Recap / The New Scooby Doo Movies S 1 E 10 The Ghost Of Bigfoot

Go To

En route to Mackinac Lodge for a ski trip, the Scooby gang happen across comedy duo Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, who are traveling to the same place in hopes of getting work. Both groups receive more than they bargained for when the lodge turns out to have one unwelcome guest: the ghost of Bigfoot.

This episode includes the following tropes:

  • Aside Glance: Ollie looks sideways into the camera several times in response to his friend's kookiness. Given that it was a staple in their own skits, the episode couldn't very well have omitted it.
  • Call a Pegasus a "Hippogriff": The innkeeper calls the spook of the week the ghost of Bigfoot. However, he then describes it as coming into existence when a meanspirited mountain man nicknamed Bigfoot froze to death, rather than having anything to do with the cryptid.
  • Christmas Creep: When Daphne comments that she loves the winter season, Scooby agrees and begins singing "Jingle Bells". Shaggy cuts him off, saying that Christmas doesn't come for a while yet.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: After spending most of the episode chasing and being chased by Bigfoot, Stan and Ollie finally earn a steady job as bellhops, with which they seem very pleased.
  • Euphemism Buster: The gang pick up the hitchhiking Laurel and Hardy after finding out they're heading the same place. Ollie tells them that their trip to the hotel is strictly business and that they hope to procure employment as baggage expediters. Stan promptly clarifies that they're looking for work as bellhops.
  • Fright Beside Them: Ollie begins reassuring Stan, who's in the next bed, that he and the other guys can take care of Bigfoot if he shows up. Unbeknownst to Ollie, Stan left for the bathroom a few minutes into the speech, and Bigfoot sat down in his bed. When Ollie sits up and turns toward the bed, he sees who he's really been talking to and runs across the hall to fetch Fred, Shaggy, and Scooby.
  • Hospitality for Heroes: At the end of the episode, thanks to the gang solving the mystery, the lodge is back in business with customers coming in from everywhere. Fortunately, thanks to Scooby being the one to capture Bigfoot, the innkeeper says the gang is welcome without needing a reservation.
  • Human Snowball: Scooby accidentally trips into Ollie, sending him and Stan on a sled trip down the ski slopes. By the end, Ollie is almost covered in a snowball, causing Shaggy and Scooby to mistake him for Bigfoot.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • Stan panics on seeing Bigfoot throw a snowball at them and he and Ollie crash the car fighting over the wheel. Naturally, the standard "another nice mess"/"it wasn't my fault" exchange follows.
    • As in their own films, Ollie looks sideways into the camera when Stan does something especially odd.
  • Pet the Dog: Despite bossing Stan around as usual, Ollie gets several friendly moments with him.
    • When Stan complains that he can't sleep, Ollie pulls out a book of fairy tales and reads him "Goldilocks and the Three Bears" rather than simply telling him to keep quiet so he can sleep.
    • Despite his harsh refusal for the two to leave after Bigfoot shows up, Ollie tells Stan that he'll protect him and spends several minutes reassuring him how numbers will keep them safe.
    • After making a treacherous crossing over a lake by hopping from ice block to ice block, Ollie calls back to Stan that it's all right, pointing out that he managed to get to the other side.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Laurel wants to quit after Velma and Daphne see "the ghost of Bigfoot", but Hardy puts his foot down.
  • Security Cling: After successfully tracking down Bigfoot, Scooby jumps into Shaggy's arms. Then the monster runs into Laurel and Hardy's room. A few moments later, Stan races out and jumps into Ollie's arms.
  • Tempting Fate: Two separate Bigfoot sightings begin with one person reassuring their roommate that things will be all right (Velma and Daphne in one case and Ollie and Stan in another).
  • Undercover Cop Reveal: The skiing instructor, Hans Edelweiss, reveals himself as an undercover cop when he arrests Bigfoot after the spook ends up flat on his back during a chase with the gang.
  • Wasn't That Fun?: After they accidentally take a wild sled ride down the ski slopes (during which they switch places with each other and even Shaggy and Scooby due to the bumpy terrain), Stan thanks Ollie and asks if they can do it again. Ollie is understandably baffled.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: The hotel clerk mentions that some hotel guests had disappeared prior to the episode's start, but the episode never reveals whether they were involved in the Bigfoot scheme, were kidnapped, or simply ran away without informing the owner.
