You'd think he'd be more careful of coal.

Percy is exhausted, but the other engines are quite unsympathetic. After a long, arduous day of collecting freight from all over the island, Percy returns to Tidmouth Sheds very dirty, much to the amusement of the others. Despite this, the Fat Controller praises Percy for his work and tells him to get some rest.

The next day, Percy travels to the coal mine and is asked to help dislodge some trucks stuck on a piece of mining equipment at the mine shaft entrance. Percy gives them a good shove to get them moving, but he pushes the trucks too hard. The trucks break away and run uncontrollably down into the mine, eventually derailing on a curve and taking out a support beam, which triggers a cave-in and then an avalanche. The evacuation alarm goes out, and Percy rushes away as the ground beneath his track starts to give out.

With the line behind him already buried in rock, Percy takes refuge underneath a canvas barrier just before it gets buried by rubble itself. He and his crew are safe, but the miners fear the worst and rush to dig them out. As a reward, Percy is sent to be repainted, something he definitely doesn't mind being put upon him.

Tropes featured in the episode:

  • Butt-Monkey: Percy becomes the butt of jokes to the other engines after realizing how overworked he is. However, they soon felt sorry for him after the mine accident.
  • Easily Forgiven: Funnily enough, Sir Topham Hatt wasn't mad at all with Percy for destroying his mine.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Before Percy shoves the trucks into the mine, the narrator mentions a canvas barrier used to protect his line from loose rocks. This is exactly what saves Percy from the avalanche ensuing later.
  • The Freelance Shame Squad: Pretty much how the other engines treated Percy. Even Annie and Clarabel take shots at him in the beginning of the episode:
"Percy's been put upon, put upon, put upon. Percy's been put upon, poor ol' Percy."
  • Karmic Death: The troublesome trucks make fun of Percy for being dirty, but the next day when Percy shunts nine of them to the mine shaft, he shoves them so hard they cause an explosion.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Percy bumps the trucks too hard, causing them to crash into the support beam which lead to the mine collapsing.
  • No Sympathy: Percy receives this from everyone but the Fat Controller, but after the incident with the mine, they were all sorry for teasing him.
  • Not So Above It All: Duck also joins in teasing Percy whilst whistling.
  • So Proud of You: The Fat Controller to Percy, once after his "put-upon" day and again after the mine collapse.
  • Third-Person Person: After Annie and Clarabel sing a song at Percy's expense, he angrily says, "Percy IS being put upon!".
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: After Percy's ordeal throughout the entire episode, Percy is rewarded with a new coat of paint.

Put Upon Percy

Percy is feeling "put upon" with too much work, and it shows with this montage.
