Recap / The Odd Couple 1970 S 1 E 5 The Breakup

Go To

When a hungover Oscar gets into a fight with his roommate, he throws Felix out onto the streets. While Felix's fussiness keeps annoying every one of his hosts, Oscar's life slowly goes downhill as his messiness and irresponsibility lead to worse and worse consequences.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Adopted to the House: After Oscar throws him out, Felix stays with a number of their friends.
    • First he goes to Murray and Mimi's apartment. Unfortunately, Felix's insensitivity and compulsive cleanliness get on their nerves and they tell him Mimi's mother is visiting and needs the extra room.
    • Then he goes to Vinnie's, only to start an argument about cleaning products that gets him evicted in hours.
    • Finally, the Pigeon Sisters invite him over. They ultimately realize they may have bitten off too much when Felix begins talking about the shower schedule.
  • Agony of the Feet: Oscar's broken-down ironing board collapses on his foot, causing him to limp. The next time, it collapses on his knee, causing him even greater agony.
  • Bait-and-Switch Sentiment: When Oscar takes him back and he steps into the kitchen, Felix suppresses a sob. Oscar thinks it's his sentimental nature. Felix is actually upset about the extreme messiness of the kitchen.
  • Book Ends: The story begins and ends with Felix giving the hungover Oscar a pick-me-up drink.
  • Discreet Drink Disposal: At the end, Felix gives Oscar a pick-me-up, which he finds too disgusting to drink. Trying to be considerate, he waits for Felix to leave and takes it to the bathroom...where Felix is waiting.
  • Forced from Their Home: Oscar throws Felix out at the beginning of the episode.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Felix keeps causing trouble for his hosts, but he never means any harm. Even after pushing him out, Mimi feels sorry for him and seems to view him as a nice guy.
  • Reckless Gun Usage: Murray's gun (which he was cleaning in preparation for an inspection) turns out to be loaded. Felix considers this carelessness scandalous, but says he'll let it slide this once.
  • Sexiled: One of the things involved in the opening fight is that Felix kept Oscar out till early morning because he had a date in the apartment. (If the doormat is turned over, that means the apartment is taken and the other has to fend for himself.) Felix protests that the arrangement was Oscar's idea.
  • Supreme Chef: According to Gwendolyn, Cecily is a wonderful cook. Her past husband, Sidney, started out rail-thin but gained a large amount of weight after their marriage.
