Season 2, Episode 2

Hotel Spa Potions

Quentin, Alice, Margo, and Penny return to Brakebills to find battle magic powerful enough to kill the Beast. While they search for that, Eliot deals with being High King of Fillory, and Julia struggles to bait a trap for Reynard.

Tropes That Appear In This Episode:

  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: All of Quentin and Alice's unused anagrams, including "Eliot Pass Photon" and "Olin Poops Thetas".
  • Gender Flip: Bigby was make in the books.
  • Hour of Power: Alice's god-power is starting to wear off, sharply limiting their time frame to battle the Beast.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Julia ignores Quentin's warning about getting away from the Beast, but when he points out that the Beast is killing magic, she counters that Reynard is killing people.
    • Mind you, the Beast has killed a LOT of people.
  • The Magic Goes Away: With the Beast drinking from the wellspring, the magic of Fillory has sharply decreased. Since everything in Fillory runs on magic, this causes problems. In theory, a Fillory without magic would be no worse than Earth, but no one has any idea how to survive without magic. Eliot discovers that Fillorian farmers don't even know what fertilizer is, and he has to delve into his repressed childhood memories to teach them how to grow crops without magic.
  • Named by the Adaptation: Bigby is given the first name "Neeny" here when his first name wasn't mentioned in the books.
  • Power Tattoo: Margo, Quentin, Alice and Penny all get tattoos courtesy of Dean Fogg, who then seals a cacodemon inside each of them with a magical command to set them loose if needed in a fight.
  • Shirtless Scene: Penny has to spend twelve hours with his hands tied behind his back. He talks Sunderland into massaging his shoulders, which means he also spends those twelve hours shirtless.
  • Significant Anagram: Quentin and Alice run through about 300 different anagrams for the title of Bigby's battle magic book. In the end, Quentin tosses off "Hotel Spa Potions" as a joke, and Professor Sunderland comments that there's actually a book by that name in the library.
  • Teacher/Student Romance: A failed attempt. Penny comes on to Sunderland. She tells him to come back after he's graduated.
