Go To

Kupitman plans to hit on Rita and asks Bykov for advice. When Bykov laughs on him, he suggests to bet on it, to which Bykov agrees. But thanks to Bykov cheating by hiring the patient to intimidate Kupitman by pretending to be Rita's jealous boyfriend, Kupitman loses the bet. He, however, refuses to pay money he'd lost, stating that the bet was just a mistake and thus doesn't matter. In order to make Kupitman go all the way with the bet and lose, Bykov recruits Rita to play along with his prank: she would pretend to reciprocate to Kupitman's early advances, so Kupitman would insist on restarting the bet. This works, but Kupitman somehow "wins"... or, rather, he and Rita cooperates to cheat and split the money. But then Rita takes all the money, stating that otherwise she would tell Bykov how pathetic Kupitman was when begging her to cooperate with him; she was aware of their bet all along, and wasn't amused by it.

Gleb receives an anonymous letter which promises him something "interesting" if he would stay on a night shift today. But who wrote it? As it turns out, it was Olga, who cooperated with Semyon to fool Gleb into staying on a night shift instead of Lobanov, allowing Olga and Semyon to attend theatre this evening. Lobanov tells Bykov about the prank, and Bykov offers to repeat it, this time just for fun. Semyon refuses and tries to warn Gleb at the last moment, but Gleb disregards him, because he has the "concrete evidence" — panties. Unknowingly to him, those belongs to Kisegach; Bykov tells so to Lobanov, but prevents him from revealing it by threatening to reveal that the first prank was done by him. However, after another fake "date", Gleb snaps and just attaches the panties to a notice board with humiliating note, after which Semyon tells him anyway. Gleb rushes to confront Bykov, who reveals that he actually bought those in a nearby stall, and tells him about Lobanov being behind the first prank. Knowing what's gonna happen, Semyon just runs away before Gleb can say anything.

Phil's patient, Sasha, turns out to be gay, who, once he learns that Phil was raised in a homosexual couple and is perfectly okay with it, asks him to help to convince his boyfriend Valeriy that they would do the right thing by adopting a child (Valeriy fears that this would only cause harm in the long run). Phil assures him that everything would be okay, but at night realises that it would be a horrible mistake, given where they live. Phil asks Rita to pretend that he simply doesn't exist, so Valeriy would get angry due to being called for nothing, and leave. This works, but Sasha manages to catch Phil and force into facing Valeriy tomorrow — which is when Phil plans to take a day off...

This episode provides examples of:

