Recap / The Lion Guard S 2 E 7 Swept Away

Go To

Summary: With Beshte alone in the Outlands, Scar uses the opportunity to attack the Lion Guard’s strongest member.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Armor-Piercing Response:
Janja: Who cares about a hippo?
Scar: (rises out of the volcano, roaring) I CARE!
  • Artistic License – Physics: Fuli somehow manages to keep a massive boulder from crushing Beshte by standing on top of it, even though her weight (and the fact that the ledge said boulder is on is crumbling) should cause the rock to plunge anyway.
  • Big Guy Fatality Syndrome: Scar invokes this, plotting to kill the strongest member of the Guard to severely weaken the heroes.
  • Call-Back: Kion uses the Roar on a cloud to make it rain, just as Zira taught him in "Lions of the Outlands."
  • Death from Above: The hyenas push rocks down on Behste after cornering him in a dead end.
  • Depending on the Writer: Beshte has been portrayed as being out in the sun all day without an issue in all other episodes, but now, all of a sudden, if he spends too much time in the sun, he could burn to death.
  • Detectives Follow Footprints: The Guard eventually tracks Beshte via his footprints.
  • Embarrassingly Painful Sunburn: Beshte, after being out in the sun too long. Truth in Television, as hippos do burn and quickly dehydrate without regular access to water, mud or shade, which can cause them to die.
  • Faux Affably Evil: The skinks act like friends to Beshte so they could lure him into a trap.
  • Foregone Conclusion: Given what happens at the end of the series, Beshte cannot be killed and has to survive, because he was present for Kion and Rani's wedding.
  • Mythology Gag: Scar promises the hyenas that if they take out Beshte and weaken the Lion Guard, they'll be free to eat whatever they want in the Pridelands. This is practically the same promise he made to the hyenas in the original film, but replacing Mufasa and Simba with Beshte.
  • Near-Villain Victory: This was the closest Scar has come to nearly winning, with Beshte suffering out in the heat and on the cusp of dying from a heatstroke. If Kion and the Guard hadn't saved him, Scar would've outright won without warning.
  • Oh, Crap!: The hyenas after they fail Scar and when Ushari informs them that they have to see him right now, accompanied by the volcano making a small eruption.
    Janja: [gulps] Oh, boy...
  • The Omniscient: The hyenas forget that as a spirit, Scar can literally see and hear everything that goes on, which means even their failure has not gone unnoticed.
  • Power Incontinence: Kion tries to use his power to make it rain to soften up the dried out riverbed and free the Zebra stuck in it, but he causes a heavier rain than expected and causes a flash flood in the process.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: After failing Scar, the hyenas decide they don't have to report back to Scar right away, at least not empty-handed. Unfortunately for them, Ushari tells them that they have to see him at once, followed by a small eruption from the volcano.
  • Suddenly Shouting:
    • The skink (name is revealed to be Njano in "The Little Guy") that reports back to Ushari yells to get his attention, despite being right behind him.
    • Scar shouts "I CARE!" when informed that Beshte is alone.
  • Surrounded by Idiots: Ushari feels this way about the hyenas. Given their failure later on, it's likely that Scar is starting to share the sentiment again.
  • Tempting Fate: Janja says who cares when Beshte is alone in the Outlands, only for Scar to ROAR out of the volcano and inform Janja he does. Later, when the hyenas fail, Janja is so afraid of reporting it to Scar he suggests they don't have to return soon, only for Ushari to show up and inform them they have to see him right at that moment.
  • There Is No Kill Like Overkill: It is bad enough that hippos will burn out in the sun, but the Hyenas are insistent on killing Beshte when it's only a matter of time until he succumbs to the heat.
