Recap / Total Drama: "African Lying Safari"

Go To

The contestants' next destination is the Serengeti Plains of Tanzania. Their task is to hunt a feral Ezekiel, armed only with a few tranquiliser balls. Thanks to Sierra's "love tea", Cody spends the entire challenge in a semi-coma, carried around by Sierra. Alejandro and Heather form a temporary alliance, teaming up to vote out Duncan.

Tropes:

  • "Balls" Gag: As part of the song "Wake Up", Alejandro mocks Heather for not being able to find her balls... as in, the tranquilizer balls he lifted from her earlier.
  • Bits of Me Keep Passing Out: Duncan, Heather, Alejandro and Sierra accidentally tranquilize each other. To add insult to injury, Chris then forces them to sing about it.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • We last saw Chris as bald in his Humiliation Conga in Actions "Aftermath IV: Who Want To Pick A Millionaire?".
    • Chef is also seen facing the consequences of having an illegal alliance with Blaineley in the previous episode.
  • The Chew Toy: Cody is on the receiving end of a lot of pain in this episode, due to being paralysed by Sierra's love tea.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: When the baboon that kidnapped Cody summons reinforcements, Sierra beats them up in seconds.
  • Disney Acid Sequence: Cody hallucinates after being force-fed Sierra's love tea, seeing her as a Polar Bear.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Heather is visibly horrified when Alejandro whispers his plan to her to use Duncan as live bait to lure out Ezekiel. She even says in a confessional that even she isn't that ruthless.
  • Foregone Conclusion: Duncan was the only remaining contestant without an alliance. As he says, he saw being eliminated coming.
  • Gambit Roulette: Alejandro's plan to get Duncan eliminated relies heavily on the fact that Duncan would be attacked by Ezekiel, that Duncan would go to the exact waterhole that Ezekiel would be in, and that Sierra would have no tranquiliser balls left.
  • Get A Hold Of Yourself Man: Heather runs for her life from a lion after discovering that Alejandro stole her tranquilizer balls. She bumps into Sierra and rambles out her troubles, unaware the lion's no longer on her tail. Sierra has her own problem of needing to get Cody safely down from a tree, so she slaps Heather before the ramble takes up too much time and insists that Cody is their primary concern.
  • Groin Attack: Chef is on the receiving end of many of these in the first part of the challenge.
  • Maniac Monkeys: The baboons that kidnapped Cody are represented as these.
  • Mighty Roar: Courtesy of the lion that almost attacks Heather.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: Duncan finds himself on the receiving end of a beatdown at the hands of Ezekiel: he gets his chest scratched and his head relentlessly pounded.
  • Not-So-Innocent Whistle: Chris reads out the votes during the elimination ceremony. Sierra has one vote against her. She knows Cody has been consistently voting against her, so it's no question he's behind it this time to. She glares at him while he whistles fake-innocently.
  • Oh, Crap!: In The Teaser, Chef in response to Chris talking about how he will punish him for his illegal alliance with Blaineley.
  • Pop-Culture Pun Episode Title: The title is a play on the Canadian safari park African Lion Safari.
  • Quicksand Sucks: While they have their eyes and thoughts focused on tracking down Ezekiel, Duncan and Alejandro fail to realize timely that they've come to a standstill in quicksand. Duncan is taken aback because he expected to meet death in the mud or the gutter, but not in quicksand. Alejandro, being a little closer to the edge, gets his hands on a stick and just as fortunately, Ezekiel drops by. With a little prompting, Alejandro gets Ezekiel to bite the stick and drag the two of them out. Later that day, Duncan gets eliminated and booted off the plane. He lands in another pit of quicksand, right next to a lion that proceeds to maul him.
  • Rhino Rampage: Averted, a rhinoceros simply looks at Sierra before she runs off extremely quickly. The rhino is otherwise seen as very calm, and confused by what Sierra just did.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Single-Episode Handicap: Or rather, half an episode handicap. Cody is paralysed by the love tea that Sierra force fed him.
  • Sleep Cute: During the hunt, Alejandro tricks Ezekiel into attacking Duncan to have an easy shot at him. The moment they get jointly hit with the tranquilizer balls, they fall asleep snuggling.
  • Speak in Unison: Heather and Alejandro periodically talk in sync, sometimes simultaneously denying they're in love, other times finding they have the same strategic thoughts. They get very annoyed each time it happens, but it amuses the likes of Chris and Duncan because it affirms that despite their protests, they are a great fit for each other.
  • Twitchy Eye: Cody's left eye twitches from the sight of Sierra going mad with rage against and making short work of the baboons that have abducted him.
