Recap / The Interns S 8 E 2

Go To

Bykov is now awake, and needs one of interns to act as his snitch, so he would be informed about their screwups even while he is still bed-ridden. Phil volunteers... because he plans to deceive him, by telling him that everything is "okay". But very first time he tries to lie to Bykov, Bykov places a video camera on Phil's head, meaning that he would act as Bykov's eyes. This works at first, but then interns realises that camera can't transfer audio; now Phil warns everyone before entering, allowing everyone to cover for any illegal activities beforehand. But Phil's attempt to pretend that everything goes fine is way too blatant, and Bykov "upgrades" him with a walkie-talkie, giving Bykov the way to interact with the world outside of his ward. Interns quickly grows tired of this, and cooperates to destroy Bykov's spying equipment, as well as to show that forcing people to snitch on each other may end badly for them, by pretending that Phil was injured in process... but Bykov never comes (unknowingly to them, he was distracted by Kisegach). Phil, enraged by Bykov's indifference, calls him and tells to just lie in bed and wait until he becomes better, instead of forcing the other people to snitch for him — which Bykov counters by reminding that Phil actually volunteered.

Bykov thinks that Kisegach had lied about pregnancy to snap him out of his coma, and tells about her "clever idea" to everyone else in the hospital. Unknowingly to him, she is indeed pregnant, and if Bykov finds out, this may shock him right back into coma. And the longer they wait, the greater is the chance that Bykov would realise that it was not a lie all by himself. To reinforce his initial delusion, Kupitman and Kisegach creates an awkward "cover story" about how she came with idea about "pregnancy". The plan fails completely: firstly, the cover story Kupitman had prepared is too ridiculous to believe, making it painfully obvious that they're trying to hide something, and secondly... Bykov had found Kisegach's pregnancy test.

