Recap / The Office USS 8 E 13 Jury Duty

Go To

After Jim fakes having jury duty to spend time with Pam and their newborn child, Dwight suspects something is awry and tries to trip Jim up with an investigation. Meanwhile, Angela gives birth to her son, whom Dwight believes is his.

Tropes:

  • Blatant Lies: Angela supposedly has just given birth to Phillip that day, but when the rest of the office comes to see the baby they are shocked to see a baby clearly past a month old in her arms. Oscar tells her how obvious it is the baby is not premature, forcing her to finally come clean that he was actually conceived before their wedding.
  • The Bus Came Back: Pam returns for the first time since taking her extended maternity leave after "Gettysburg".
  • "Fawlty Towers" Plot: Andy tries to help Jim keep his story straight by revealing that he actually drove Jim to the courthouse every morning, but Jim decides to just come clean after realizing that this only makes him look more suspicious.
  • Hypocrite: After giving Pam a lot of crap for having a baby out of wedlock, Angela reluctantly reveals that Phillip was conceived a month before hers and Robert's wedding (and was possibly even conceived with Dwight instead of her husband).
  • Spotting the Thread: Dwight realizes that Jim is lying about jury duty when Toby mentions Ernesto's food truck that caters for the jurors and Jim mistakenly refers to it as a restaurant. He later pegs Jim for more details about the hit-and-run case he was supposedly sitting on and asks a question about the perp's bicycle... only to then reveal Jim never mentioned anything about him riding a bicycle.
  • Wham Shot: When the office workers finally get to see Angela's baby, and it looks extremely matured for a baby supposedly just-born.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: The office's reaction when they find out that Jim lied about being on jury duty.
    • Ends up subverted when he and Pam bring the kids to the office and they see the chaos the Halperts were dealing with between a constantly crying newborn and a cranky toddler, leading the staff to send Jim home with their blessing. Darryl even says that he remembers what it was like when his daughter was that age and knows that Jim isn't on a vacation during all of this.
