Recap / Thundercats 1985 S 01 E 03 Berbils

Go To

The Thundercats make their first new friends on Third Earth — a pacifist race of farmers and builders that look like small, robotic Teddy bears called the Ro-Bear Berbils. After a few battles helping their new allies protect their village, the Berbils return the favor by promising to help their new neighbors build the lair Tygra has designed. Everybody wins! (Well, except Mumm-Ra...)

This episode provides examples of:

  • Barrier Warrior: This is the first time Lion-O uses the Sword of Omens' shield-generating power.
  • Buried Alive: The Thundercats would have been buried alive in their spaceship if Panthro hadn't been able to dig them out with the Thundertank.
Panthero: Blasted rocks buried the spaceship too!
  • Fantastic Fruits and Vegetables: The Berbils grow everything from "meat fruit" to "candy fruit."
  • Honor Before Reason: The Berbils' strategy for dealing with the Trollogs doesn't make much sense to Lion-O.
Lion-O: Those stun darts aren't doing much good.
Ro-Bear Bill: No, they never do.
Lion-O: Then why do you use them?
Ro-Bear Bill: Because we would not want to hurt anyone.
Lion-O: Then... why don't you just let the Trollogs march into the village and take your Ro-Bear Berbil fruit?
Ro-Bear Bill: And behave like cowards?
  • New Superpower: Lion-O learns he can summon the Sword of Omens to him and use it to fly.
  • Noisy Nature: Discussed.
Snarf: Go ahead and laugh, but I keep hearing things, Lion-O.
[Glowing eyes watching them from the bushes]
Lion-O: Naturally. The jungle is teaming with life, and all of them is noisy.
  • Now, Let Me Carry You: Since the Thundercats scared the Giantors away from raiding their village for good, the Berbils insist on helping them build their home.
  • Pit Trap: Lion-O falls into one the Berbils set to protect their home.
  • Sympathy for the Devil: The Berbils feel sorry for the Trollogs, since they know the Giantors force them to raid their village.
  • Take a Third Option: The Berbils don't want the Trollogs to steal their food, of course, but they also don't want to hurt them because they know it's not their fault. Lion-O uses his sword's shield power to ward them off without hurting anyone. (Of course, that's only a temporary solution...)
  • Watch the Paint Job: When their camp starts getting buried under an avalanche of boulders, Panthro's highest priority is protecting his new Thundertank.
Panthro: I'm not leaving my baby alone.
