ruse in her confessional.
  • Title Drop: By Samey during her confessional at the end of the episode.
  • Wham Shot: The rash on Samey's hand after Amy takes the manchineel, demonstrating that Samey has her own gambit in the works.
  • Wounded Gazelle Gambit: Amy tries this when Samey finally calls her out, bursting into tears. It has mixed results: Scarlett tries to comfort her, Rodney scolds Samey, Max just views it as jealousy, and Topher seems to care more about the drama of it than anything.

Amy Fake Crying

Amy manipulates the other contestants into thinking that she's the nice one by fake crying after her twin sister Samey stands up for herself, and it works quite well with her getting sympathy and Samey storming off in frustration.

How well does it match the trope?
