Recap / Total Drama: "A Blast From the Past"

Go To

The campers are challenged to pick up dueling sticks and battle the other team as they cross the dock. Amy returns to get her revenge. Shawn's zombie phobia nearly gets him eliminated and ruins his relationship with Jasmine.

Tropes:

  • Air Quotes: During a confessional, Jasmine notes that Shawn's too much of a survival specialist to get "lost" in the woods, performing air quotes to denote her worry something truly bad happened to him.
  • Ambiguous Situation:
    • Does Amy's return to the island and being eliminated alongside Samey mean that she was allowed to return to the competition, if briefly? Or did she just come back to the island but never officially returned to the game?
    • Was Samey properly voted out, with Amy gotten rid of alongside her because Chris couldn't tell which one was Samey? Or was Samey (and by extension Amy) disqualified by Chris to prevent the sisters from posing as each other and therefore tampering with elimination results again?
  • Book on the Head: Topher mentions he has training balancing books on his head from his on-camera poise class.
  • Bland-Name Product: Slowtox, an obvious parody of Botox.
  • Brains Versus Brawn: A case of this happens between Sky going against Scarlet. Thanks to her tactics, it's Scarlett who wins after Sky swings too hard and falls in the water as Scarlett moves away.
  • Cat Fight: Amy returns to the island and is pissed that Samey got her eliminated. She seeks out her sister and twice gets into a fight with her that includes petty insults, screaming, hair-pulling, and wrestling.
  • Danger Takes A Back Seat: A sea monster earlier shown to arrive at and roam the island hides in the back of Chef's jeep when he looks for Shawn. The monster does not attack either, because it's actually Amy and she only seeks to harm Samey.
  • Declarative Finger: Sky puts her finger in the air and sways it along with a little head bob when she vows vengeance on Scarlett for harming Ella with an electric eel.
  • Determinator: Amy swam all the way back to the island to get revenge on her sister.
  • Downer Ending: The end of Samey's character arc is this. She's eliminated from the competition alongside her Big Sister Bully, receives no reward money, will have to spend the next few years of her life sharing a home with her shrew of a twin sister, who shows zero signs of toning down her impertinence towards her, and the Only Friend she's ever made forgets about her after she's eliminated.
  • Everybody Knew Already: Subverted. Scarlett knew it was Samey the whole time and assumed that everybody else did, too.
  • Everyone Has Standards:
    • Topher may be a narcissistic and vain JerkAss, but even he seemed genuinely concerned for Ella when Max shocked her and knocked her into the water.
    • Dave took advantage of Shawn's paranoia to try to win the challenge for his team, but he feels genuinely bad when his plan causes Shawn to actually attack Jasmine and put a rift in their relationship.
  • Eye Am Watching You: After Scuba Bear attacks Sugar and Samey, it turns to both teams each, points at its own eyes, then at them. Once they got the message that Scuba Bear is a threat during the challenge, it goes back in hiding underwater.
  • Hand Gagging: Ella is forbidden from singing for the rest of the competition or she'll be removed at Chris's discretion as host. Sugar wants to get rid of Ella, so she encourages her to change his mind with a song. Sky quickly places her hand over Ella's mouth to stop her from getting herself eliminated.
  • Hand Rubbing: Max puts his palms together and hunches a little when the idea hits him to sabotage the dueling sticks of the other team. It draws Chris's attention and prompts him to specify that messing with the other team's sticks results in the challenge automatically being lost.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard:
    • In her anger at Scarlett, Sky swung her stick forward too hard and fell in the water.
    • Chris also falls victim of this, when he throws his drink at the Scuba Bear to make him attack Ella.
  • Love Letter Lunacy: Dave takes a deep breath, tells Sky that he likes her, and asks if she likes him too. Sky is dismayed he would go about it like this, because as she explains, one is supposed to write "I like you" on a note and give it to a friend of the addressee. Then said friend will pass it on, but the teacher will notice, confiscate the note, and read it out loud in class. Sky's confused Dave doesn't know this is how it goes.
  • Nasal Trauma: Max isn't paying attention and walks into Topher when he suddenly stops. It's his nose which takes the brunt of the impact.
  • Nonchalant Dodge: When Sky comes running and gunning for her, all Scarlett does is timely duck backwards on her knee. Sky swings her jousting baton with full force, loses balance when she hits nothing, and falls into the water. Scarlett thereby scores a point for her team, while Sky returns empty-handed.
  • Non Sequitur, *Thud*: After being shocked by an electric eel, Ella crawls out of the water a tad loopy and asks if Chris knows where she can find the white rabbit.
  • Perpetual Smiler: Chris ends up with a constant smile on his face as a result of Slowtox injections. He keeps smiling even when he's screaming at the sight of Scuba Bear about to attack him.
  • Punctuated! For! Emphasis!: When Sugar sees Ella get electrocuted she declares this the "Best. Day. Ever." in the confessional.
  • Rescue Romance: Subverted. Dave pulls Ella out of the water after she gets electrocuted and retrieves her shoe for her. Ella then develops a crush on Dave, but it's primarily because he put her shoe back on her like in Cinderella more than because he saved her life.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: Amy, after what Samey did to her in "Twinning Isn't Everything".
  • Roses Are Red, Violets Are Blue...: Sugar responds to Ella's poetry with some of her own.
    Roses are red
    Manure is brown
    GET OUT OF MY FACE!
  • Shout-Out:
  • Suddenly Shouting: Sugar answers Ella's pushy poem with one of her own. The two opening lines are a playful take on "Roses Are Red, Violets Are Blue..." and she switches out the two closing lines with an aggressive "GET OUT MY FACE!".
  • Twitchy Eye: Scarlett's left eye gets twitchy when Max calls her good enough to become his "sidekick". Up until that point, she had viewed their surface teamwork to be a partnership.
  • The Unsmile: Chris's expression throughout the episode is a big and rather terrifying Slasher Smile that remains permanent due to the Slowtox he putted on his face to make himself look younger. Even when he's about to be attacked and mauled by Scuba Bear he's still got that big and terrifying smile on his face.
  • Worf Had the Flu: Jasmine fails both times she competes in the challenge. The first time, Jasmine was distracted by her concern for Shawn's well-being, giving Dave the chance to knock her off the platform. The second time, she was actually prepared to throw that turn, unaware that Shawn thought she was a zombie and get vicious during the challenge.
