"These kids were connected by their secrets, connected, and forever changed...Even the ones that don't like each other very much, there's a bond. They show up for each other."

We meet Ani (Grace Saif), a new student of Liberty High. She's currently sat in an interrogation room in a police station, talking. She's alone. Ani is going to be the narrator for the third season of 13 Reasons Why.

Ani lives with her mother who works as an in home carer. They live in a house owned by the Walkers, specifically Nora Walker. Ani's mother is caring for Nora's father, who is elderly and in ill health. Also living in the house is Bryce. Bryce's parents have since separated and Bryce has even less to do with his father than previously seen in other seasons. Bryce is now attending Hillcrest Academy after the trial that saw him walk free of rape against several girls at Liberty High School, including Hannah Baker.

Ani is very open about not being into pretending to be the 'new shy girl'. Instead, she is happy to talk and befriend most of the main characters. We see small flashbacks of various interactions with characters that Ani promises to elaborate on later, along with a promise to spill all the truth.

Flashback to shortly after the Spring Fling dance from the end of season 2. Tyler Down (Devin Druid) is stood outside of the school gym, holding an arsenal of weapons. He is planning on shooting up the school in revenge for the years of torment and bullying he's had to endure, as well as the brutal assault he suffered at the hands of Montgomery 'Monty' de la Cruz. However, Clay Jensen (Dylan Minnette) got to him in time to talk him down. Clay sent Tyler away with Tony Padilla (Christian Navarro) so he could get rid of Tyler's weapons. They did this successfully but obviously Tyler is still very much a broken person. Clay and Tony come up with a plan that themselves and a specially picked group of friends (the people involved in the Hannah Baker situation) as well as some of Tyler's friends like Cyrus and Mackenzie, would cover up what really happened and help Tyler through his trauma.

The season begins eight months after Spring Fling. Tyler is barely keeping it together and the rest of the group aren't faring much better. Jessica (Alisha Boe) has been appointed as school president and is accused of inducing a riot at the Homecoming game between Hillcrest and Liberty High by Principal Bolan (Steven Weber). The riot involved violence that ended up with injuries to star players Zach Dempsey (Ross Butler) and Monty. Jessica is not bothered about being moaned at by the Principal over the riot but she does insist that it didn't have anything to do with Bryce.

Meanwhile, Tyler has been taking photos of himself every day in the exact same spot. Each photograph is shirtless and shows the extensive bruises and injuries he endured after being assaulted by Monty and his friends.

Jessica and Alex are not together in a relationship any more. Their friendship is bordering between friendly and completely the opposite. Alex is taking medication but it's not clear why and he's also working out a lot.

During school, Clay is taken to the station by the police. The group immediately begin to think that everything about Tyler is about to come out. Deputy Standall (Mark Pellegrino), also the father of Alex Standall, reveals that Bryce has been missing since the night of the Homecoming game.

Clay begins to freak out after coming back from the station. Most people appear unconcerned, after all, he's not the popular person in the school anymore. Some even say that he's holed himself up somewhere in Vegas. Nora, however, believes that someone knows where he is. She's aware of the monstrous things he's done but she's still her son and she'd like to know he's safe. Clay does have something to worry about. He has sent Bryce a text message, threatening to kill him.

Clay isn't the only person who recently contacted Bryce. Bryce left Tyler a voicemail, telling him that 'those things are taken care of'. Zach also tries to leave a message for Bryce in secret. Monty is taken down to the station and questioned.

It's shown that Justin Foley is now living with the Jensen family. He's waiting for the official adoption process into the family to be completed. Him and Clay have a close brotherly friendship now and they share an extension house on the side of the main family home.

In voice over, Ani reveals that her life changed forever the day she met Bryce Walker.
