Film: Mary Poppins Returns

Tropes:

  • Badass Fingersnap: Emily Blunt's Mary Poppins is able to disintegrate anyone she wants into dust with a snap of her fingers.
Mary Poppins 2.0: Well, now, in Disney, when you snap your fingers, something very different happens.
  • Big "NO!": The Critic lets one loose when Mary Poppins 2.0 kills the original Mary Poppins.
  • Brick Joke: When the Critic realizes the youngest brother is named Georgie, he immediately replaces Mary Poppins floating with the kite with Pennywise floating with his balloons and shouting, "HIYA, GEORGIE!!!" The exact same imagery is later inserted into the "Nowhere to Go But Up" segment.
  • Flat Character: The Critic's opinion on Michael's kids, declaring them as Boy #1 (John), Boy #2 (Georgie), and Girl (Annabel). That said, he does refer to Georgie by name solely for the It references.
  • I Am the Noun: Mary Poppins 2.0 after killing the original:
Mary Poppins 2.0: "She needs an update, and I am that update.
  • Reduced to Dust: Emily Blunt's Mary Poppins disintegrates Julie Andrews's Mary Poppins and the classic animated Disney films into dust.
  • Shout-Out:
    • When the Critic realizes the youngest brother is named Georgie, he can't resist making It references.
    • Lin-Manuel Miranda's rapping segment during "A Cover is Not The Book" is dubbed over with "A-Hamilton, a-Hamilton, a-Hamilton, a-Hamilton!"
    • Several to Avengers: Endgame, from a "That is Britain's ass" quip to the climax being a homage to the portals scene.
  • Take That!: When describing his thoughts on the film having an outright villain, the Critic sarcastically declares that since The Lorax was a hit, they had to add a villain to a film that doesn't need a villain.
  • Villain of the Week: Emily Blunt's Mary Poppins is the main antagonist of the review, killing Julie Andrews's Mary Poppins and the classic animated Disney films Thanos-style and forcing the Critic to shower her film with praise.
