Recap / The Librarians S 4 E 07 And The Disenchanted Forest

Go To

Hurting after Flynn's unexpected departure, Eve and the remaining Librarians follow the clipping book's advice and head to a team-building camp in the woods. They quickly discover that not everything at the camp is as it appears, as campers start disappearing one after another, with the camp organizer trying to cover up the disappearances.

Trope

  • The Assimilator: When Jacob is taken by the trees, the others find him partially-absorbed into the Grandfather Tree's trunk. Subverted, all the Tree wanted was an interpreter to talk to the humans. Jacob, with his linguistic knowledge, fits the bill. After that's done, the trees release everyone they have absorbed over the past centuries, including a Spanish conquistador.
  • But Now I Must Go: Jacob realizes that him being a Librarian is much more important than his own personal happiness. One of the reasons he takes his Love Interest to the Library is to show her why he can't be with her.
  • Camping Episode: Most of the episode is spent in a forest camp focused on team-building. Cassandra is excited, as she has never been to a camp. She immediately starts playing pranks on Ezekiel, but he eventually points out that she's the only one who finds them funny, as all her ideas are based on movies.
  • Chainsaw Good: The lead DOSA agent tries to cut down the Grandfather Tree with a glowing chainsaw, only for the trees to swat him away with their branches.
  • Conspiracy Theorist: Jacob's Love Interest reveals that she's really a reporter, fired after attempting to publish a story about the Library and DOSA. At the end of the episode, he takes her to the Library to show her that she's not crazy. Then he tells her that she can't tell anyone about this. It's also the reason he can't be with her, as his destiny lies with the Library.
  • Cosmic Keystone: Apparently, if the Grandfather Tree is ever destroyed, all the forests across the world will die with it. The Tree gives the Librarians a pinecone to replant it, in case it's ever destroyed. The Librarians agree to keep it safe in the Library.
  • Heartbroken Badass: Eve is deeply hurt by Flynn's leaving, especially without talking to her first. She mentions all the times he left and came back, and she took him back without question. This time, though, she's done.
  • Not Evil, Just Misunderstood: The forest wasn't trying to hurt anyone. It was just trying to find some to act as an interpreter for the forest's wishes. Fortunately, with Jacob's linguistic knowledge, he's able to act as a middleman. The DOSA agents agree to reinstate the forest's protected status, while the Librarians agree to put the Grandfather Tree's pinecone into the Library for safekeeping, in case the Tree ever needs to be replanted.
  • Only Sane Man: For awhile, Ezekiel is the only one focused on the disappearances at the camp. Eve throws herself into team-building and competition, Cassie lives out her dreams of camp pranks, while Jacob has fallen for a camp counselor. Ezekiel is himself surprised that he's being the mature one here.
  • Opposing Sports Team: During the competitive team events, the Librarians are consistently beaten by another team, whose leader keeps throwing daggers at Eve with his eyes. When she sneaks into their cabin at one point, they catch her and reveal themselves to be DOSA agents, annoyed at the Librarians interfering with their investigation.
  • Refusal of the Call: After Flynn's departure, Jacob and Cassie start wondering if they ought to give regular life another go. By the end of the episode, though, both have realized that they belong in the Library, even though this means missing out on regular life. On the other hand, Ezekiel has fully embraced his new life as a Librarian and acts as the most focused member of the team in the episode.
  • When Trees Attack: The trees start taking people from the camp, eventually taking Jacob. Subverted, all they wanted was an interpreter to talk to the human authorities. After they manage to do it with Jacob's help, they release everyone they have taken over the centuries.
