Gordon is still upset that Edward no longer lives at Tidmouth Sheds, and becomes rude to Nia for moving in. But when Henry says that the Fat Controller has approved of him moving to stay at Vicarstown Sheds, Gordon throws a paranoid tantrum and decides to do things differently in protest because the Fat Controller is changing things.

Gordon leaves his express to find Edward and ask if he will move back to Tidmouth Sheds since Henry is leaving. Edward tells Gordon that he is already happy staying at Wellsworth. The Fat Controller finds Gordon and, despite his changes causing Gordon to have been upset about them, scolds Gordon for his actions and sends him back to the sheds in disgrace, which Gordon does so without hesitation. That night, while sleeping in the shed backwards, Gordon dreams about the whole railway changing around him in very silly ways. Nia approaches Gordon and sympathises with him, noting that she is far away from her old railway and friends but always remembers that if her old friends are still her friends, so will Edward and Henry.

The next morning, Nia gets Gordon to go out of the sheds to pull the Express. Gordon tries to rush, but Nia stops him just in time before he almost falls into the turntable well. When Gordon gets on the turntable, he thanks her and apologises to her for being rude, hoping they can be friends. Nia hopes they can also be friends with the other new engine going to live at Tidmouth Sheds, which surprises Gordon so much that he rushes away.

Tropes:

  • Aesop Amnesia: Played for laughs, mere seconds after having learned a lesson on change, Gordon freaks out over a new engine sleeping in Henry's berth (Rebecca).
  • Ambiguous Situation: It is unknown why Henry chose to move to Vicarstown. He is not even given a proper farewell. That hasn’t stopped some fans from doing their own interpretations on what may have influenced him to move to his new home in Vicarstown.
  • An Aesop: Sometimes, it takes a little while to get used to change.
  • Audience Surrogate: In this episode, Gordon is representing the Periphery Demographic who dislike the changes being made to the show, namely Nia replacing Edward and (in the next episode) Rebecca replacing Henry in the main cast.
  • Big "NO!": Gordon screams "NOOOOOOO!" at the end of the episode when Nia informs him of a new engine sleeping Henry's empty berth (who later turns out to be Rebecca).
    • He also screams "NOOOOO!" during his fantasy sequence.
  • Big "WHAT?!": Gordon screams "WHAT?!?" (complete with a lengthy echo) when Henry informs him that Sir Topham Hatt has approved of the latter's move to Vicarstown.
  • Call-Back: Edward's moving to Wellsworth in "A Shed for Edward" allows Nia to move into his empty berth at Tidmouth Sheds.
  • Continuity Nod: In the And Knowing Is Half the Battle segment, Thomas recalls the events of "Engine of the Future".
  • Control Freak: Gordon in this episode, who protests to Sir Topham Hatt and begs for Edward and Henry to move back.
  • Dislikes the New Guy: Gordon initially treats Nia rudely due to her taking Edward's place.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: Gordon was rude to Nia at first, but after some honest discussion, they become friends.
  • Foreshadowing: Nia's comment on a new engine sleeping in Henry's berth foreshadows Rebecca moving to Tidmouth Sheds in the next episode, "Confusion Without Delay".
  • Go to Your Room!: A railway variant. The Fat Controller tells a sulky Gordon to either pull the Express or go to his shed. He chooses the latter.
  • Here We Go Again!: When Nia mentions about a new engine coming to Sodor, Gordon overreacts again.
  • Imagine Spot: Gordon has a rather trippy one where the railway is drastically different: the tracks are rainbow-colored, every engine is pulling the wrong train, and the whole railway is pretty much a rollercoaster.
  • Jerkass: Gordon acts like this to Nia due to her replacing Edward in the sheds. They eventually become friends though.
  • Nothing Is the Same Anymore: In-universe, in Gordon's eyes, at least. Gordon views Nia as a Replacement Scrappy.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Gordon is usually bossy and snooty, but in this episode, he is genuinely depressed at Edward and Henry leaving, to the point where he has a tantrum. This is probably the saddest he has ever been since The Railway Series story, "Tenders for Henry". It is only some honest communication with Nia that cheers him up.
  • Ordered Apology: Sir Topham Hatt demands Gordon to apologize to Nia for being mean to her at Knapford.
  • Put on a Bus: Henry, who is transferred to Vicarstown Sheds.
  • Sixth Ranger: Nia joins the main cast as of this episode, replacing Edward.
  • Take That, Audience!: Downplayed. While the Aesop can be generally interpreted as "change isn't always bad", it can also be interpreted as addressing the fandom's concerns about the show's overhaul. Some fans interpret the message as Mattel understanding their feelings, but at the same time, making it clear that they only care about reclaiming the market share they lost to PAW Patrol.
  • Tempting Fate: Gordon attempts to do a huge protest due to Edward and Henry leaving the sheds. This causes him to get punished.
  • Title Drop: Gordon talks about staying in the sheds forever and ever.
  • Token Minority: Nia, who is voiced by Yvonne Grundy (both of whom are Kenyan), officially joins the main cast in this episode.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Despite how he treats Edward and Henry in the past, Gordon couldn't take it when they were moving away from him due to them being transferred to other parts of Sodor.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: The Fat Controller scolds Gordon for his temper tantrum:
The Fat Controller: You are usually one of my most sensible engines, Gordon, but today you are being very silly indeed! If you're not going to pull the Express then you can go back to your shed.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: Gordon's reaction to his dream where the railway undergoes some drastic "changes".
Gordon: *riding down a rollercoaster track* This is RIDICULOUUUUUUUUUUUUSSSS!!!!
