Recap / The Odd Couple 1970 S 1 E 19 Youve Come A Long Way Baby

Go To

Oscar is keyed up anticipating a sportswriters' dinner and the skit he and Felix plan to do, only for his roommate to bring home a baby left at his photography studio. Over Oscar's protests, Felix insists on keeping the baby until his mother comes for him, even as the dinner draws closer and closer.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Bait-and-Switch Comment: After Oscar has raised the possibility of reporting the baby to the police, Murray arrives, looking very serious and saying he's not here on a social visit. It turns out he left his gun in the apartment during the last poker game. Felix finds the bait-and-switch very funny.
  • Cloud Cuckoolander: Phillip, one of the children in the building, fancies himself a spy/detective, claiming he's been to detective school and solved a case. He also claims his parents can't cope with current events. One might see this as just imagination, but he seems to take it dead seriously. Oscar quickly becomes tired of his rambling.
  • Not What It Looks Like: While arguing that they should let the police take the baby, Oscar points out that someone could misunderstand Felix taking the baby home as him kidnapping the kid.
  • Pop-Culture Pun Episode Title: The title refers to an ad for Virginia Slims cigarettes.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Phillip, who thinks he's a spy, calls his Chihuahua "007."
    • The skit Oscar and Felix plan to do is Abbott and Costello's "Who's on First?"
  • Water Guns and Balloons: Murray arrives to retrieve his gun. While there, he tells Felix that he realized he left it just before morning inspection and had to buy a water gun to stand in for it. On the way out of the shop, he managed to make an arrest...with the unloaded water gun.
