Recap / Total Drama: "Basic Straining"

Go To

Chef is left in charge of the next challenge, a brutal bootcamp where the last camper standing wins. Duncan and Courtney grow closer.

Tropes:

  • A Day in the Limelight: Chef takes over hosting duties for this episode.
  • A Death in the Limelight: Courtney gets a majority of the focus in this episode alongside Duncan… this is also the episode where she’s eliminated.
  • Bait-and-Switch Comment: Chef does a Suddenly Shouting variant to Lindsay when she is the first to quit.
Chef Hatchet: Listen here, you have nothing to be ashamed of. (into a megaphone) EXCEPT FOR BEING A LITTLE BABY AND LETTING YOUR TEAM DOWN!!!
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Harold rigs the vote at the end of the episode, getting Courtney eliminated to get back at Duncan.
Harold: (pries open the ballot box) You guys think you're so funny. Let's see how you like it when someone messes with your love life.
  • The Big Damn Kiss: Courtney and Duncan have one.
  • Big "WHAT?!": Courtney gives one when it's revealed that she's getting eliminated.
  • Boot Camp Episode: The challenge for this episode is surviving a boot camp ran by Chef Hatchet, with the last camper standing winning immunity for their team.
  • Cool and Unusual Punishment: Chef ends up giving Duncan solitary confinement in... the boathouse. Somehow, the pointy hooks, realistic fish models, and dripping water actually manage to unsettle Duncan enough to briefly regret annoying Chef.
  • Covered in Mud: Part of the challenge involves repeatedly running through a muddy obstacle course until everyone can complete it in under one minute.
  • Crowd Surfing: Gwen wins the challenge for the Screaming Gophers, for which they form a crowd around her and Owen lifts her up to shoulder level.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: Courtney getting sick from eating too much junk food is meant to represent a minor at a drinking party.
  • Drill Sergeant Nasty: Chef.
  • Enemy Mine: Both teams are seen enjoying the food that Duncan and Courtney stole from Chef's fridge.
  • Epic Fail: Heather somehow manages to get herself tangled in the swinging rope in the obstacle course part of the challenge.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Even Heather seems to be horrified at the prospect of Duncan being punished with one night of solitary confinement in the boathouse.
  • Extreme Omnivore: Unsurprisingly, Owen isn't too fussed about eating trash before the next part of the challenge.
  • Exact Words: Chef makes the campers write 300-word essays about how much they love him. When he picks up Duncan's, it reads, "I love Master Chief Hatchet, because he is very, very, very, very, very, very..."
Chef Hatchet: This is just one sentence with five pages of "verys" in between!
Duncan: It's 300 words exactly! You can count them if you want.
  • Gasshole: During the last part of the challenge, Owen farts during the challenge, and Heather deliberately drops out to get away from him.
  • Handshake Substitute: Geoff and Duncan fistbump when Courtney, despite her above-it-all attitude, leaves no doubt that's she's very much into Duncan.
  • Insistent Terminology: Chef forces the campers to call him "Master Chief" for the episode.
  • Karma Houdini: Harold tampers with the votes to eliminate Courtney as revenge against Duncan, and he doesn't face any immediate repercussions. However, it is subverted later on, first in the following episode when Harold himself gets eliminated, albeit for an unrelated reason, and after Courtney discovers Harold's scheme in "Haute Camp-ture", where she spends the episode hunting him down and eventually catches him.
  • Large Ham: Courtney's response to her elimination as she's being dragged off: "I do not concede! I do not concede! I was your only hope! I was a Counselor in Training!"
  • Laser-Guided Karma: During the last leg of the challenge, the last campers standing are hanging upside down on a tree. Owen farts, and Heather jumps down to get away from him, only for Owen to fall right on top of her when she gets on the ground.
  • Misplaced Retribution: Courtney gets eliminated by Harold, because of Duncan's bullying of him.
  • Mobile Shrubbery: Duncan and Courtney join forces to steal the good food only Chris and Chef have access to. They sneak their way over to the hosts' tent disguised as bushes to avoid detection.
  • Pendulum of Death: The contestants have to go underneath a pair of these in the obstacle course, which are tipped with axes.
  • Potty Failure: Invoked. Courtney thinks that the s'more-covered underwear Harold accidentally drops in front of her is actually covered in poop.
  • Pun-Based Title: The title is a play on the phrase "basic training".
  • Relationship Upgrade: Courtney and Duncan get one this episode.
  • Revenge by Proxy: When Harold has enough of Duncan, he rigs the vote to eliminate Duncan's girlfriend, Courtney, instead of Duncan himself.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Slasher Smile: Harold has a nasty one as he recalls rigging with the votes to get rid of Courtney.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: One of Chef's challenges was writing an essay on how much they love and admire him.
  • Tempting Fate: Owen and Geoff call the first part of the challenge (holding up a canoe above their heads) easy, only for Chef and Chris to be sitting on top of them, and for the challenge to go on well into the night.
  • Throat-Slitting Gesture: Duncan harasses Courtney and she openly questions why she thought he was nice. He slides his hand across his neck and makes a shushing sound while he glances at Geoff and Harold, communicating to her how important his delinquent image is to him and to not reveal an act of kindness he did earlier. Despite her annoyance, she goes along with it.
  • Tragic Keepsake: Courtney gets voted off just when her romance with Duncan deepens. He gives her a skull he carved from wood to remember him by, which she simultaneously questions and loves.
  • Tranquil Fury: When Duncan finally pushes Chef a bit too far, rather than blowing his cool, Chef sends the punk into solitary confinement in a very low tone of voice.
  • Villain Respect: Gwen gains Chef's respect for being the last camper standing.
  • Vomit Indiscretion Shot: After gorging herself on junk food against Bridgette's advice, Courtney is seen vomiting over her cabin's railing.
  • "Walk on the Wild Side" Episode: Bad boy Duncan convinces the uptight, rule-abiding Courtney to raid Chef's fridge and share the loot with both teams.
