Recap / Total Drama: "Are We There Yeti?"

Go To

The final four campers are stranded in the woods by chef and divided, boys against girls.

Tropes:

  • Actually a Good Idea: Heather admits in the confessional that the boys using the river as navigation was brilliant idea.
Heather: (impressed) Well played boys, well played.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Chef gets to be the host of this episode.
  • Ambiguous Situation: So did Chef eliminate Duncan himself or was he just announcing the result of the contestants' vote, meaning the girls likely voted for him over Owen for being a bigger threat? If the former was the case, did Chef really choose Duncan out of his greater dislike of him just because he hosted this episode or did he do so to become the deciding vote because the contestants' vote ended in a tie?
  • Arbitrary Skepticism: Every camper but Owen doesn't believe in Sasquatchanakwa at first despite seeing Eva's encounter with him in No Pain, no Game.
  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: When Gwen is complaining about the challenge in the confessional, she has this to say:
Gwen: They left us in the woods, alone, again, with Heather.
  • Bigfoot, Sasquatch, and Yeti: The Sasquatchanakwa that's been in the background for a few episodes, but becomes a plot point in this episode.
  • Brick Joke: An episode after Owen says that he hid a stash of junk food from the others, Chef reveals at the end of the episode that he was going to take some of said snacks (before the contestants arrived back at camp).
  • By the Lights of Their Eyes: This occurs when everybody is stuck in the cave, including the bats and Sasquatchanakwa.
  • Caught in a Snare: Gwen and Heather use a snare trap baited with an energy bar to steal bug repellant off Duncan and Owen. Of course, it's Owen who gets caught and Duncan has to cut him free before he can go after the girls to repay them in kind.
  • Comically Missing the Point: After losing the challenge for himself and Duncan, Owen in the confessional says that Duncan is mad at him...that he didn't save him a sticky bun.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • The contestants have to camp in the woods again, like in "The Sucky Outdoors".
    • Owen mentions the cliff dive he did back in "Not So Happy Campers Part 2".
    • Chef is in charge of this episode, more so than he was back in "Basic Straining".
    • The battle of the sexes theme was first used back in "Brunch of Disgustingness".
    • Mr. Coconut is briefly seen in the opening as Chef is cutting him in half. This will be the first in a long line of cameos he'll be getting.
    • Chris tries reading Gwen’s Secret Diary from “Not Quite Famous”.
  • Dynamic Entry: Chef arrives at where the contestants were dumped at the beginning of the episode from a ladder on a helicopter.
  • Enemy Mine: As Gwen points out (and which Heather ultimately agrees to): for as much as they hate each other, they're going to have to work together if they want any actual chance of beating Owen and Duncan.
  • Escalating War: The teams get into some increasingly outlandish pranks on each other in order to steal some of each others stuff. This ends after boys take all of the girls stuff.
  • False Reassurance: When asked whether a grizzly bear will be in the woods to threaten them, Chef says that they won't have to worry about bears, because of Sasquatchanakwa being their primary threat instead.
  • Girls vs. Boys Plot: How Chef pairs the four remaining campers for his survival challenge.
  • Handshake Substitute: Gwen and Duncan fistbump as a parting gesture when Duncan gets eliminated.
  • Honey Trap: Heather convinces Gwen to pull a non-lethal variant on the guys.
  • Kidnapped While Sleeping: The Final Four awaken in their bunk beds in the middle of the forest. This is Chef's doing and he joins them soon after by helicopter to give them duffel bags with tools to make it back to camp. When he leaves to let the campers get on with the challenge, he takes the bunk beds with him.
  • Last of His Kind: Duncan is the final member of the Killer Bass to be eliminated.
  • The Nicknamer: When giving the contestants their stuff at the beginning of the episode, Chef calls Duncan and Owen "delinquent and chubby", and calls Gwen and Heather "grim and grimmer".
  • Not So Above It All: Gwen is more than happy to partake in Heather's Honey Trap plan to get the stuff they need.
  • Overly Long Gag: The unmasking gag of either Sasquatchanakwa or Chef as Duncan is being taken away from the island on the Boat of Losers.
  • Pit Trap: Duncan and Owen use a pit trap covered with twigs to steal the compass off Gwen and Heather.
  • Pun-Based Title: The title is a play on the phrase "Are we there yet?".
  • Secret Diary: Notwithstanding his earlier disapproval of Gwen's diary being read on camera, Chef has no qualms about reading it himself. He had planned a day of relaxation that among other activities included finishing Gwen's diary, but because the contestants return much earlier than intended, he doesn't get around to it.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Chef calls Gwen and Heather "Grim and Grimmer".
    • When Owen is in the confessional talking about jumping off the 1000-foot high cliff, he says he is the "king of the world".
  • Slasher Smile: Chef does one before eliminating Duncan.
  • Swallowed a Fly: Chef gets himself some me-time, part of which he spends on singing and playing the harp. In the middle of his melodious performance, a fly enters his mouth. Chef subsequently takes his time working up the mucus and spit to form a substantial blob around the fly to spit it out more easily.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Bitter enemies Heather and Gwen are forced to work together yet again for this challenge.
  • Wounded Gazelle Gambit: Duncan fakes begging so that he could swipe Chef's Night-Vision Goggles.
  • Written-In Absence: This is the only episode that Chris doesn't appear in because, according to Chef, he's off hosting some awards show.
