Recap / The Muppet Show S 4 E 18

Go To

Christopher Reeve guest stars, much to the excitement of Miss Piggy.

Songs and Sketches:

  • "Disco Frog", sung by Kermit and other frogs.
  • Hamlet's Soliloquy: Christopher Reeve attempts the speech, but when he flubs, he, Fozzie, Link Hogthrob, and Yorick instead sing "Brush Up Your Shakespeare".
  • Muppet Newsflash: An attack sheep is on the loose.
  • Veterinarian's Hospital: This time, it's "Dr. Reeve" giving Rowlf a taste of his own medicine.
  • UK Spot: "Sam's Song", sung by Floyd and Janice.
  • "The Toreador Song", played by Fozzie and a matador.
  • Muppet Labs: An electrically-heated milking machine.
  • "East of the Sun (West of the Moon)", performed by Christopher and Miss Piggy.

This episode has examples of:

  • Actor Allusion: The episode is rife with jokes about Reeve's role as Superman, such as being able to change in a phone booth, having super strength, and leaving "faster than a speeding bullet".
  • Actually Quite Catchy: Floyd and Janice mock Sam the Eagle's up-tightness by singing the Bing Crosby hit "Sam's Song". Beauregard joins them on harmonica, Nigel whistles, and a rat dances along. Sam attempts to ignore them while writing a letter to stop all the weirdness on the show, but after they're gone, he actually hums the melody as he writes.
Kermit: [entering] Hey, Sam, that's a nice song. What is that?
Sam: Oh, I don't know. Something called "Fred's Song".
    Kermit: Hmm. That's very pretty.
    Sam: No, it's not.
  • Ambiguously Gay: After Beaker gets an unexpected perm from the milking machine, Bunsen tells him how attractive he looks and cuddles up to him. Even before this moment, he calls him the Affectionate Nickname "Beakie-poo".
  • Attractive Bent-Gender: In the Muppet Labs sketch, the latest experiment-gone-wrong gives Beaker long, curly hair — and Bunsen suddenly finds him "hauntingly attractive". Downplayed, since Beaker's hair seems to be the only thing that changes.
  • Call-Back: Miss Piggy originally plans to sing "Never Before" from The Muppet Movie, reminding Kermit of how they performed it together, until she learns who this week's guest is and ditches Kermit.
  • Distracted by the Sexy: At one point when Piggy is trying to talk to Christopher, she loses her train of thought when she sees the skin-tight shirt that he's wearing showing off his muscles.
Miss Piggy: How did you get a job as Superman? Did someone see you lifting weights or... WHAA-HAHA!!!
  • Does Not Know His Own Strength: Christopher explains to Piggy that he's not as strong as Superman, but he keeps breaking everything he touches.
  • Eating the Eye Candy: Miss Piggy spends the episode shamelessly lusting over Christopher "Perfect Body" Reeve.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Once again, like in the Peter Ustinov episode, Kermit gets jealous as Piggy focuses her attention on Christopher Reeve.
  • Killer Rabbit: The Newsman reports on an escaped sheep bred to attack wolves — as the sheep in question is sneaking up behind him. The Newsman reports that the sheep only attacks at the sound of a bell. And then the phone rings...
  • No-Sell: When Christopher makes a crack about Piggy's weight, she hits him with one of her trademark karate chops. The rebound leaves her shaking, while Christopher remains unharmed.
Kermit: He really is the man of steel!
  • Once an Episode: Since Dr. Bob is indisposed (and playing the patient), Reeve fills in for him, doing all the things Rowlf usually does in Vet's Hospital sketches, mimicking Rowlf's style of laughing and looking around in confusion when the narrator starts speaking.
  • Phone Booth Changing Room: As one of the many references to Reeve's role as Superman, he changes costumes twice throughout the episode (first into his costume for the Hamlet sketch, then into a tuxedo to provide piano accompaniment for Miss Piggy) by getting into a phone booth that has been placed backstage, ducking down off screen, and then reemerging wearing the costume.
  • Skewed Priorities: Bunsen's only concern about Beaker getting stuck in the milking machine is that dandruff will get in the milk.
  • Stalker Shrine: Miss Piggy decorates her room with a lot of Superman posters.
  • A Taste of Their Own Medicine: In the Veterinarian's Hospital sketch, it's Doctor Bob's turn to be the patient. Lampshaded by Janice and Piggy.
Dr. Bob: But my medicine tastes bad!
Janice: Well, bad taste never bothered you before.
  • You Never Did That for Me: Kermit does this twice.
    • When Miss Piggy calls Christopher Reeve a "perfect body", a jealous Kermit grumbles, "She never called me perfect body."
    • He later makes the same comment when Miss Piggy calls Reeve a "handsome brute", apparently forgetting that she did call Kermit that in the Pig Calypso number in the Bob Hope episode.

Waldorf: Well, this has been an evening to remember!
Statler: Why?
Waldorf: I forgot.