Varya plans to impress David with home-made food. Lyuba tastes it, and tells her that it is inedible — just in time for David to enter and ask for it. Varya choses the worst way possible to protect David from tasting it — just insists that it's hers and she wouldn't share — which makes her look like a greedy jerk. In attempt to apologise, she only makes the situation worse by telling that the food belongs to Lyuba. Since Lyuba is well-known for her cooking skills, Varya tries to "delicately" ask David for a possible reason why Lyuba's skills, both professional and culinary, suddenly degraded so much. Lyuba can't tolerate these lies for long, and tells David the truth. He tastes Varya's food and pretends to like it... only to throw up as soon as she leaves. When Varya suddenly returns and busts him, David tells her that they're not supposed to lie to each other, and invites her to restaurant instead.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Bad Liar: Phil volunteers to snitch for Bykov, but actually tries to lie to him about everything going fine. He does so bad job at that that Bykov instantly realises what's going on.
  • Bait-and-Switch: Gleb and Semyon decides to take the radical measures to deal with Bykov spying on them. We can hear the sounds of something being heavily beaten, and Phil screaming for mercy... and then the camera reveals that they took the spy gear off Phil, and smashed it beyond repair. Phil is actually a part of the plan, and the end goal is to provoke Bykov. Bykov never comes to them, because he gets distracted by Kisegach and her pregnancy, which interns takes as the sign that he doesn't give a crap about Phil.
  • Blatant Lies: A "story" about how Kisegach and Kupitman came with the idea about fake pregnancy is so obviously fake (and created on the spot) that no one could possible believe in it. In fact, it later confirms Bykov's suspicions all by itself.
  • "Could Have Avoided This!" Plot: When Phil calls Bykov out on "forcing" him into snitching on his friends, Bykov reminds him that Phil volunteered for this, and tells him that he could have simply refused right from the beginning, without consequences.
  • Fake Pregnancy: Inverted. Everyone thinks that Kisegach's pregnancy is fake (as part of the plan to save Bykov)... and only Kisegach herself (and Kupitman, who guessed by himself, but agreed to keep it hidden) knows that it is not. In order to not revert Bykov's condition back into square one, they now must reinforce his belief that the pregnancy is fake, for a time being. Unfortunately, their "cover story" is so ridiculous, it only confirmed Bykov's suspicions that they really have something to hide... like a real pregnancy. And as a final nail in the coffin, Bykov found Kisegach's pregnancy test in her office; both of those he tells to Kisegach when they finally discusses it properly.
  • "Fawlty Towers" Plot: Varya, instead of just admitting to David that she can't cook to save her life, tries to "protect" him from her (terrible) homemade food by insisting that it "belongs to [her]", making herself look like a greedy jerk in process. She tries to defuse the situation... by telling him that this was Lyuba's food (by itself rather questionable plan, since everyone knows how good her homemade food is, including David himself). Varya clumsily tries to create an excuse why Lyuba suddenly became so bad at cooking, but Lyuba refuses to cooperate and just tells David the truth.
  • Gilligan Cut: Inverted. Bykov is surprisingly calm when he tells Kisegach that he's aware about her pregnancy being real, and to her question how he managed to take it so well, he answers "I'm a gentleman, after all". Cut to Bykov (who just found Kisegach's pregnancy test) calling Lyuba: he needs a medicine for his heart. After this, he ate six sedative pills, and now plans to eat seventh. Kisegach has only one reply to this: that she needs a pill or two for herself.
  • I'm Standing Right Here: When Kisegach and Kupitman discusses Bykov possibly still being in coma (due to his lack of response to anything), he makes it clear that he is very much awake and can hear anything, and tells them to calm down: he would be fine.
  • Lethal Chef: Varya's homemade food is painfully bad. Lyuba (who tastes it first) suggests her to not try this herself, and just throw it away. Of course, Varya, as always, refuses to simply tell the truth, and tries to deceive David that it was cooked by Lyuba... a big mistake, considering her reputation as the best cook in the hospital. When Varya tries to find an excuse how Lyuba suddenly cooked something so bad, Lyuba just grows tired of her and tells David everything as is. Later, David actually tastes Varya's homemade food, and compliments her... but quickly throws up when Varya leaves... only for her to suddenly return and bust him.
  • Lying to Protect Your Feelings: To protect Varya's feelings, David lies that he actually likes her food. As soon as she leaves, he throws up. She busts him, and David just tells her that they shouldn't lie to each other.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Gleb and Semyon panics when they realises that Bykov can use the camera he attached to Phil's head to see them playing video games instead of doing work.
    • Gleb immediately wipes that smug smile from his face once he realises that Bykov now can hear his insults (and even reply to them), thanks to "upgrading" Phil with a walkie-talkie. Other characters have a similar reactions, but not as strong.
  • Revealing Cover-Up:
    • How Bykov confirms that Phil tries to deceive him again? Because everyone, when gets on camera, are way too eager to play enthusiastic, competent workers, making it obvious that they were warned beforehand about Bykov spying on them, and now doing it in order to impress him. After this, he "upgrades" Phil with a walkie-talkie, so now he can hear everything — and respond.
    • Kisegach and Kupitman's "cover story" to hide the fact that Kisegach's pregnancy isn't fake is so ridiculous, it by itself confirms Bykov's suspicions that Anastasia may be pregnant for real.
  • Secret-Keeper: Kupitman agrees to keep Kisegach's pregnancy hidden until she decides what to do with it.
  • The Stool Pigeon: Bykov is still bed-ridden, and so needs a snitch to inform him about the other interns' screwups. Unsurprisingly, it's Phil who volunteers, to which the other interns reacted negatively. Except, he does it in order to fool Bykov that everything is okay, "even if not everything is okay" (and since Phil volunteered, Bykov would not suspect anything). This plan actually impresses both Gleb and Semyon. Unfortunately, Phil botches everything, and Bykov installs some equipment on him, so he may actually spy on people.
