Recap / The Lion Guard S 1 E 14 Never Roar Again

Go To

Summary: While trying to save his mother from a group of hyenas, Kion fears that he has lost control of his Roar and vows to never use it again.note

This episode contains examples of:

  • Adaptational Wimp: Somewhat downplayed, but its surprising that Nala requires her son to save her from a half dozen juvenile male hyenas when she was the first lioness to rip into Scar's army of hyenas in the original film and bust them up en-masse.
  • Bullying a Dragon: Sure, Makku, use Nala as a hostage, then insult Kion about it. It's not like that if Nala happened to escape, or Kion found another way to use the Roar, he wouldn't beat the heck out of you.
    • Berserk Button: Do NOT mess with Kion’s mom right in front of him.
    • The hyenas make the same mistake of ganging up on Nala right in front of Kion, which causes him to use the Roar in anger.
  • Continuity Nod: Bunga refers to himself as "Bunga the Wise" at one point, harking back to an earlier episode of the same name.
  • Dirty Coward: When Nala confronts Janja and his clan, Chungu is all for backing down until Janja reminds him that they outnumber her. Realising this, the hyenas show no qualms about ganging up on her. Likewise, Makuu only makes his move to take over the floodplains the moment he hears Kion has sworn off using the roar.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: As discussed by Mufasa, Scar was once bestowed with the Roar like Kion, but thought of it as another tool for power. But since the Roar was never meant to be used for evil, Scar was stripped of it when he killed his own Lion Guard for not supporting his coup against Mufasa. Due to this, Kion constantly regulates the use of the Roar, fearing he may end up becoming like Scar.
  • Hard Truth Aesop: There are times when anger is necessary if controlled. Don't be afraid to use violence.
  • Heroic BSoD: After Kion uses the Roar out of anger and causes a ton of collateral damage, he does everything he can to avoid using it again.
  • Misplaced Wildlife: During the song "Stand Up, Stand Out", an elk is seen among Rafiki's cave paintings and is mentioned by Bunga, although the species does not occur in Africa.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Kion when he uses the Roar in anger, is stunned and primarily spends much of the episode in a state of shock.
  • Oh, Crap!: Makuu is stunned when Kion demonstrates a new mastery of the Roar, able to strike single targets instead of a whole group.
  • Ominous Clouds: When Kion prepares to use the Roar of the Elders in anger, it manifests as dark, rumbling storm clouds instead of the usual white ones.
  • Power Incontinence: Kion's anger at the hyenas for attacking Nala causes the Roar to deal large-scale damage to the surrounding environment, including a small earthquake that nearly kills Nala (as well as blows away Ono's crest feathers). Kion vows to never use the Roar again after the incident, fearing he'll end up like Scar.
  • Punctuated! For! Emphasis!: Kion exclaims, "Get! Away! From! My! Mom!" before unleashing the Roar of the Elders.
  • Shoot the Hostage Taker: The crocodiles take Nala hostage and surround her so Kion won't risk using the roar on them, but with a calm heart and focused determination, Kion is able to make the roar shoot around her to take them all out.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Kion manages to focus his anger and fire directed, small-scale versions of the Roar to take out the crocodiles surrounding Nala, showing his growing mastery of the power.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Mufasa reassures Kion that, while may have used the roar in anger, the fact that this anger came from his desire to protect his mother makes him far more noble than Scar, who didn't care about anyone else the way Kion does.
