One stormy night, Tan Hi and her brother Tan Kou, protectors of the Tengyouken, are pursued by the evil Onyx Demon clan. Although the clan's leader, Betsu Ten Gai, manages to kill Kou and retrieve the sword's hilt, Hi manages to escape off a cliff. Meanwhile, a travelling swordsman named Syou Fu Kan comes across an umbrella covering a Buddha statue, where a peculiar man informs him that taking the umbrella will require him to do a good favor in return. As Syou Fu Kan returns on his journey, he encounters Hi as she escapes from Onyx Demon members, prompting him to step in to protect her. After bringing Hi back to the man he met earlier, Fukan is confronted by the Onyx Demons' Zan Kyou, who attacks Fukan after the mysterious man sprays him with smoke making him believe he is actually Hi. After Syou Fu Kan defeats him in battle, Zan Kyou severs his own head and sends it to Betsu Ten Gai, who identifies the mysterious man as the Enigmatic Gale.
Tropes:
- Bare-Handed Blade Block: Instead of catching the blade directly, Syou Fu Kan blocks the arm and redirects it away for an elbow counterattack to Zan Kyou on his first attempted attack.
- Chekhov's Skill: He tricks Zan Kyou (who wants to kill Tan Hi) into fighting Sho Fukan by messing with his perception via smoke and make him think that he's Tan Hi.
- Foreshadowing: When Betsutengai absorbing memories of his decreasd comrades, Zan Kyou's head, he calls him "Enigmatic Gale". In which would foreshadowing true role in the near future.
- Heroic Sacrifice: Tan Kou sacrifice himself in order for his sister to escape with piece other half of Tengyouken.
- Humble Hero: He saves Tan Hi and tells the Enigmatic Gale that it was the Buddha that saved her.
- Off with His Head!: Zan Kyou beheads himself after learning the true name of the heroes so that his master can read his severed head's memories
- Pursued Protagonist: Tan Hi along with her brother, Tan Kou were pursued by Genkishu as they wanted to obtain the piece of the holy sword, Tengyouken.
- Smoking Is Cool: He uses this on Zan Kyou thinking Syou Fu Kan was Tan Hi.
- Starter Villain: The first villain that the heroes fight (and ultimately gets them involved with taking on the Onyx Demons).
