Recap / The Interns S 9 E 14

Go To

Kisegach plans to hire a babysitter for her future baby, stating to annoyed Bykov that she does not plan to take maternity leave. Soon afterwards, in the hospital, Gleb asks Bykov to assign him to work in paediatric department today. When pressed by Semyon why he even needs this (unlike Bykov, he doesn't fall for Gleb's version that he wants to learn more about babies before his younger brother gets born), Gleb reveals his real motive: he wants to hit on attractive nurse from that department, and this is his best chance. But when Gleb actually proceeds with the plan, it quickly becomes apparent that if he wants to become closer with her, he must get along with her young patient Konstantin as well (and Kostya, for whatever reason, is vehemently against them dating). Nurse actually agrees to go on a date with Gleb, on condition that he would do her work for her, by feeding Kostya, giving him required procedures and putting him to sleep. Meanwhile, Bykov confronts Kisegach about Gleb, stating that her plan just failed: he knows that she sent Gleb into paediatric department in attempt to manipulate Bykov into accepting babysitter as a better alternative — only to learn that it was Gleb's own idea. But Gleb, still planning to date the nurse, plays along with Kostya's antics and it seems that he actually comes along with children, to Bykov's surprise.

Polina's patient is a cosmetics distributor, who, as she claims, looks ten years younger her real age thanks to her cosmetics. Now, she provokes Polina into becoming a distributor herself... amongst the patients. She even states that her being a doctor would be good for business: people tend to trust doctors, right? And there's nothing to be afraid of; literally anyone can become cosmetics distributor if they want. Polina tries to promote her "goods" to Rita... only to immediately be busted by Bykov, who gets so surprised by her audacious attempt to promote it to him, that he forgets to even yell on her. They then gets interrupted by Kisegach... who, unlike Bykov, falls for this "all-natural cosmetic" immediately, and asks Polina to order even more online. She also allows Polina to continue her "business", on condition that she would be more subtle about it. Polina then tries to sell cosmetics to Kupitman, who becomes interested almost immediately... and then Polina accidentally insults him. She fails to sell anything to anyone else, either, due to complete lack of social skills. She tries to ask her patient for help, but when she sees how Polina acts with clients, she tells that Polina is hopeless.

Olga confronts Semyon about Gleb's idea to work in paediatric department, "to learn more about how to treat children", and angrily asks why he didn't suggest the same, despite being a future father instead of "merely" a brother, forcing him to reveal Gleb's real motivation in order to preserve face. Of course, she reveals everything to Bykov when he stats that sending both Gleb and Semyon in paediatric department would be too much. Bykov, in turn, reveals the truth to Kisegach, and suggests how they can teach Gleb a lesson. Kisegach and Bykov "congratulates" Gleb on his "noble" decision to work at paediatric department, and makes him an offer (which, as Bykov states, he can't refuse) to attend the courses for young parents which would really teach him something useful if he's as motivated as he claims. Gleb, realising who ratted him out, provokes Olga into sending Semyon on those courses, too.

This episode provides examples of:

