Recap / The Nostalgia Critic S 8 E 7

Go To

Release: March 31, 2015

Focus: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014)

Tagline: The Nerd and Critic take on the Michael Bay mess-terpeice.

  • Actually Pretty Funny: One scene both Critic and Nerd could agree on that was fun is the elevator ride as the Turtles have a bit of an impromptu jam session.
  • Amusing Injuries: April (played by Tamara) suffers these throughout the episode, usually via explosions (although toward the end she's buried by falling debris and in the intro she crashes a car).
  • Call-Back:
  • Catchphrase: Joked about in the intro, wherein Critic actually shouts "Catchphrase!" at one point. Also, April has "What a story/scoop!" and Santa Christ has "The Christ has spoken!"
  • Crossover: With The Angry Video Game Nerd, marking his first appearance in years, as well as his very first in a canonical Nostalgia Critic episode.
  • Deadline News: A running gag with April, who keeps getting distracted by potential stories, usually leading to her getting blown up.
  • Distressed Damsel: April, of course.
  • Enemy Mine: As much as they disagree with many things, both the Critic and the Nerd agree on one thing — they love TMNT, which brings them to this review.
  • Gag Sub: During one of the times the Shredder speaks Gratuitous Japanese, the added on subtitles point out his lips aren't moving.
  • Lampshade Hanging: Throughout the review, Critic and Nerd take jabs at all the other terrible adaptations that TMNT have had over years. They come to the conclusion that TMNT has always been Merchandise-Driven and this film isn't even technically the worst film in the franchise.
  • The Mentor: Santa Christ filling the role of Splinter.
  • Merchandise-Driven: The guys learn the hard way that the Heart of the Turtles is just to sell more merchandise.
  • Running Gag: April getting injured, usually by explosions.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: When the Critic and the Nerd were swimming in the infamous Dam...
Critic: (upon seeing the seaweed hallway) Oh, HELL NO!
    Nerd: FUCK THAT NOISE!
  • Special Edition Title: The opening theme is a recreation of that of the 1987 cartoon, with both the Critic and the Nerd dubbed the "Thirty Something Nerdy Critics".
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: The guys say this is what happened with April getting fired from her reporter job by not having evidence about the Turtles or the Foot Clan.
  • Talking Is a Free Action: Lampshaded when the Critic and the Nerd notice that Raphael's speech to the other turtles towards the end seems implausible considering how they're supposed to be falling in slow motion. They wonder if Raphael was just talking really fast during that scene, and they show the same clip with Raphael's voice sped up.
