Duffman is put out of commission thanks to hip surgery and Homer becomes the new face of Duff Beer, which for someone like him, would be a dream come true... except Homer has to go stop drinking Duff (again) in order to secure the job.

Tropes:

  • Comically Missing the Point: Homer gets into a race car to escape an angry mob and drives through the race track, which causes him to return to the starting point. When he eventually realizes his escape attempts fail because of his route, he thinks he can escape by driving in reverse.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • When Marge shows concern about Bart and Lisa playing with t-shirt bazookas, Homer says he never heard about anyone dying from those. One of the kids then shoots a portrait of Ned's deceased first wife Maude.
    • When sworn as Duffman, Homer promises not to have lands, ladies or offspring in-character. In "Old Yeller Belly", Duffman wonders what would happen to his lady, offspring and lands after he's replaced by Santa's Little Helper, said things being actually just for a Super Bowl ad.
  • Disqualification-Induced Victory: Homer becomes runner-up for the Duffman job but the winner is disqualified for having a tattoo featuring another beer brand, making Homer the new winner.
  • Eye Scream: After being declared the new Duffman due to the winner being disqualified, Homer's eye gets struck by the lone confetto that drops. This results in some bleeding.
  • Hesitation Equals Dishonesty: Homer hesitates when asked if he'd show up drunk for work at the nuclear power plant.
  • Improbable Aiming Skills: When Homer is observing Springfield from a blimp, he spots Moe, who retaliates by shooting Homer's telescope.
  • Jerkass: The bicycle riders who throw Moleman into a dumpster because he was not riding a bike.
  • Just Train Wrong: The train that hits the bicycle jerks has an automobile horn instead of an actual locomotive horn.
  • Klingon Promotion: Duff makes an ad where Homer becomes the new Duffman by covering the previous one with molten gold.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: The bicycle jerks are too busy celebrating their getting rid of Moleman to notice the train about to hit them.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Sober Homer's reaction once he sees what the beer he promotes does to people who drink it.
  • Perfectly Cromulent Word: There's no confetti left for Homer's coronation as the new Duffman. Howard K. Duff obliges him "one confettus." The real singular form of confetti is "confetto".
  • Sanity Slippage: Seeing her father get chased by an angry mob one time too many has made Lisa seek help from her personal counselor, who happily tells her to her face she has all the coping skills needed to endure his mistakes. Marge suddenly asks why Lisa is talking to thin air.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The European DJ who becomes one of the judges at the talent show is a parody of Daft Punk.
    • The 1950s-era Duff ad is a parody of a commercial for Hamms Beer made during that period.
    • H.K. Duff says his grandfather plagiarized a fascist icon for Duffman because he couldn't use Woody Woodpecker.
    • The commercial that marks Homer's debut as Duffman is a parody of Game of Thrones, complete with a throne made of bottles instead of swords.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: After he becomes Duffman, Homer finds he is not allowed to drink. He might be a spokesman for a beer company, but it's still a job and doing any job requires you to be sober.
  • Take That!: To alcohol-free beer. Everyone who was tricked into drinking it instead of a regular Duff is furious upon being told that.
  • Tempting Fate: When Homer has to drink again to appease an angry crowd, Marge says she'll be proud no matter what. Homer ends up trying to drink from a man dressed like a bottle.
  • Undesirable Prize: The Duffman position becomes this for Homer when he learns he must stay sober.
  • Women Are Wiser: Barry Duffman and two of his former Duffman girls took jobs at a coffee shop. They outrank him because, as Barry himself admits, they learned the new job better than he did.
  • Your Mind Makes It Real: The beer-detection chip works even when Homer just licks beer foam from Marge's face. He's eventually told the chip wasn't real.