  • All for Nothing: Neither Bykov nor Kupitman wins the bet; Rita does, by cooperating with Kupitman and then blackmailing him into giving up the money.
  • Bait-and-Switch: Bykov seemingly refuses to bet on Kupitman sleeping with Rita, out of disgust... and then agrees if the bet is high enough.
Kupitman: Wanna bet that I would sleep with Rita?
Bykov: Only a jerk would bet on a woman! (beat) So only if you bet at least 5K roubles.
  • Batman Gambit: Bykov intentionally lies to Lobanov about the panties belonging to Kisegach, knowing that he would rush to inform Gleb, giving Bykov an excuse to reveal Semyon's involvement in the first prank. In fact, he comments on Lobanov taking longer than was estimated.
  • The Bet: Kupitman has a bet with Bykov about whether Kupitman would sleep with Rita or not. Their entire plot involves both sides trying to cheat in order to get the money.
  • Blackmail:
    • How Bykov forces Semyon to not reveal the truth about Bykov's prank to Gleb — by pointing out that he just repeats Semyon's own prank, and Gleb would considering him to be a traitor anyway when he would find out — and, more importantly, Bykov himself would. Lobanov still ultimately snaps when Bykov's prank goes too far — and Bykov immediately does exactly what he threatened to do.
    • Rita helps Kupitman to win the bet by cheating, then forces him to give her all the money they had won from Bykov, otherwise she would tell Bykov how pathetically Kupitman acted before she agreed to cooperate with him.
  • Crazy Jealous Guy: Bykov hires a threatening enough patient to play Rita's very jealous and very aggressive boyfriend, in order to scare Kupitman into backing out and losing the bet (scoring with Rita).
  • Didn't Think This Through: Neither Phil nor his patient Sasha did think about possible consequences of a gay couple adopting a kid in rampantly homophobic Russia. Phil (who suffered from constant homophobia-induced abuse throughout all his childhood, despite living in the USA) realises this in time to talk the couple out of it by mentioning the possible complications. What he also forgot to mention is that homosexuals and/or transgenders have a low chance to even adopt a kid in the first place, and high chance to lose them to child services when (not even "if") someone finds out and complains.
  • Dirty Old Man: The reason why Bykov refuses to help Kupitman to hit on Rita: Kupitman is old, relatively ugly creep, and Bykov considers him to be the lost case.
  • The Dog Bites Back: When both his "dates" turns out to be fake, Gleb attaches the girl's panties he'd found earlier on the notice board with a humiliating note. Unfortunately, his vengeance is misplaced, since both "dates" were pranks (first one organised by Lobanov, second by Bykov), and panties actually belongs to... Kisegach (Bykov stole them in order to use as a bait). After this, Lobanov snaps and tells him the truth.
  • Dude, Not Funny!: When Bykov reveals that the panties Gleb just found actually belongs to Kisegach, Lobanov considers this to be a new low, even for Bykov. After that, he tries (in vain) to ask Gleb to at least hide them somewhere and stop discussing his erotic fantasies with him. When second "date", of course, gets proven fake as well, Gleb becomes infuriated and attaches the panties to the notice board, after which Semyon snaps and reveals the truth to him. Gleb's reaction is even more explosive than Semyon's was, and he actually yells at Bykov.
  • Everyone Has Standards:
    • Bykov pretends to be disgusted by betting on Kupitman sleeping with Rita... then agrees if the bet is high enough.
    • Invoked by Kupitman, when he fails his bet with Bykov and tries to cancel it in order to not pay the money he just lost. The plan fails, because Bykov points out that Kupitman and "moral" are incompatible, and he's obviously lying:
Kupitman: You were right, only a jerk would bet on a woman. (...) You insulted me, I exploded and said this ill-thought thing. Andrey, Rita is a good woman and doesn't deserve to be treated like this! And I'm not amoral enough.
Bykov: Remember when we poisoned everyone with laxatives before a meeting, and betted on it? Those were good people, too.
Kupitman: I became more mature since then.
Bykov: This happened only half a year ago!
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Rita manages to play this on both Bykov and Kupitman, to punish them for their bet (whether Kupitman would sleep with Rita or not). Bykov "loses" the bet due to Rita "sleeping with Kupitman" (actually they united to just scam Bykov for money and then divide them 50/50); then Kupitman "wins" the bet, but Rita blackmails him into giving her his half of the money, since otherwise she would tell to Bykov how she humiliated him before agreeing on this alliance.
  • Love Letter Lunacy: Gleb receives an anonymous love letter signed with a lipstick mark and invitation to stay on a night shift tonight, in order to receive something "interesting". Gleb is very enthusiastic and tries to find out who sent it; he also suggests to free Lobanov from a night shift he received, so Gleb may stay in his place. In reality, it was sent by Olga, in order to free Semyon, so they can attend theatre, at Gleb's expense; Semyon was on the plan.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Phil initially supports his (gay) patient's idea to adopt a kid, but at night he realises that while this likely would be a good idea in USA, it would not be in Russia, for one simple reason: rampant homophobia on all levels.
  • Nightmare Sequence: Phil has a nightmare soon after he convinces his (gay) patient to adopt a kid, stating that everything would be okay. In this nightmare, Phil, now much older doctor, gets confronted by some guy (who looks and sounds suspiciously like Phil himself), who tells him about all the problems he suffered thanks to this adoption (all of this happened to Phil himself, too). He then calls him out on failing to take into account that he suggested to adopt a kid in Russia, not in USA, then proceeds to shoot him to death.
  • Out of Focus: Varya doesn't appear in this episode.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Phil avoids discussion with a gay couple about adopting children (due to radically changing opinion on their problem literally overnight) by asking Rita to tell Valeriy that Phil simply doesn't exist. This almost works, but then Sasha (Valeriy's boyfriend) confronts him and forces to return tomorrow, so he can explain this personally... only for Phil to decide to take a day off instead.
  • Troll: Bykov actually likes Semyon's and Olga's prank on Gleb (they provoked him into staying on a night shift with a fake love letter) so much, he asks Lobanov to try this again. Lobanov refuses and tries to talk Gleb out of staying on a night shift, stating that it may be a trap (without revealing his involvement in the first prank), but Gleb doesn't believe him, seeing a better explanation why he didn't meet anyone; he also has an "evidence" — the girl's panties. Predictably, it turns out that the panties were a bait set by Bykov, and panties actually belonged to... Gleb's mother (this last one squicks Semyon to no end). When Semyon finally snaps and reveals the truth to Gleb (who proceeds to call Bykov out)... Bykov reveals that he lied to Lobanov about the panties, expecting him to inform Gleb much earlier. He then informs Gleb that the first prank was Semyon's own work, and leaves them alone.
