Recap / The Interns S 7 E 5

Go To

Somebody ruined Bykov's bike. But who? He suspects that it's one of his interns, and wants Kisegach's help with narrowing down suspects.

Naturally, the first suspect is Gleb, because Bykov has ruined his phone for playing on work instead of doing as Bykov asks... but he has a solid alibi: he was in Zvenigorod with his grandmother. Semyon and Phil both have some reasons to hate him, but even when Bykov mentions that it was because he interfered in their "love triangle" with Olga, it's still unclear who of them specifically, if any, did this, because the longer he talks about it, the weirder his arguments becomes. Varya initially sounds as an odd one out (even Bykov agrees with it), until he mentions what he really did, which Kisegach considers to be so serious, she now thinks that Varya is the first suspect.

Suddenly, Bykov accuses Kisegach of destroying his bike, due to being jealous... towards "Isolde". Kupitman intervenes and suggests to just check security footage... which reveals that it was actually him who attacked the bike, while being totally drunk.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Alcohol-Induced Idiocy: The real culprit of ruining Bykov's bike "Isolde" is... Kupitman, who did this while being extremely drunk and angry.
  • Bookend: Episode starts with Bykov finding "Isolde" being ruined. Episode ends with the rest of security footage Bykov used to find who really ruined his bike, starting with Kupitman, then proceeding to interns who one by one finds this out and gloats (Lobanov even kicks "Isolde" several times out of spite), and culminates in Bykov arriving.
  • A Boy and His X: Bykov is very attached to his bike "Isolde" — to the point that he tries to strangle Kupitman to death when he learns that it was him who ruined "Isolde".
  • Cargo Envy:
    • Bykov included Kisegach in the list of suspects, because, apparently, she is jealous towards his "Isolde".
    • This was actually Kupitman's motivation to attack "Isolde", as it "steals" Bykov from him. This, and alcohol.
  • Enmity with an Object: The whole plot starts due to Bykov finding his bike broken. In the end, it gets revealed that it was Kupitman who broke it, drunk and angry at Bykov due to being envious towards "Isolde", putting his frustration out on said "Isolde".
  • I'm Standing Right Here: Phil has heard how Bykov told Semyon that Olga would get bored of Phil and return to Lobanov, so he has nothing to worry about; Kisegach actually agrees that it may be the reason why Phil could've been the one who destroyed Bykov's bike, but apparently the reason is more complex (if there even is one, given how insane Bykov's reasoning is).
  • Insane Troll Logic: Bykov's "logic" when he discusses which one of interns — Semyon or Phil — has more motivation for revenge, is extremely hard to follow, and everything Kisegach says either against or in favour of one of them being a real culprit gets immediately rejected because it is not the full story, and it gets followed up by something which entirely changes context. When it goes too far, Anastasia gives up and suggests to just proceed to the next suspect.
  • Kick the Dog: There are two reasons why Bykov put Semyon into the list of suspects. One is about stealing Lobanov's food and threatening to leave him on a night shift if he wouldn't back off; another is more serious — Bykov mocked him about Olga. But then it turns out that the real reason is more complicated... so much more, it's impossible to follow his logic at all.
  • Murder the Hypotenuse: Drunk Kupitman's response to Bykov (supposedly) liking "Isolde" more than him, his best friend? To break everything in Bykov's bike he could, out of anger. When he calms down after attempt to kill Kupitman here and now when he finds out, Bykov (in response to direct question whom he loves more, Kisegach or Kupitman) tells Kupitman that he likes Kupitman, "Isolde" and Kisegach, in that order — just in case Kupitman would attempt to stab Anastasia, too.
  • Never My Fault: Bykov scolds Kupitman for being psychotic, yet Kupitman attacked just bike, and even then, while being wasted, while Bykov, completely sober, nearly strangled Kupitman just a couple of minutes ago.
  • Serious Business: Bykov cut some Varya's hair because it interfered with her work, driving her to tears. Bykov actually considers her to be the least probably out of all suspects, and only brought her along to check all versions, but Kisegach considers her to now be the first suspect: while Bykov sees nothing in it, for women, ruining their hairs is a very serious offence.
  • The Slacker: The reason why Bykov put Gleb in the list of suspects is because, when Gleb was busy playing his phone instead of doing his work (right in front of Bykov), Bykov reacted by breaking his phone. However, turns out that he has a solid alibi: he was in Zvenigorod with his grandmother, who can confirm it.
  • Stealth Insult: Bykov "comforts" Lobanov by saying that he should just let Olga date Phil, as she would get bored with him and returns to Semyon... cause with Semyon, her life would never be boring; it's not so much complimenting Lobanov, as pointing out that he can't stop screwing up and create the problems out of nowhere.
  • Who Murdered the Asshole: Someone just destroyed Bykov's favourite bike. Even if ignore everyone else who has the reasons to be angry at Bykov (i.e. almost everyone else), and cut the list of suspects to just interns, there're four of them, and he still can't choose one; Kisegach tries to help him with that. Later, Bykov even tries to accuse Kisegach herself. The real culprit, however, is the one whom Bykov never suspected at all.
  • Yandere: When asked whom he loves more, Kupitman or his bike, Bykov replies that he loves Kupitman, "Isolde" and Kisegach, in that order — and adds that he said it in case Kupitman would try to stab Anastasia out of jealousy, too, pointing what he did to "Isolde" while drunk.
