"Maybe there aren't any good kids."

Alex and Monty get into a fight after Monty very nearly hits Alex with his car. Alex is beaten up pretty badly but when his dad finds out, he praises him for standing up for himself. The student honor board take an emergency meeting and decide to suspend Monty and don't punish Alex.

It's Valentine's Day and Liberty High celebrate with a dollar valentine survey. Students fill out a questionnaire describing their ideal partner and are then matched up on dates. Hannah basically describes Clay but because Jeff intervened with Clay's answers by making him sound more 'dateable', Hannah isn't matched with him.

In the present, Clay is helping Sheri with homework and study papers. After a heart to heart, they make out on Clay's bed but he stops, knowing he's thinking of Hannah and not Sheri. Clay apologises but Sheri reveals she's scared of Clay listening to her tape and thinking she's a terrible person. He tells her he hasn't listened yet and didn't even know she was on the tapes. This leads him to think that Sheri was manipulating him into liking her so he didn't think badly of her when he got to her tape. He tells her to leave.

Flashback. The Valentine's survey results have put Bryce at the top of Hannah's list. Hannah is at the top of Marcus' list. Marcus calls Hannah to ask her on a date, to which she reluctantly accepts. After waiting an hour for him to show, Marcus finally arrives with an entourage of friends. The logic behind his lateness is essentially that if she waits, she's down to fuck. With that in mind, Marcus gropes Hannah. She angrily throws him off, embarrassing him in front of the restaurant and his friends. He responds by telling her he thought she was easy. Hannah is stunned and sickened, sitting there and wonders whether this was her fault.

Present day. Justin's mother has broken up with her boyfriend and is going through another drug binge. Jessica arrives at the house to find Justin as he's not been in school and she's not seen him. When she propositions him, he turns her down and pushes her away. His force is quite aggressive, upsetting her enough to leave. She steals a bottle of vodka on her way out.

Hannah's parents are still struggling to cope with the fact they didn't realise what their daughter was going through before her death. After going through her belongings in her room, they only manage to come up with circumstantial evidence to link her death to the school. Olivia Baker can't understand how neither of them could see Hannah's pain. They come to the conclusion that they both may have spent too much focus on the pharmacy. Meanwhile, Clay's mother is experiencing similar issues. Clay isn't opening up to her at all and she's unsure as to how to help him.

Flashback. Hannah is still sitting alone in the diner, shell-shocked at what happened. Zach has come back; this time, he's alone. Hannah lets him sit with her.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Frame-Up: Marcus plants weed on Clay to try and undermine him. The school do bag searches in the classes. When they come into Clay's class, he doesn't make any move to hide anything as he doesn't know it's been planted. Skye asks him why he didn't hide it beforehand.
  • Kangaroo Court: The Liberty High Student Council runs like one during their hearing for Monty and Alex after their fight.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Marcus planting weed on Clay actually led Clay to finishing the tapes, getting a recorded confession from Bryce and Jessica passing the tapes onto Mr. Porter. As a teacher, Mr. Porter legally is obliged to pass them onto the police, therefore incriminating all the people who Hannah felt had done her wrong.
  • The Reveal: Marcus is the subject of the tape as he had tricked Hannah into going on a date to see if the slut rumours were true, humiliating her even further.
