Recap / The Mask S 1 E 6 Shadow Of A Skillit

Go To

A youth-stealing demon named Skillit invades Edge City to steal the shadows of Charlie, Peggy, and Milo (which age them considerably), and only the Mask can stop him.

Tropes:

  • Anything but That!: Skillit has this reaction at the end after he's been Brought Down to Normal and the Mask tells him he now has to go to school.
  • Balloon Belly: The Mask gets his shirt belt tugged by Milo who wants him to feed him so he does by giving Milo all of the dog food which causes Milo to end up with a big belly and Stanley to get very annoyed with The Mask for doing that along with not getting everyone's shadows back while only getting theirs back.
Mask: Shadow's coming home to daddy! As my threads are glaringly not snazzy without it. (He rushes off in superhuman speed but then sees his suspenders tugged by Milo which causes him to go back to the apartment) Hey what do you know? (He crashes into a wall with him sticking his tongue out while Milo pushes his bowl forward) But first... (pulls out a large box of dog food, much to Milo's delight) Eat up, Johnny.
Stanley: I mean you get all the way to Mr. Shadow Snatcher and forget to bring everyone else's shadows back? (He then sees Milo being full to the brim) And you overfed Milo!
  • Batman Gambit: The Mask tricks Skillit by pretending to take his offer to go to the shadowland but takes him back to Edge City and takes out all the remaining shadows that still remain in his bag.
Skillit: No! No fair, no fair, you cheated!
Mask: Well, if that isn't the pot calling the skillet black? (rips Skillit's shadow away from him, wringing it like a wet towel as a few more shadows fly out) What about this, huh? And what about that, HUH?! (smugly) That's it. Deal's off, Skillit! You cheated. (mocking) And I knew you would~! Nyah-ha!
  • Berserk Button: While he had already crossed a line by stealing the shadows (and the youth) of numerous innocent citizens of Edge City, including Charlie and Peggy, Skillit pretty much sledgehammered the Mask's button by stealing Milo's too.
Mask: There are certain things in this world which are taboo, forbidden, verboten. AND MESSING WITH INNOCENT DOGS AND BABY SEALS IS TOP OF THE LIST!
  • Beethoven Was an Alien Spy: Skillit tells The Mask about the previous wearers who wore the mask who turns out to be the worst kind of people on the planet and says that Abraham Lincoln wore the mask as well.
  • Brought Down to Normal: This happens to Skillit when his shadow flees back to the Shadowland without him, leaving him behind in the human realm.
Skillit: You don't understand! My powers are rooted in my shadow! Without my shadow, I’m just n-n-NORMAL! And like any normal person, I’ll grow old!
  • Heroic Host: It turns out that Stanley is this for the mask as the previous wearers who wore it are the worst kind of people and also the reason why his alter ego The Mask is harmless and good hearted despite being chaotic, having morals, and has genuine care, kindness, love and compassion for people, and his friends despite being annoyed by some people there at times.
  • Darker and Edgier: While the previous episode was very dark this one shows people actually growing old and dying as well with Skillit being a very dark villain with him telling his shadow that if The Mask refuses to join him the implication will be that they kill him which makes this one of the darkest episodes of the series.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: Skillit does not genuinely understand why The Mask doesn't like hurting people or killing them and the fact that he would choose a short existence instead of living on forever like him in the shadowland.
  • Everyone Has Standards: The Mask meets Skillit who has a history of meeting the other mask wearers, and over time the Mask is disturbed by him when he finds out that Skillit’s idea of fun involves hurting people. And though he may seem to have taken Skillit’s offer to go with him to the Shadowland, it only turns out to be a trick as the Mask cares about Stanley and loves him as well so even when he seemed tempted by the offer to go with Skillit since he can be around forever he decides to only pretend to take it instead knowing that will erase Stanley forever.
Mask: What kind of sicko do you think I am?
  • Friend to All Children: The Mask as always cares about children so when he sees that shadow he has been fighting is actually the little girl's shadow, he feels embarrassed and ashamed for not checking first so he decide to give the little girl some dollars to make up for it.
  • I Choose to Stay: The Mask though offered to go to the shadowland so that he can be around forever and no longer having to take his face off decided to stay because that Skillit still has other shadows but the other reason is that he cares about the people in Edge City, his friends and his unmasked self Stanley who he loves very much like a little brother so even though there's a chance that Stanley will die along with everyone else he decide to do it because living without the people he has will be a empty existence and a lonely life as well so he chooses a happy but short life over a long empty one.
  • Immortal Immaturity:
    • Skillit despite being 4,000 years old acts like a selfish little brat and thinks that The Mask is like him because he met the previous wearers but however The Mask is not like them and after he defeats Skillit, he throws a tantrum because he lost all his shadows.
    • The Mask discovers that he is immortal from Skillit and The Mask does behave and act like a little kid but he does genuinely care about the people who live in Edge City and his friends, even when being given the offer to exist forever and don’t have to be around with people who will die eventually, he decides to stay with those he cares about rather than be with someone who clearly does not care about anyone who is not immortal like them.
  • The Jekyll Is a Jerk: Skillit enforces this as he hates Nice Guys who own the Mask and goes out of his way to kill them, preferring them bad.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: The Mask after meeting with Skillit and seeing how powerful and dangerous he is decides to pretend as a cartoonish more than usual, idiotic and uncaring man which even Stanley calls him out on only getting their shadow back but The Mask knows he has to trick Skillit into coming to him so that he can get everyone’s shadows back from him which works as he manages to get everyone’s shadows back to them in the end.
  • Rapid Aging: After their shadows have been taken people started to age very fast because of the fact they need their shadows to keep them alive which The Mask has to make sure to get them back so that they don’t end up dying.
  • Nice Guy: It turns out that Stanley being this is the reason why The Mask is also this because if the wearer is a good-hearted man then the masked alter-ego will be the same as well which is why The Mask refuses to go help Skillit hurt innocent people though he knows that he can't let him take everyone's shadows so that's why he pretends to be a idiot so that he can get them back.
Skillit: Hey, look, I gotta get back into Shadowland before the evening's up. So come on, time's a wastin'. This city festers with wholesome good people. Let's go slaughter a bunch of innocents. It'll be just like old times. What do you say huh?
Mask: (He is disturbed and seeing just how dangerous he is so he decide to play it smart) I say i don't wanna hang around no creepy face, floatin' in midair, shadow snatching kid. Now that i got my shadow back. I'm going to the Coco Bongo and they got a rule. You gotta be this tall to ride shrimpy.
  • Who Wants to Live Forever?: The reason why The Mask decide to choose a happy life even if it's a short one in Edge City because though he can live on forever in the shadowland, he chooses to have a life with friends because living forever can become a lonely existence.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Skillit was already mad enough that the Mask tricked him into returning all the shadows, but once he realizes that his time to return to the Shadowland is quickly running out, he loses it. It gets worse when only his shadow makes it through the portal without him, leaving him trapped in the mortal realm and stripped of his powers and immortality.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: The Mask as usual changes into a wrestler with long hair when he saw a shadow which he thought was the one who stole people's shadows only to find it's the shadow of a girl instead due to his embarrassment, a tourist with a black shirt when he reunites with his shadow while pretending to be more cartoonish than usual, a little boy with a blue shirt, a samurai, a boxing referee, another wrestler but one which is masked and after defeating Skillit turns into a Irish policeman with a brown shirt.