  • All for Nothing: Kostya's nurse states that she would only date Gleb when Kostya would "allow" this, and tasks Gleb to babysit Konstantin for a whole day (which is not the easiest work to do), only for Kostya to refuse in the end (and with him, the nurse as well). When called out on not simply refusing right from the start instead of giving him a false hope and tasking him with this little monster, nurse simply states that she did this in order to get rid of Kostya, because she was just as tired of him as Gleb.
  • Bait-and-Switch: The nurse on whom Gleb tries to hit tells him that she's engaged; as it turns out, she's "engaged" with one of her patients (young boy called Konstantin), playing along with him.
  • Bratty Half-Pint: When Gleb gets forced to act as Constantine babysitter (in order to impress Kostya's nurse who stated that she may only date Gleb if Kostya would "allow" this), Konstantin does everything in his power to make Gleb (to whom he acted hostilely right from the start) mad, from dripping him with apple juice to getting his coat (and then his face) dirty with paint. He then decides that it would be funny to pee on Gleb's pants. And in the end Kostya still doesn't "allow" Gleb to date that nurse.
  • Jerkass Has a Point:
    • Kisegach admits that Kupitman has a point when he states that her allowing Polina to sell cosmetics yet prohibiting Kupitman to sell alcohol is just double standards, and promises to close Polina's "business" as well.
    • Gleb calling nurse out isn't completely in wrong (even if his motivation to help her was utterly selfish): she could have just told him that she's not interested in him, but instead gave him a false hope, just to motivate him to do her work.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Polina consistently fails to sell cosmetics (save for sole success with Kisegach) due to lacking social skills whatsoever, and saying exactly the wrong things to potential clients, bringing up the reasons why they needs cosmetics in insulting light. Like mentioning Kupitman's elderly-looking sin, despite already knowing how serious this issue is for him, or making "suggestions" to Rita by stating that without cosmetics, she would look like she was kicked in the face. When her patient agrees to act as her "client" so she may train, Polina insults her, accidentally increases her age even further (and [[Digging Yourself Deeper replies "who cares" when pointed out). The patient (who previously stated that literally anyone can sell cosmetics) says that Polina is hopeless.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Jerk: Downplayed with Gleb; while he had no malicious intentions when he asked Bykov to assign him to work in paediatric department, what he tells him about his motivation (to learn more about babies so he may be better big brother for Kisegach's yet-to-born son) is a lie; his real motivation was to get close to attractive young nurse he plans to hit on.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Semyon rats Gleb out to Olga in order to not being sent to work in paediatric department (Gleb previously volunteered, "to learn more about babies and how to care about them", and Olga was infuriated by Semyon not doing the same and ergo being "indifferent" to their future baby's well-being), revealing his real (selfish) motivation; Olga reveals this to Bykov, who, in turn, reveals to Kisegach, and in cooperation with her punishes Gleb by forcibly "inviting" him on the courses for young parents. Gleb, once realises that Lobanov betrayed him, reveals the part about courses to Olga, resulting in her forcing Semyon to attend them himself.
  • Older Than She Looks: Polina's patient is forty nine, but, as Polina states it, looks at "just forty, at worst". This is thanks to cosmetic she sells.
  • An Offer You Can't Refuse: When Kisegach "gifts" Gleb with certificate for courses for young parents, Bykov states that Gleb can't refuse them. Gleb tries to argue, but when Kisegach mentions that there wouldn't be any "attractive young nurses", Gleb instantly realises that his lies were revealed, and just calmly accepts defeat.
  • Out of Focus: Phil is not presented in this episode. Semyon is, but has only secondary role in Gleb's plot.
  • Precocious Crush: The nurse on whom Gleb plans to hit states to be "engaged" with someone called Konstantin; as it turns out, Konstantin is only five, and this is all part of the game. Konstantin insists that once he would be discharged and grow older, he would find her and marry.
  • Refuge in Audacity: When busted by Bykov on attempt to sell cosmetics, Polina, instead of admitting her fault and apologising... proceeds to promote her "goods" to Bykov. She fails to sell anything, but it surprises him enough to prevent from killing her on sight.
  • That Came Out Wrong: Kupitman tell Polina that her suggestion to buy cosmetics sounds as either insult or mistake, and offers her chance to either apologise or provide context. She does the latter, and actually earns his attention... until she accidentally insults him for real, after which he promptly kicks her out of his office.
  • What the Hell, Hero?:
    • Bykov is vehemently against hiring a babysitter, stating that no one would do it better than the baby's own mother. Kisegach (whose idea it was to begin with) completely ignores him.
    • When Gleb volunteers to work in paediatric department to "learn more how to care about babies", Olga calls Semyon out on not doing the same, despite having much stronger motivation to do so. In order to save himself from Olga's wrath, Semyon reveals Gleb's real motivation (Gleb wanted to hit on attractive young nurse), but Olga suggests to try this for real anyway.
    • Gleb calls the nurse out on not simply refusing his advances right away instead of giving him a false hope and forcing him to deal with Kostya.
  • Younger Than They Look: After failing to sell cosmetics to Rita (and succeeding with Kisegach by accident), Polina tries to sell it to Kupitman. Kupitman, being as always interested in maintaining his fading beauty, becomes interested almost immediately; but then Polina botches it due to not thinking before saying.
