Recap / 3Below S2 E3 "Dogfight Days of Summer"

Go To

Summer is hot and boring, so everyone is at the Tarron house because they're the only people with a pool. Meanwhile, Morando is gearing up for an invasion of Earth, and Varvatos tries to inform the authorities.

Tropes in this episode:

  • Arbitrary Skepticism: Justified, as while Detective Scott admits he should be a little more open-minded since the Troll invasion, he's also been subjected to many crazy theories about what might be next and thus doesn't take the warning of alien invasion seriously without any proof.
  • Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!: The plan to stop Morando almost fails when the residents of Arcadia abandon Krel's 'Dogfight' game en masse in favor of the Sushi Go 2 game being released right that second.
  • Conservation of Ninjutsu: The last drone piloted by Eli Pepperjack lasts much longer than any other drone in the fight. Somewhat justified in that shooting at a thousand tiny targets still gives you a decent chance to hit something, but shooting at one tiny target is an exercise in frustration. Plus, Eli had been getting progressively better with each drone he'd lost just like real life gamers.
  • Kneel Before Frodo: Subverted in that Aja, Krel, Steve, Eli, Toby, Varvatos, and Zadra are the ones bowing before the citizens of Akiridion-5 after defeating Morando.
  • Scoring Points: Blink And You'll Miss It, but apparently AAARRRGGHH!!! has a high score of 809,790,353 on Sushi Go. For reference, Toby himself has the next highest score of 5,433.
  • Shout-Out: The broad premise of "putting teenagers in control of fighting starships through a video game as a last-ditch effort to aid your galactic war" is essentially a updated version of The Last Starfighter (which had the video game take form of a arcade, while here it is a mobile app).
  • Suspiciously Small Army: At the start of the episode, Morando's invasion force for Earth is called an "armada" and "fleet". However, Morando's flagship is the only ship ever shown onscreen with nary a mention of any other ships one would expect to have in a fleet.
  • This Cannot Be!: Morando is left utterly astonished that his flagship was downed with parking drones.
  • Zerg Rush: Basically the plan to down Morando's flagship: swarm it with tiny and individually weak parking drones.
