Hay is for (iron) horses.

Donald and Douglas are chuffing down the line with a goods train. Trevor struggles with a cart of hay, which gets stuck on a crossing after one of the wheels of the cart falls off. Donald sees the cart, but they can't stop, and Donald hits the cart but blames Douglas. The twins refuse to speak to each other, and when The Fat Controller needs an engine to help Duck at the shunting yards, Donald jumps at the opportunity.

At first, Donald enjoys working with Duck, but eventually, things start to go wrong, as Duck doesn't understand Donald and Douglas' way of working. Meanwhile, Douglas is doing work on his own, and is beginning to miss Donald. The next day, Donald is in a bad mood and was not looking where he is going, and breaks through some buffers and into a ditch.

Duck, knowing that he's not strong enough to get Donald back on the rails, hurries to get help from Douglas. Douglas pulls Donald back on the rails, and the twins make up in the end and are glad to be back together.

Tropes featured in the episode:

  • Added Alliterative Appeal: Donald and Douglas are described in the beginning as "practical, peppery, and proud".
  • Alliterative Title: Twin Trouble.
  • An Aesop: Some problems are best solved if you work together.
  • Argument of Contradictions:
    Donald: Stop bein' pushy!
    Douglas: Don't call ME pushy!
Donald: Ye shouldnae 'ave pushed me inna da cart!
    Douglas: YE pulled ME, y'mean!
    Donald: Didnae!
    Douglas: Did!
    Donald: DID NOT!
    Douglas: DID TOO!
  • Can't Live with Them, Can't Live Without Them: Subverted. Donald gives Duck shit for not moving the trucks onto the right line saing "Douglas would have known what I meant", whilst Douglas was doing his work alone until he starts to miss Donald. That all lasted until Donald demanded an apology from him and now Douglas is cross with him again.
    • Played straight in the end however. Duck barely has time to mention Donald's accident before a shocked Douglas rushes to his aid.
  • "Could Have Avoided This!" Plot: Donald's driver says that the ditch accident could have been avoided if he was working with Douglas. Donald knows that his driver is right.
Donald's Driver: This wouldn't have happened if you were working with Douglas!
  • Feud Episode: Donald and Douglas blame each other for the accident, causing both of them to refuse to work alongside each other.
  • Here We Go Again!: In the end, Donald and Douglas begin to disagree over who's sorry for the accident, but Duck stops them.
  • Not Even Bothering with the Accent:
    • Alec Baldwin in the U.S. version doesn't give the Scottish twins Scottish accents.
    • Amusingly inverted when Michael Angelis in the UK version still uses a Scottish brogue when he says, "Arrg-ued Douglas".
  • Not This One, That One: Donald works with Duck after a falling-out with Douglas. At first, Donald enjoys working with Duck, but after a while, things start to go wrong.
Donald: Did you shunt those trucks onto the other line?
Duck: You said you wanted them on the other line!
Donald: Not that other line, the other other line! Douglas would have known what I meant.
  • Ominous Pipe Organ: Heard when Donald crashes into the ditch.
  • Ordered Apology: What Donald demands from Douglas.
  • A Tragedy of Impulsiveness: Donald gets himself in a bad mood when he yells at Douglas about whether or not the latter wants to apologize to him. He later in the morning did not watch out for himself and falls into a ditch.
  • Refuse to Rescue the Disliked: Subverted. The minute Duck puffs in shouting that Donald is in trouble, Douglas immediately rushed off to save him.
  • Twin Brother Instinct: Subverted, this time it's Douglas, the younger twin's instinct which kicks in.
    Duck: Donald's in trouble!
Douglas: Donald in trouble!? I'm on my way!
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Donald's driver calls out Donald for the fact that him falling into a ditch wouldn't have happened if he was working with Douglas.
