Recap / The Office USS 7 E 23 The Inner Circle

Go To

Now that Michael is gone, Deangelo's true style of management shows as he is picking favorites among the staff.

Episode Tropes:

  • Disproportionate Retribution: Deangelo kicks Jim out of the "inner circle" in a extremely dickish way, by texting all the other members but Jim, then when Jim goes into the office anyway, Deangelo just stares at him until he goes away. All this because Jim told him that Angela thought Deangelo was sexist.
  • The Dog Bites Back: Deangelo thinks Ryan is Kelly's supervisor, so Ryan, trying to look like he's actually doing crap, starts bossing Kelly around whenever Deangelo is in their vicinity. After a certain point, Kelly understandably has enough and lashes out at Ryan in front of Deangelo... on which Deangelo declares Kelly hysterical and decides Ryan should be her supervisor for real. Fortunately for her, Deangelo's fate at the end of the episode undoes Ryan's undeserved impromptu promotion.
  • Dropped a Bridge on Him: Deangelo is taken out of commission after suffering a head injury from the basketball game leaves him comatose. Later episodes confirm that he was rendered braindead.
  • Evolving Credits: The intro has been edited to remove shots of now-former star Steve Carell as Michael. The final shot is of Deangelo adjusting a southwestern figurine.
  • Rage Breaking Point: Throughout the episode, Deangelo has tried to get Dwight to like him, though Dwight is indifferent to him at best. Near the end however, Dwight finally starts listening after a fed up Deangelo threatens to fire him.
  • Rapid-Fire "Yes!": Deangelo yells this to Dwight.
  • Reflexive Response: Angela can be heard muttering “Michael” when the head-injured Deangelo appears at the office.
  • Straw Misogynist: Deangelo's true style of management as he picks favorites among the staff (mostly the males), and ignoring the women in the office. Not helping his case is that he hired a Brainless Beauty as his personal assistant, instead of other more qualified people. And considering his lack of business expertise and the fact that her name is Jordan, which is also a man's name, he may not have even known her gender when he hired her.
  • Wham Episode: Deangelo suffers a massive head injury from a basketball stunt, leaving Dunder-Mifflin without a regional manager.
