Recap / The Lion Guard S 1 E 16 Too Many Termites

Go To

Summary: The Lion Guard mistakenly chase off aardwolves instead of hyenas and the Pride Lands become overrun with termites.

This episode contains examples of:

  • An Aesop: If you treat someone badly, you should always apologize, even if it's an accident.
  • "Be Quiet!" Nudge: Reirei tends to kick Goigoi hard enough to send him flying away from her every time he speaks out of turn.
  • Crowd Song: "We'll Make You a Meal" turns into this towards the end, with the aardwolves joining in.
  • Dirty Coward: The second Kion kicks in the cave, Reirei immediately tries to talk herself out of trouble.
  • Double Meaning: ‘’We’ll Make You a Meal’’ is practically made of this trope. While it’s clear to the audience Reirei and Goigoi are singing about turning the aardwolves into a meal, but the lyrics also make it sound like they’re planning on making a meal for the aardwolves.
  • Exact Words: Reirei and Goigoi both exploit this trope in order to earn the Aarwolves' trust before trying to eat them.
  • The Ghost: The Hyenas are mentioned numerous times in this episode. Despite not making a physical appearance.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Reirei seems to have this if her children aren't around, as she is significantly more dangerous here.
  • Food as Bribe: The Guard fully convinces the aardwolves to come home to the Pride Lands by promising them termites, which are the reason they need to bring the aardwolves back.
  • Idiot Ball: The aardvarks didn't even bother to check if the creatures they saw were hyenas before telling the Guard. To be fair, they were probably scared they would be attacked by the "hyenas", which doesn't excuse the Guard not checking, and that it was too dark for the aardvarks to get a good look.
  • Idiotic Partner Confession: Goigoi nearly blurts out that he and his mate intend to eat the aardwolves rather than befriend them, which often leads his mate to kick him into submission.
  • Kick Chick: Reirei seems to favor kicks as her preferred method of disciplining her mate every time he angers her, being strong enough to send him flying away from her with a blow from one leg.
  • Mass "Oh, Crap!": The Aardwolves are all visibly terrified when they realize Reirei and Goigoi are planning to eat them.
  • Meaningful Name: Mjomba means "uncle" in Swahili.
  • Mistaken Identity: Aardwolves are on the receiving end of this, mistaken by Kion for their more predatory hyena cousins. Truth in Television, as often the reason mostly harmless animals are killed by people is because they resemble a more dangerous animal, to which they may or may not be related.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: By sending the aarwolves into the outlands using the roar (due to mistaking them for hyenas), Kion manages to get the aardwolves to grow distrustful of the Pridelanders. The aardwolves quickly change there mind once the guard mentions there are lots of termites in the pridelands.
  • Punctuated! For! Emphasis!: Kion, who has had to deal with hyenas every night has lost his patience and says "GET OUT OF THE PRIDE LANDS!" before he uses the Roar on the aardwolves.
  • Running Gag:
    • Goigoi annoying Reirei, usually by nearly ruining her plan of getting the aardwolves to trust the, and then getting kicked into the air as a result.
    • Ogopa and Haya doubting their own opinions.
  • Shrinking Violet: The aardwolves are shy and timid, much like in real life.
  • Termite Trouble: When the Lion Guard chase the aardowlves out of the Pride Lands, the Pride Lands become overpopulated with termites, who destroy the hollow tree the mekendu bats live in and a thick tree bridge.
  • Villain Song: "We'll Make You A Meal" sounds like a friendly song, but it's clear to the audience that the jackals intend to turn the aardwolves into a meal rather than making them one.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Ono is not too fond of being around bats.
